Welcome back to Winner Histories, where I'll be going over how each of our Mr. /co/lympus Winners rose to the top in their year of glory!>Skeletor, from "Masters of the Universe"The fiendish skeletal villain seeking to conquer Eternia and /co/lympus alike, he was defeated in Quarterfinals in both 2019 and 2021, but finally returned in 2023 to destroy his enemies. While his seed had been slowly slipping throughout his tournament appearances, with 2023 being his lowest yet at #23, that wasn't enough to stop him from laying waste to /co/. Let's trace the steps of Skeletor's invasion, to see how he got the last laugh against his foes.The first hero to stand in Skeletor's way was Philip J. Fry, from "Futurama". Skeletor is unknown in Fry's future, but that just meant Skeletor hadn't tried hard enough yet - a fact he quickly corrected by using his magic to claim 56% of the votes, 232-176. Fry is what can best be described as a "midcarder", so his loss to the might of Skeletor is anything but surprising.The Round 2 match was of interest, however - it was Benson, from "Regular Show". Benson was extremely hyped up going into this year, having secured a seed of #6. However, Skeletor found the gumball machine's efforts amusing, and smashed him with 57% of the votes, 187-139. Benson has yet to break past the second/third-round wall, but admittedly few can stand up to the brilliance of Skeletor.The third round opponent for Skeletor was none other than Shaggy, from "Scooby-Doo". This E8 veteran was convinced that Skeletor was simply a kooky old man under a skull mask, but the only thing under Skeletor's skull was maniacal evil, a fact that he demonstrated by stealing away 57% of the votes again - 184-135. Battles between Top 8 veterans are inevitable, but Skeletor was determined to not be done in this early.

Skeletor was sure that he stepped on something after grabbing 64% of the vote, 214-119, but he can't see anything of note on his boot, so oh well.Is short villainy a theme this tournament? Because the Quarterfinalist that Skeletor faced was Lord Farquaad from "Shrek", a fresh face in the Top 8. Lord Farquaad had become a crowd favorite... but Skeletor's favorite thing was destroying the weak. He then proved this by getting 64% of the vote, and blasting Farquaad away 201-109. So far, Skeletor had had a quite pleasant bracket.Except that would seemingly come to an end, as Skeletor's toughest battle loomed in the Semifinals: Samurai Jack, a fellow three-peat Top 8 placer, fresh off defeating Hank Hill. Skeletor had heard about this foolish samurai, and so he was prepared. After a fierce struggle, Skeletor prevailed, banishing Samurai Jack with 54% of the vote, 182-150. The Samurai was thus cursed to wander the tournaments for at least another two years.The final battle of 2023 would be villain vs. villain, as Zim from "Invader Zim" came ray guns blazing. And furthermore, Zim may have had an underhanded scheme in play, with a Host on his side. But Skeletor didn't care, since his evil eclipsed all others. With a wave of his staff, he bewitched 55% of the voters, and secured an ultimate victory, 188-149, much to the ire of his rival.Skeletor made tournament history by being the first character to ever make Top 8 three separate times and then go on to win, perhaps indicating his eternal appeal. But does that just mean he could only win after the true All-Stars had already won? Or is Skeletor's villainy the type to lie in wait, and claim /co/lympus when everyone is least expecting it?

Something I should have brought up when these two dramas were happening but still bugs me if I never say it is that unless it's a one to one seed replacement which is usually only possible with the 128th seed which can be replaced no problem, replacing a character in the bracket is actually a huge deal. It bumps everyone up a seed and changes all the matches and brackets. Not all seeds are created equal so we can't just assume all the higher seeds beat lower seeds and sometimes circumstances make a statistically stronger lower seed match up and crush a statistically weaker higher seed.

Wakko had a bit of heat on him from how he had reshuffled the bracket, so his mischief was worth punishing. And punish him Spider-Man did, securing his biggest win, not only in the tournament, but EVER, with 72% of the vote, at 302-117. Wakko can rest easy knowing he's gone down in history with his bracket prank and his loss to a future champion.A more powerful opponent was in the second round, and it was Norville "Shaggy" Rogers, from "Scooby-Doo", ready to unmask this kook. Hm, again? Feels like Shaggy has been turning up a lot in these Winner Histories. Well, Spider-Man's a pro at fighting recurring villains thanks to his own rogues' gallery, and so he tied up Shaggy with 55% of the vote, 212-168. I'm starting to think part of the problem is we've made many changes and compromises to please tourneyheads that have cost us casual voters and made things worse with the mods. If this was just a casual popularity contest like in the first couple of years we could probably freely do off-season threads and talk about it in random threads or even promote it more. We used to do that all the time, the 2018OP posted it everywhere to try to promote it and even after that you'd see a lot of "Will X do well in Mr. /co/ this year" threads or monthly promotion threads. But because of all the RPing and meta stuff and the constant crossboarding the jannies contain it and fuck us out of doing that. Or imagine a regular Anon coming in and strolling into see this. They just want to vote for their favorite character and maybe they do, but one look at the thread is filled with weird side tournaments and meta stuff they've never heard of and they don't feel welcome and leave. We just saw this conflict in action at Playgirl where the tourneyfolk clashed hard with the trash natives over the fat girls. We've made it way harder to bring it new people just to appease a small group of hardcores that's gradually shrinking.
