I didn't like it very much. Pretty disappointed.
I really liked Simonson's art on Manhunter in the 70s, but aside from a few pages of what I read of his Thor run, he wasn't at the same level as before.

Admitting you have a problem is the first step to fixing it.
>>
>>151019082
The cover for 337 and the first three pages are glorious, then it falls apart. Simonson's art becomes sloppier as it goes. You still a handful of nice pages, but too infrequently.

Who else?

Ok?

Yeah, I tried reading it several years back but I got bored pretty fast.

Stop acting like a child.
>>
>>151018820
I didn't much like it either. I'm not a fan of the art style. Thor spends like half the run mind controlled and the second half is really downbeat with some of the weakest Sal Buscema art ever.
>>
>>151019056
The problem is that norse myths are a far better read than these disneyified versions from the comics. It's the same with Wonder Woman, the greeks were amazing at stories and what Wonder Woman borrows is so disneyified and lame in comparison.

Start acting like an adult.

I am. You, however, are not. You're throwing a tantrum because I didn't like a comic book. Do you honestly believe that's mature of you?

It's a damn shame that so many acclaimed comics don't hold up, both old and new.
>>
Gay and negative thread. Simonson's Thor is kino
>>
>>151024329
I think a little desperation goes a long way.
>>151024351
What's kino about it? Please elaborate. I like it when people are passionate about comics. I just didn't enjoy this one.
>>
>>151024441
It's grandiose. Doesn't take itself too seriously without sacrificing the dramatic flair you expect from a superhero comic about a norse god. Good lineup of villains that test Thor and great side characters like Baldur. The Beta Ray Bill story it opens with will always be gold to me and if you are op I think the book's art is a little more consistent then you gave it credit for. I will say i straight up don't like Malekith and that early story with him blows
>>
>>151018820
>I didn't like it very much. Pretty disappointed.

>>151024635
>It's grandiose.
Sometimes it is. Other times, it falls short.
>Doesn't take itself too seriously without sacrificing the dramatic flair you expect from a superhero comic about a norse god.
I suppose, but that's good enough for me. It should aim to be serious and dramatic and unexpected, all at the same time.
>Good lineup of villains that test Thor and great side characters like Baldur.
I didn't register Thor as much of a character, since he's always caught in the machinations of other gods and villains.
>The Beta Ray Bill story it opens with will always be gold to me
I feel it could have been told better, but it's a cool plot point.
>and if you are op I think the book's art is a little more consistent then you gave it credit for.
It's not as meticulous as his work on Manhunter, which I think was a much lower page count and he only had art duties.
Even from the cover of Thor 337 and the first several epic pages, the art quality falls off a cliff until the last couple of pages.

Yeah, Manhunter was a way better comic book.
>>
>>151026066
>I suppose, but that's good enough for me. It should aim to be serious and dramatic and unexpected, all at the same time
This is a shill criticism. Not every piece of fiction needs to reinvent the wheel to be great and that opening story is one of the most unexpected moments in comics.
>I didn't register Thor as much of a character
That's not on the comic because he's well written in this run. Different strokes but it sounds like you just don't get the mythic type characters or stories
>>
>>151024635
This feels like a shill post, doesn't say much but just offers broad an unspecific praise. And it'd rather it take itself seriously, I'm tired of writers not taking their work seriously.
>>
>>151028287
>Not every piece of fiction needs to reinvent the wheel to be great
No, but comics do.
>Different strokes but it sounds like you just don't get the mythic type characters or stories
As far as Norse mythology, I preferred P. Craig Russell's Ring of the Nibelung and Alex Alice's Siegfried, and as far as mythic superheroes, I prefer The Dark Knight Returns and the first Mage comic by Matt Wagner. To me, Simonson's Thor is not as enjoyable as these.

People get really upset when you go against the grain.
It's especially bad with comics, since there is so little respect for the medium as it is. Anything that's already established as legendary must not be scrutinized in any serious way, since it will likely fall apart.

>really liked Kirby's era of Thor
>hear nothing but good things about Simonson's tenure being a solid continuation of Kirby
>finally read it
>it's alright

Wasn't amazed by it, but thought it was pretty okay all things considered. Certainly a step up from the Moench run where Shooter basically wanted him to turn Thor into Superman (and desu, I'm still pissed about how badly Conway handled the book in the 70's)
>>
>>151034966
I want to read Kirby's run one day.
>>
>>151035732
Oh, it's tops anon! I started reading it out of boredom and got really sucked into it. I think my favorite arcs are "The Troll War" and "The Enchanters" (later bought two Epic Collections because of it too)
>>

>Mage
Oh okay so you legitimately just have bad taste. This thread is making more sense now
>>
>>151028432
>I'd rather it take itself seriously
It does though it's just not embarrassed to be a superhero comic either
>>
>>151036312
Elaborate.
>>
>>151036412
Mage sucks ass. Good art with bad designs, the main character in particular looks too cutesy, and a boring story. Kevin Matchstick might be the whiniest and least redeemable character in comics
>>
>>151018820
you are retarded, thanks for sharing your retard opinion we can now disregard.
>>
>>151036527
Mage: The Hero Discovered is sensational. The cartooning is not going to be to everyone's taste, but I like Wagner's style. The art overall was terrific: vibrant colors, terrific sound effect lettering. There was passion in making it.
The story is engrossing and entertaining, and Matchstick and the crew are interesting. I felt excited reading a comic book again.
>>
>>151036590

i liked it
a lot of people put it up there as one of the best comics ever made which I don’t really agree with but I did think it was good.its always entertaining and full of interesting plots, plus that rough cartoonish art style was really visually appealing especially compared to what was coming out in the early ’80s
hte first and last arcs were my favorites.
>>
>>151035732
It’s fucking great.
>>151035921
I think I like the Ego/Galactus story the best. I want to hang out with the Recorder. Such is my function, such is my fate.
>>
I haven't finished the entire run but I was pretty hype for the issues when Fafnir attacks NYC. The wandering Balder subplot was pretty good too.
>>
>>151036312
Matt Wagner is miles ahead of Simonson. Sit.

Many years ago I read through about half of Kirby’s Thor and loved it. But back then I was reading scans on a computer screen, and hated that, so now I’m a buyfag picking up collected editions. While I wait for Marvel to reprint the 2nd and 3rd of the Kirby omnibuses, I’m trying to pick up any Thor odds and ends. Currently I have:

Thor: Godstorm by Busiek
Thor: Blood Oath by Oeming
Thor: Son of Asgard
Thor: Gods & Deviants (TPB collecting all 4 Rodi miniseries)
Thor: The Mighty Avenger
Thor: The Warriors Three Complete Collection
Thor: Vikings by Ennis
The Trial of Thor (TPB collecting Thor: Truth of History, a bunch of Milligan one-shots, and Jenkins Thor: Heaven and Earth)
Thor: Ages of Thunder (containing all 4 of Fraction’s one-shots from before his ongoing)
I, Whom The Gods Would Destroy GN
The Raven Banner GN

I also have the Simonson Omni, and will eventually pick up the JMS one too. But otherwise, are there any good one-offs or miniseries I’m missing?
>>
Good for you, op.
>>
>>151039906
That's like all of them, guy.
>>
Simonsons' Thor is like Byrne's Fantastic Four run in that it went on too long and got shitty by the end (especially when Walt stopped drawing it and editorial made Sal Buscema basically change his entire art style to imitate Walt's artwork style to trick fans into thinking he was still drawing it).

If Walt had stopped at the end of the Surtur Saga, it would have been legendary. But he went far fucking too long and dragged it out to far and it becomes a chore to read.
