He just didn't do truly mainstream comics. All the other Vertigo guys did some more traditional cape work as opposed to him.

To be fair, he is a better writer than Ditko and O'Neil. Ditko is better as an artist and O'Neil is better as an editor.

Used to get a lot of hate back in the day, too. In the end, yeah it is but so is the rest of his stuff, key term though "fairly popular" and even X-Statix isn't really traditional superhero comics since it's more about fame than beating up bad guys. He just never got that big commercial break.
