Chuck Dixon is The Legend. He is one of the most prolific comic book writers having done lengthy runs on Batman, Punisher, Robin, Nightwing, G.I. Joe as well as working on storied IPs such as The Simpsons, The Hobbit, and Wheel of Time. He’s also one of the creators of Batman villain Bane.On top of his comic work, Dixon has also penned a number of novels including his Levon Cade series, which was recently adapted into a live-action film by David Ayer in A Working Man.He spoke with Fandom Pulse about the decline of mainstream comics, James Gunn’s DCU, his Rippaverse work, and more.Fandom Pulse (FP): What are your thoughts on Absolute Batman artist Daniel Warren Johnson depicting Batman seemingly killing an ICE agent?Chuck Dixon: It’s appalling. It cynically uses an iconic superhero in support of a radical political view. It’s an artist who is hot, at the moment, using up his good will to push his ideology and make some quick cash. It is a violation of everything Batman stands for. Batman stands for the rule of law and he does not kill. It’s wrong from start to finish. And for those of you who would argue, “But this is Absolute Batman!” It’s Batman. You don’t mess with a legacy character like this. Working on maybe the most famous fictional character ever created comes with some responsibility.FP: What happened to the comic book industry where attacking law and order as well as truth and justice is commonplace?Chuck: It all started in the 2000s when the professional comics editors left the business and a crowd of indifferent tourists took over. They cared about the playlist on their phone more than the quality of the comics they were supposed to be overseeing. This created a vacuum and the the Left rushes in to fill any void left open to them. The way Satan exploits a human flaw or mosquitos find the tiniest rip in the tent fabric.

FP: DC Animated just announced they are doing an animated adaptation of Knightfall? Are you involved in this project at all? What are your expectations for it?Chuck: I’m as involved as you are.The animation people keep the original creators at arm’s length.Frankly, I expect it to be meh. The chump change check they’ll send us should pay for some groceries.FP: What are your thoughts on James Gunn’s DC Universe vision now that he’s released Superman, Peacemaker Season 2, and Creature Commandos?Chuck: I think it’s over for him. Superman failed no matter how you look at it. If it was a Hawkman or a Martian Manhunter movie he might have escaped the hammer that’s about to drop on him.But he failed to even break even on a Superman movie. When you have all the good wishes that come with the world’s most famous superhero on your side and fail to make a profit it’s bad. Real bad.The lack of renewal for Peacemaker is a sign. He will not be a part of the DCU (if there even is a DCU) after the upcoming sale of Warners.FP: Rippaverse announced Horseman #2 about two months ago, can you tell us a little about it?Chuck: Well, Hector’s continuing origin goes on. I left him in a bad place at the end of #1 and it’s only going to get worse. The Horseman is a continuously deconstructing plotline where you can never be sure what’s going to happen next. And this current storyline ties into the events of the next Alphacore arc. But they can each be read as standalones.FP: What other plans do you have in the works at Rippaverse?Chuck: More Hector. And a new Zalen GN next year.Rippasend will also be releasing the long-awaited 7 Deadly Sinners by me and Bob C. Hardin in the coming months.

>>151018063>The reality is that if Marvel and DC went away most people still wouldn't read some of these indies. A bunch of modern creators want the comic shop model to burst because they'd rather sell to the book market. The comic book shops are dinosaurs to them full of old white men. The book market has completely different measures of success. Selling thousands of books to be a success, books being able to sit on shelves longer and less creative pressures or turn arounds. In the 2010s a bunch of Marvel books were massively pushed in the YA book market and gave this false positive they they could be successful. Ms Marvel first TPB sold very well but with a very high drop off post the first TPB. Her books routinely went below usual cancellation levels and she's become a tool of MCU synergy as well as killing her off and now pushing her heavily with the X-Men.They simply want comic book shops to die because they think their work will do well in the book market. But like you say, a big portion of Marvel and DC fans will never pick up their books anyway. >>151021399Morrison recently said he isn't going to do a long run on a comic anymore; he's gotten older. Ennis probably could but there's very little for him to do at Marvel and DC for a long period of time. On top of that, Marvel in particular has gotten too tight with finances that a long run isn't really guaranteed unless they keep relaunching.
>>151024459No.We don't talk about HIM in this household.
>>151020742Frank also never wins his war and all he does is kill people. It doesn’t solve anything. New criminals just fill the void
>>151021399>You don't really see Garth Ennis or even Grant Morrison writing long running series for the big two anymore.Because they don’t want to, dumbass. They’re writing their own shit.
>>151025600Even The Slavers, the arc where Ennis said he was rooting for Frank the most reveals that even though he did a good thing by bumping off the traffickers, they're only part of the chain of command and that Viorica goes on but is still severely traumatized and "all she can do is live what life they left her"
>>151025613I'm sure they would if the Big Two actually offered good deals and more windows for creator owned properties. Vertigo is coming back but people realized long ago the independents are the better route to take. Big Two shafts the veteran writers routinely is what I was saying
>>151025643Grant and Garth both occasionally do stuff for DC and Marvel. They are simply not interested in doing long runs for them anymore when they can make their own stuff instead. Why would they relinquish their creator owned rights to WB/Disney to control when they don’t need the money?
>>151020786He would get PTSD and try to push it into a comic
>>151025017Of course there would probably be WAY less superhero comics to buy, to begin with, with barely any of the big characters.
>>151025600>it doesn’t solve anything. New criminals just fill the voidThere would be way more with the ones he franked.
>>151025613Ennis did that black label mini-series for Batman a couple of years back, Reptilian. I think it was meant to be a parody. I guess it had its moments
>>151025202Morrison did the definitive "long run" on Batman, he is probably the most influential writer of our times when it comes to that character if you also count his Arkham Asylum novel and how he fleshed out the character during his JLA run.Point is, I would not bother with anything else either
>>151027332>[Morrison] is probably the most influential writer of our times when it comes to [Batman]It's been Miller since the 1980s.
>>151027357They moved away from Miller during the 00s, the character is no longer the loner outsider guy who fights against authority and the complacency of his own people but rather an OP superhero dude like the rest of them, albeit in a cooler costume. Not much about current day Batman reminds me of Miller's character
>>151007813What is important about him?
>>151027357Miller in the 80s was the best, but subsequent writers didn't really stay on that route.
>>151027357>>151029701Miller defined post-crisis Batman with DKR and Year One. Yeah Morrison moved away from it, but then Snyder moved back with his New 52 run. King was a mix of both. Tynion, Zdarsky, and now Fraction, yeah they're post-Miller.
>>151007813Literally who
>>151008235Who gives a shit? You're right- Superman is an American mythological icon. Why does he need the validation of the rest of the world, which he is not for?>>151022035>erm its only to retards who i complain about on twitter for saying empathy is le weaknessGo back then. It's polarizing on this site, dipshit. That's what we're talking about.
>>151009483>It new 52 Superman, begging of Superman's career, and All Star Superman, end of Superman's career. Both are from Grant Morrison and yet All Star is well regarded while in New 52 most people think is poor. That explains the polarized audience.I agree that Gunn's Superman is a bad version of the character, but objectively the audience received it well and they have no mandate to change his character in any way. It seems even Gunn is more interested in Lex than him so expect less development going forward.I disagree that Gunn's Superman is a 'fusion' between Morrison's two Supermans though. Gunnman is more naive than even teenage New 52 Clark was, and is much more down to earth in his kindness than even the fanon version of All Star Supes. He is especially dissimilar to the Silver Age Superman, and anyone who says he acts like that version has never read Silver Age Superman. Gunn's Superman is Byrne. When Snyderfags say 'Snyder is the blueprint!' pointing out the iconographic similarities between Snyder and Gunn's Superman they actually mean it's Byrne. Both took their Krypton from Byrne (MoS had the weird artificial breeding and the Els as rebellious aristocrats, S25 took from the musing that Kal would conquer Earth that that's what they wanted) and their Lex (BvS just updated him to Zuck instead of Trump, S25's Luthor is all post crisis). Hell, Snyder's Els are more like Morrison's from ASS by far, while S25 can be seen as just an adaptation of Byrne's MoS #6.All the discussion about the actual influences and developments of these characters is vibe-based, done by retards who have neither read anything nor had any decent higher level humanities education. Fuck.
Every threadWhy are they like this?
>>151023567Scholastic sells because of being able to market their product directly in schools via book fairs under the guise of "promoting literacy" and shit. When you have direct access to the little bastards, it's easy to get them to buy your product.
>>151027332The most definitive Batman writer since the '80s is actually Waid simply because Tower of Babel is basically what birthed the "Batgod with time to plan" shit.
>>151031991That was downstream of Planman beating Superman with his plan in the final issue of DKR.

>>151031139>Why does he need the validation of the rest of the world, which he is not for?Because huge, worldwide-released movies need to make money off the whole planet, you donkey.

My GOYSLOP is WOKE??? COULD IT BE? No, no, no, no, no.... NO! DAMMIT!!!!MainstreamSISTERS.......... is it over at last.......?
>>151032490Ultimately they enjoy being victims and seeing the world against them because it allows them to rationalize things not going their way, even when they're supposedly winning.
>>151032490Batman is personal friends with the police commissioner and he supports the system, even when that system keeps letting the worst people he's ever captured go free. He just goes and captures them again. Yes, he's for the rule of law.
>>151032490Most stories only posit that corrupt people in the power structure are wrong, but never that the structure itself needs uprooting/reform. Police is always just ,there can only occassionally be bad cops. Same way the superhero is just, but some of them may turn evil. There's one batman story that doesn't do that and everyone loved it. The Dark Knight Returns.Really goated, and i love ow it juxtaposes Superman as a well-meaning, but ultimately complacent cog in the system.
