You had maybe six channels max unless you lived in a major area. Four of them were local, and two were opposing big news. The four local ones would play local news, dogshit sitcoms that were just "we are a functional family", and the other two were usually just a grab bag of random cartoons and other trash they found for free/hyper cheap. Pretty sure half the stations would just pirate shit.
