Didn’t Hillenburg also push for the animation to be more expressive during the period he returned to the show? During the OG seasons the crew was largely comprised of people who’ve worked on wacky shows like Rockos Modern Life, and Hillenburg was a Ren & Stimpy fan. Like you gotta keep in mind that it’s far easier to storyboard now than it was then, I’m pretty sure if the OG seasons were made today they’d be just as exaggerated as the newer seasons, heck, the first movies animation was just as exaggerated as the modern seasons likely due to the higher budget it had. It’s more valid to criticize the writing for being shit, seasons 10-11 were the best post-movie SpongeBob has ever been and felt like a breath of fresh air compared to the Tibbitt seasons, but you can just tell from seasons 12-onward that the show just became style-over-substance.
