Tell me some parts of stories that you hate, why, and or what you think would've made the story better. Beginnings, endings, or whole tales, I'm looking for opinions on /co/ storytelling to learn what sort of things put a sour taste in people's mouths.

Eh, I should've done this before Halloween. Nobody is gonna see this I guess with that going on.

Something I hate is characters acting entirely out of character (forgive the redundancy) just to create a conflict. I can forgive a character acting irrationally due to his emotions and creating a problem that could have been solved with prudence, and I can forgive characters making stupid decisions. Because in those cases I can understand the flaws of one being human and not always being smart or rational. But when everyone is being too dense/stupid for the sake of it, and act in ways that don't make sense for them throughout all the episode... that's infuriating. Even more so when all logic is thrown out the window and nothing makes sense, and even the writers don't care why the cinflict exists in the first place.

I also hate any character that reaches a level of stupidity that is not enjoyable anymore, because it's all that defines the character. Like Beavis and Butthead. Johnny Bravo is there too, but not as aggravating.

Yeah, that one in particular always speaks to me as the writing of someone who just doesn't give a fuck. Especially when the character is previously characterized as dumb but good hearted, that especially gets on my nerves because it so often becomes the character's actual personality going forward as they get flanderized.

Romance drama for the sake of drama, especially in non-romance. It feels like a way for lazy writers to create character conflict.

Do you have an example where it does work and one where it doesn't? I think the romantic drama between Ulrich and Yumi had some highs and lows.

Same reason I tapped out of adventure time.

Wish is really bad at this. It has a lot of moments that would normally be amazing to me but felt like some exec somewhere reigned it in.

King Magnifico is the worst offender. He should have been a tragic villain. He had everything taken from him once, becane obsessed with preventing it from ever happening again, and in his fear, only manage to seal his fate. He loses everything again, but this time, it's his own damn fault.

There are hints of this, but it's always undercut. His defeat is amazing, Asha harnessing the power of the community she loves and belongs to, that Magnifico sought only to control, to free herself while Magnifico is dragged into hell by demons of his own making.

And it's immediately undercut the next scene where hise wife, who like twenty minutes ago was mourning as she saw everything good in her husband wither and die, hang him in the dungeon as he goes "OH NOES NOT TEH DUNGEON IT'S SO SMELLEH"

Plots where an entire group of characters has to be mad at the protagonist, even ones that wouldn't care or have nothing to do with what made some of them upset

Ok, but he did eat the last cookie, that should be punishable by law

I didn't mind the Ulrich/Yumi stuff in the beginning but it really begins to drag by the third season. Hell I started questioning if any of the main characters actually liked each other at the same time.

I really hate those endings where the characters won but at a tragic cost of some kind, like someone sacrifices themself or whatever, only for that to just be a fakeout and everything's perfectly fine. there's no quicker way to cheapen your ending

Oh, man, I FEEL THAT! It's even worse when you shed genuine tears. It feels like they are laughing at your face. Because at that point, you definitely won't be happy to see the person that died (or whatever power they had to give up) is immediatly restored

I know almost no series that has handled a romantic interest appropriately. The most commons are the one that have to get stretched ALL show going nowhere, and the relationships that just happen with little to no development. The former gets boring fast, the latter ranges between meh and "I'm happy it happened, but I wasn't invested." Too many examples to list, but I'll just say Ranma, Goku and Chichi, and (in the better examples) Gohan and Videl, Percedal and Evangelyne.

The only one I can think of that took its time to develop (and it was a focus in the story) was Mark and Atom Eve.

I don't know how to consider something like Trevor and Sypha, because I don't remember there being a romantic development, but one moment to another they tell you they are fucking. So I guess it happened and I was happy about it, but not invested.

Ok, maybe I should give Fry and Leela an honorable mention.
