I think it is possible for good qualities to rub off on people. The gist of your argument isn't wrong though, a big issue is the economy, and the general idea that things are "not enough". People will work hard to get good, not all, but more than now. Social structure, communities, culture (spending habits). and technology (infrastructure of money).
