Kind of funny how Jay and Silent Bob accidentally became drug PSAs on how being clean is better.

It's way too late. I would've loved for more episodes from the original team. It's a goddamn crime it only got six episodes but the blame is on the people who made the deal to allow that to happen. They could've gotten at least one season with the other one they were offered.

Clerks 2 is not as bad as Clerks 3. Clerks 2 at least commits to being Clerks 2. Clerks 3 is the sitcom season of Seinfeld but about Clerks. Making your third movie about making the first two movies? That's lazy and gay. I can just watch those movies, they're already made. Make Clerks 3 into Clerks 3. Or better yet, don't make Clerks 3 if you literally have nothing to say.

>Kevin Smith is fucking awful now and cannot make anything but shit.
He never could make anything but shit. He found success with Clerks for being "avante garde", but a lot of that just came from the limitations he was forced to work with. He got more ambitious with his writing, but that only exposed his flaws as a director. Take Dogma, for example—it's ultimately a movie that thrived on its edginess, pseudo-intellectualism, and a handful of big-name stars, but once that shine wears off, you realize how fucking unwatchable it is. Every scene is just two people talking with basic-ass shot/reverese-shot editing, until eventually some third party joins the conversation to keep people on their toes.

That's basically Smith's formula for writing a "scene"—have two people disagreeing, then a third person pops up as a "plot twist" to say something slighly perpendicular to what was already being said. In general, Smith tries to disguise this flimsy writing style with his edgy humor, but once you're innoculated against that, you realize how fucking garbage every single scene in every single movie he's ever written is.

The only reason Clerks Animated was good was because other people worked on it besides Smith.
>>
>>151039339
>Holy shit, that guy on the cover has his dick out,
His boxers are still on and where his dick would be is censored. There was nothing to suggest the fat, bearded man's dick was out other than your pervert-faggot (probably liberal) teenage brain.
>>
>>151044359
It's another situation of people imitated it to the point of not being special or unique any longer. What made Kevin Smith stuff fun was the ordinary conversational aspect to it. How he would dedicate 8 minutes of a movie to two guys having a typical conversation about something dorky that was in no way adding to the movie plot. No one else before him would have wasted so much run time on meaningless nothing conversation. Or the very normal life nothing event happening in the movie that makes it incredibly relatable to common viewers.

Thing is, everyone has been doing it since 5 minutes after Clerks came out that it's not really that interesting of a thing any more. It's in every episode of Venture Brothers and Harley Quinn. Half of Joss Whedon's work was adding in typical nobody conversation into scifi/fantasy scenes. Everyone else imitated it until it was a normal aspect of entertainment.

I thought Smith really showed his weakness when he tried adding in random wacky humor like in half of Mallrats. It was awful and each time he tried doing high concept comedy it was fucking terrible.
>>
>>151040216
It's the massive tonal shift. Clerks 2 goes all in being a wacky buddy comedy with hijinks and donkey shows.
Clerks 3 is some pathetic mopey cry for help on part of Smith who wanted to make some overly dramatic piece of shit about a suicidally depressed guy and his equally depressed middle aged friends who hate themselves.
>>
>>151044949
>Thing is, everyone has been doing it since 5 minutes after Clerks came out that it's not really that interesting of a thing any more.
That's pretty true. It's basically the hallmark of a writer that "has things to say" but doesn't know how to structure a plot or even just a single scene around communicating those ideas, so instead you just get characters acting as mouthpieces.

In retrospect, I think the thing that really finished killing any appeal Kevin Smith-style blathering had is the fact that we have social media now. Nobody wants to fucking sit through a movie full of "hot takes", when that kind of stuff is just the whitenoise of the internet.
>>
>>151045011
>Clerks 2 goes all in being a wacky buddy comedy
No, it did not.
>>
>>151045011
Yeah it all just comes off as up it's ass. Like he really thought this was going to be deeply moving when he killed off Dante.
>>
>>151044386
You know you can take your dick out from the boxer’s fly, right?
>>
>>151045479
Yes, but it's covered on the box—you can't tell whether he has it out or not. The only reason you would assume it was out through the power of suggestion is if you were a faggot who wanted to see a fat guy's dick. You aren't a faggot, are you, anon?
>>
>>151045997
You are
>>
>>151046035
That may be true. But at least I didn't fantasize about a fat man's penis on a cartoon DVD cover. How embarrassing for you.
>>
I think Smith lucked out in that he made films for people who were so desperate for any kind of acknowledgement that they'd be willing to accept just about anything if it even vaguely referenced the kind of things they liked. You saw the same shit with crap like Ready Player One or Scott Pilgrim.
>>
>>151046374
But I like Scott Pilgrim... :(
>>
>>151046374
Smith's whole thing worked when his movies were about fairly typical normal early 20 somethings getting into everyday type adventures and being normal guys. Not big time heroes or inspirational types. He had a kind of Regular Joe sort of storytelling that really resonated with mid 90s generation X.

The problems come from the fact that, this is all he can do. He has no other range than writing about himself and his friends doing things that are only cool and interesting to someone who is 20 in 1995. The further into the future and the older the characters get, the less interesting the movies become. You can see it in his work.
>1994, makes a fun movies about two 22 year olds thinking about what to do with their lives
>2006, makes a movie about aging guys realizing they never did anything with their lives and they need to make a change now
>2023, makes a movie about two sad, depressed old guys that never did shit with their lives. One desperately wants to leave his mark in the world before he dies, the other dies of old.

Smith never really evolved or learned any new skills or any new stories to tell. Jay and Silent Bob reboot is more of the same shit.
>>
>>151045997
Why would they place that box over the guy’s crotch? They clearly wanted people to think it was covering his schlong, on top of the title saying "Uncensored" implying it’s something sleazy.
>>
>>151046339

>>
>>151040216
>>151045011
>>151047511
I don't even know what in the fuck was going on with Smith when he made Clerks 3. It is a massively different movie in tone from the others to the point that it looks like someone else made it.

I always felt like clerks should have focused on that new generation thing since Dante and Randal's story is fully told. Dante should have evolved into the shitty boss that takes vacations while lying to his employees, then not having any realization that he became the shit boss. The new 22 year old working on the Quick Stop should be having a really shit day and then Dante has that moment of realization near the end.

Randal disappeared a decade ago. No early 50s Jay or Silent Bob either. Actually make up some new losers that hang out and never buy anything.
>>
>>151045011
>Clerks 2 and JaSB Strike back feel like he's aping dumb and wacky 2000s comedies
>Zach and Miri was trying to be discount Apatow
He really lost his original identity as a filmmaker and failed to find a new one throughout the 2000s
>>
>>151031700
No, but maybe a special at least. And only if its flashbacks to the original series.
>>
It's amazing Kevin Smith hasn't evolved past weed man after three decades.
>>
>>151047762
For some reason he never really could graduate up to the level of a normal film maker. The best he could do was View Askew stuff which is really just hiring all his close friends and playing movie set with his friends. Every time he was hired to use actors he was not already closely affiliated with on a script he did not write, it's a disaster.

>>
>>151047854
What's disappointing is that I'd be okay with him sticking to close friends and lower budgets if he actually got out of his comfort zone, but he never really tried. He did different genres sure but it all had the same tone as his askew stuff. Would've loved to see him try some cape shit that wasn't on the CW
>>
>>151048059
If you've watched any of Smith's stand up Q&A's, he's admitted as much that his capeshit would be the same as his normal movies. Just 90 minutes of Green Hornet and Kato talking about random shit and then it ends with them busting a robbery. What nobody comprehended back when he stated this was that he was being serious.
>>
>>151047854
He is a bad director. The only movie he even tried to direct is Chasing Amy, which is far and away his best one. Everything else, even the movies I like, are incredibly amateurish.

Clerks 3 should have had that original ending where Dante is shot by some guy robbing the place in the last minute.

Dante finally turns his life around, realizes he doesn't have it so bad, this is going to be the first day of the rest of his life, guy with a gun walks in...

No one has ever really seen a filmmaker just not get any better like that. Even low grade B-Movie horror directors eventually learned the trade and got better and eventually started making some watchable shit. Smith just never improved at all, and most of his better movies are based around hiring actors that have a better grasp of what they are doing.
>>
>Rude Clerks with names like Dante and Handall...

>>151048235
It's funny, when you're younger and dumber and you watch those Kevin Smith specials you really feel for him when he talks about what a nightmare Bruce Willis was to work with, but with a little bit of age and distance you realize that Kevin Smith was a nightmare for Willis to work with.
>>
>>151048276
To most people that are in some level of the film industry, they always recognized that it was Smith who was the annoying asshole to be on set with the whole time and Willis was always pretty agreeable to most things in most productions. The issue was that back in 2005 Smith had the large cult of fans and did all the talks at universities, so his part of the story is what spread.

But Smith had the most correct take on Chevy Chase. Chevy was too damn obnoxious for even 02 era Smith to put up with for more than 5 minutes.

It's how that kind of thing goes. It's fun to see teens and 20 somethings get into wacky shenanigans. It's sad to see 40+ middle age people get into wacky shenanigans...while still pretending they are 20 somethings wearing clothes that are decades out of date. It's also why the It's Always Sunny gang is fucking sad and depressing to look at. You normally expect people to grow out of that sort of life, and when you se they haven't then it looks really bad that they never grew up or made a life for themselves.

>>151054766
Yeah, plot shenanigans are gonna plot shenanigans but they're really kind of ignoring potential plot ideas just so they can act like it's still the 90s. I don't think anyone really has to outgrow their hobbies if they're reasonable about it but there's a real lack of, for want of better term, adultness to it all. Like why are we not seeing them trying to take care of their chil... oh right. Which is another point. They force a massive tragedy on Dante, undoing the ending of the second movie just so they can regress everything
>>
>>151054766
Weird thing about that is Clerks 2 had the whole theme of Dante and Randal were getting older now and they needed to grow the fuck up and start doing adult things. It was that whole realization Dante had in holding near the end, that he was too old for this kind of shit and he needed to settle down and go live a normal adult life. And the movie basically ended with him finally moving on from childish crap and becoming an adult with a wife and kid.

Clerks 3 seems to want to ignore all the Clerks 2 stuff entirely and take them back to wacky buddies at the Quick Stop with Jay and Silent Bob selling weed outside like it's 1995 all over again.

So it kind of seems like a bad idea to bring back the thing that people already hated to the point of removing once before.

It was a stupid idea and it was the right decision to cut it. The film is about Dante being bitchy about how other people treat him, only for a simple twist where Randal loses paitence and points out that Dante also treats others badly. The only throughline through the movie is Dante learning to be more humble and it's made meaningless if he's murdered for pocket change.

>was supposed to
BUT DIDN'T. Do you have any idea how much movies change during production. Your original intentions don't mean shit. What matters is the movie that was made. You're an idiot.

>You're not allowed to hate or criticize this concept
Saying "IT'S SHIT! IT'S SHIT! IT'S SHIT!" isn't criticism. It's just being a loudmouth faggot. Which 90% of you retards are. You don't actually watch or want to understand context or subtext. You just want to parrot youtube retards with the most memeworthy catchphrases.

>What matters is the movie that was made
The movie you never bothered to watch because it's older than you are and longer than a tiktok video. Now who's the idiot?

Enlighten us; why is Dante dying good in either film?

I rewatched Dogma a while ago, and I was shocked how bad it was.

Because it ties back to his explanation of why Empire is the best star wars movie: Because life is a series of downer endings. It also ties back to his griping about how he wasn't supposed to be there today. It's comedy and tragedy at it's purest height and nobody understands this because they want their happy wacky comfy feels uwu.

Or you're just here to shitpost and not contribute to any kind of discussion. It doesn't matter.

That sounds more like charecterizing him as a grumpy whiner since the second part of a series leads to the third which has a bittersweet (with plenty of sweet) ending, not a downer one.

>And the movie basically ended with him finally moving on from childish crap and becoming an adult with a wife and kid.
It's not *just* that, it's the realization that he doesn't need to stop having fun and leave all of his friends in order to become an adult. It's a lot less "you need to stop doing childish things and grow up," and more "growing up doesn't mean buying into a weird, preconceived notion of what being a grown up looks like." It's the C.S Lewis quote:
>When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up.
The third movie shits on all of that by literally murdering his character development, so he can be Punished Dante, which is exactly like Clerks 1 and 2 Dante but cries more.

How's atheism+ these days?

Who said that?

I'm so mad at the anon who correctly said Clerks 3 should've been about him realizing he was an asshole boss and coming around on it. With a superior ending of instead of calling in the 20 something on his day off to cover for someone Dante does it instead bc he's the boss.

Yes, it's safe. It's very safe
