I will continue to pirate Laika just for you.
>>
>>151028820
I watched all of them in theaters except Missing Link. I went to Boxtrolls and Kubo opening night and I was the only one there.
>>
I haven't been to a movie theater in over 6 years.

I don’t know what autists like you get out of it, when I guarantee you don’t watch any of this stuff either.

ok

Coraline is objectively Laika's biggest cultural impact and most popular work, followed by a nostalgic appreciation for ParaNorman. Unfortunately, that's about it. Stop-motion tends to thrive paired with horror themes, but they are a studio that wants to attempt something different with each entry.

With how much they've been trying to drum up hype, will their new movie do any good?

>Stop-motion tends to thrive paired with horror themes
I think that's just a bias because Henry Selick's stuff got popular in a short amount of time which inspired a lot of people, because it's not true when you look at the scope of other stop-motion entries.

>Rankin Bass Christmas Movies (Rudolph, Drummer Boy, Jack Frost, etc)
>Aardman Studios (Wallace & Gromit, Chicken Run, Shaun the Sheep, Misadventures with Pirates, etc.)
>Wes Anderson Movies (Fantastic Mr Fox, Isle of Dogs)
>Stoopid Buddy Stoodios (Robot Chicken, SuperMansion, Buddy Thunderstuck, Crossing Swords, Santa Inc)
>ShadowMachine (Moral Orel, Frankenhole)

And then lots of one-off attempts like The PJs, Gumby, Pingu, Bob the Builder, Glenn Martin DDS, mixed media in KaBlam!, and a bunch of other shit I'm forgetting.

Stop-motion lends itself to cuteness and comedy just as much as it does horror, but stuff like Nightmare Before Christmas, James & the Giant Peach, and Coraline are the most famous so they outshine the others.

>>151028820
Bold of you to think most people even know Laika exists. They may know one or two movies but they don't know or care who made them.
>>
>>151029740
Good point, it covers a range. Everyone tends to have Laika, Selick, and Burton in mind. Fantastic Mr. Fox is one of my favorite films of all time.
>>
>>151028820
I watched the movies that seemed appealing in theaters (Coraline, Paranorman, Kubo) and ignored the ones that weren't. Simple as.

Laika was originally Will Vinton studios, but Phil Night (co-founder of nike) basically initiated a hostile takeover, kicking Will out of his own company and installing his nepo-baby son as the new head.

Will Vinton has done a lot of great stuff. Some of my favorites are the Adventures of Mark Twain and the Claymation Comedy of Horrors. He definitely did not deserve what happened to him.

Most people don't like stop-motion. The jerky movements hit the uncanny valley. That's why the two stop-motion films that have stood the test of time, Nightmare Before Christmas & Coraline, are horror movies.

It's satire of horror, but that doesn't make it scary itself. You're not supposed to shit your pants when pic related shows up on the screen.

Kubo is kind of a microcosm of the Laika story in that it was a very personal story for its original writer Shannon Tindle, but he was booted out of the director's chair because the Nike nepobaby really wanted to do it instead.
>>
>>151033569
Who is?
>>
>>151028820
They haven't made a good movie since Coraline.
I watched Kubo and was completely insulted by the ending.
>>
>>151033279
no, you're retarded because you are attempting to make the argument that curse of the were-rabbit is a horror movie, which even a child could tell you is utterly ridiculous.

Coraline is a horror movie. It is intended to spook you. TNBC is more debatable, but it definitely has moments that are intended to come across as creepy. COTWR is meant to make you laugh. Just because it parodies a bunch of old horror cliches does not make it a horror. At no point does it intend or try to frighten or unsettle you.

Laika is so fucking gay and lame, they peaked with Coalmine and never did anything good again
>>
>>151030107
So did Green Book and literally no one talks about it except to talk about movies that won the Oscar for Best Picture despite nobody watching them.

Bob's Birthday beat The Chicken From Outer Space for Best Animated Short. Which show stood the test of time: Bob & Martha or Courage the Cowardly Dog?
>>
>>151034249
When Disney cancelled Shadow King and Selick was allowed to shop the project around to other studios, Laika actually turned him down despite him putting them on the map post-Nike takeover. Officially this was a "We're too busy to take on someone else's project" justification, but I just think Knight didn't want to get mogged again.
>>
>>151028836
I've only been the only person in a theater in an afternoon and then usually only for a majorly indie drama film/foreign film, I think even the foreign animation movies I've seen (like say have had at least one crowded row's worth of people in them)

>>151029632
The problem is that even in foreign countries that appreciate animation more than they do in say the USA, stop-motion that isn't comedy, like Grommet (and Ardmann is a perfect example of someone who tried to aim higher and pitch more and failed, somewhat spectacularly at times, at trying to extend and popularize their brand).

I saw ParaNorman with my dad, and I saw Kubo twice, one with my friends and one alone (The 2nd time was horrible as there was a loud Cuban family next to me). I wanted to watch Boxtrolls in theaters but I was too busy at the time, and I was about to go walking to see Missing Link, but I knew the movie was going to suck ass based on all the previews, so I gave up and watched it on my phone instead on one of those free movie sites when the camrip got uploaded a few days after. I also felt retarded going to see it alone, like as if I was doing it out of obligation for the craft alone and not because the movie genuinely interested me.

I have the Wildwood book and I've read half of it, so I will go see the movie just out of novelty's sake. If this >>151036398
is supposed to be Prue then... Sheesh. I don't know what to tell you. I don't wanna cope but I have seen a more flattering screenshot of her in that one magazine teaser.

Generally speaking, I think this might be the last Laika stop motion movie ever made. I don't know how many bombs they can take even with the Nike money.

That is always a tough pill to swallow. When you genuinely appreciate the artistic merit, but the content within seems uninteresting.

I went to see Kubo by myself; only one other family was in the theatre.

On a related note, LAIKA's writing continues to be its Achille's heel, which was ironically most apparent in the movie about a storyteller. Coraline is the studio's best film, and only because they had Gaiman on board to help craft it.
