Whatever happens in Boxtown stays in Boxtown because we ain't ever seeing this. ITT: Post animation vaporware
>>151075262The creator is a massive alcoholic and probably wasted all the crowdfund moneyKickstarter, not even once
>"indie animation is expensive, this cannot be done without 100,000 dollars">I'm hiring Tara Strong and Alex Hirsch btwWere they fucking stupid? I know they're hollywood brained but I think the first rule of any independent production is "don't waste money on stupidly expensive shit you don't need".
>>151075370Yeah. Obviously their clout would be beneficial but that's for people with money.Indie animation has to be more like horror film creators, find some niche concept and follow through with it at as low budget as possible.
>>151075262kek
>>151075370>>151075435While I'm sure they didn't work for free, it's highly likely that the creator had connections and that they did it as a favor to him for well under their typical rate. That tends to come with stipulations. For all we know, they could have banged out the lines in one take at a con or something recorded into an iphone.
>>151075262>>151075283We've yet to see ANY developments from this whatsoever. Considering the mainstream animation world has been a pile of smoldering ruins, my bet is that the guy behind this used all the crowdfunding cash to pay his rent and bills while he was out of work and now either needs to shit out an episode AND backer rewards with zero budget or hope that everyone somehow forgets.
>>151075262Anything made by Shockwave Animation. The "studio" was announced and then in very quick succession they started announcing projects left and right without having so much as a short to their name. One project anywhere close to typical episode length is tough enough. When a brand new indie studio is this ambitious, it usually means they're woefully inexperienced and we're not going to end up seeing a single thing from them.
>>151075262Wasn't Alex Hirsch doing this?
>>151075262my pilot circa 2023 which I never finished storyboarding
>>151079604What was it about, anon?
>>151075262This was so over-hyped. Between the celebrity stunt casting, the crowdfunding blitz, the videos proclaiming how this was the way forward since the mainstream industry was a smoldering pile of rubble…Two crowd funding campaigns, a main character firing, and switch from 2d to 3d later, and we still haven’t seen a solid minute of animation.
>>151077292Hirsch's lines in the trailer sounded like they are recorded at home so you're probably right
>>151080342A secret lab developing ai technology but one of the ai's is sentient and after the protag of the story breaks into the lab and gets away with the ai, she and her brother become teen fugitives on the run with an ai companion that manifests himself in hologram form. Also, the villain was a female dictator with a sexy voice. I had pretty much the whole thing voice acted but my writing from 2 years ago is pretty meh and I don't think the pilot I wrote back then is really entertaining at all or how I vision the series now
>>151080707Post wip
>>151080707Do an animatic anyway, post it online to start building a following, and then work on a follow up that is more in line with your vision. Nothing will ever be perfect. Just get it out and keep moving forward.
>>151079604>>151080707The idea sounds cool. Make it happen, anon. Finish the storyboards.
>>151075262I know anons liked to shit on this, but I really wanted to see at least one episode. The idea was cool and the brief teaser animation from the crowdfund promos looked visually interesting. I don't know what happened to this, but it would suck if it's actually dead.
>>151081112I think it's telling that there have been no updates for quite awhile. Usually when things are actually happening, crew members are posting sketches or otherwise trying to build hype. Did they really just take the money and run?
>>151075262This died once he fired tara strong over her calling out hamas, And to switching to 3d animation>>151075262
>>151081543>over her calling out hamasthat's not how I recall it going down, though anons sure do love to frame it that way. It was very poorly handled, though. Announcing a firing through social media without having a private conversation first is a real bitch move. Especially when it seems like she did them a favor.
>>151078464he voices a character, but I don't think he's doing anything production-wise.
>>151077401>Shockwave AnimationThat's a deep cut. Do you have a person ax to grind with them or something?
>>151075283>>151077329>>151080556I'm really mad at myself for having donated to Boxtown's first crowdfund. The animatic clips in their campaign vid led me to believe these industry vets actually knew what they were getting into, but every "update" since then has proven the opposite. The moment they revealed the two [original] lead VAs, I was reminded of what a fool and recovering alcoholic Charlie Gavin is. I'm starting to worry he really IS trying to quietly wait it out until people forget this project ever existed...
>>151083246How much did you donate?
>>151083287$100 I felt like such an idiot when the Alex Hirsch/Tara Strong announcements made everyone turn on it (myself included)
>>151075262Enter finally abandoned the project and is replacing it with basically the same show.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PB54E1QhOXI
>>151085451oh my god, I almost forgot about this. They didn't even come close to funding. Also, super telling that she applied to USC on a whim and then went. Must be nice to have super rich parents.
>>151077401>IWEYGYou mean those 2 Daria OCs got their own show? That tranny got so unbelievably lucky. Tiktok is a powerful thing
>>151075262Did this ever come out?
>>151086396Define "got their own show". Shockwave announces these things and makes logos. That's about as far as they get.
>>151086457yes. It was a student film. It was completed and "released". The students who worked on it graduated and moved on. This was never anything more than a student project. It got some buzz because of the lewds, but for anyone anticipating this, it was pretty underwhelming. It was pretty typical of a thesis project.
>>151075283I thought he was recovering?
>>151086457the fact that this student project got any buzz at all makes me wonder if the whole "don't lewd my characters guys, seriously (teehee)" was on purpose.
>>151080731I'll post the audio track because I'm not currently working on this at all anywayhttps://litter.catbox.moe/mzxbyd.mp4>>151080816I kinda screwed myself over in writing the first episode to be 15 minutes so even if I wanted to finish it I'm also a full time college student now and an animator on two other projects and I'm directing a student film on top of that so there's no room to really work on this specific project right now
>>151086603If it’s any consolation, they definitely would have fucked this up.
>>151075262How the fuck was Alex Hirsch able to get zero (0) shows off the ground ever since he rocketed off the ground from with GF?
>>151087146he just voiced for Boxtown. He's not responsible for anything having to do with actual production. That's being taken care of by a recovering alcoholic and pothead who has ADHD. So we should see some updates in another 2 weeks
>>151087146>>151087182Didn't he produce Inside Job?
>>151087193yeah. Which was a fairly successful show until it got purged due to executive bullshit
Do we dare summon him?
>>151087193>>151087623If the rumors are true, he was replaced on IJ because he couldn't keep the budget under control
>>151088334But he wasn’t replaced. Also, I hadn’t heard that. He had no problems delivering on time or staying within budget for GF. Seems like the sort of thing anons would make up.
>>151083492Yeah, it makes it seem like the creator is a bit of a star fucker.
>>151085451This was overly ambitious. Most new writers start with short films. She decided to start with a series. Studio smokescreen is also a vaporware studio. They’ve had 2 unsuccessful crowdfund campaigns that I know of but no actual work under their belt as an indie identity. The lead artist has some credits to his name, but it seems like it’s a John “F” Fountain thing where he exploits…er…teaches new talent.
>>151075262How do they take all that money and just ghost? I mean morally. How does someone do something like that and not feel awful about themself?
>>151088440>lol let me just drop a random Kickstarter for this cartoon pitch I haven't made ANY effort to build prior hype towards This makes Studio Smokescreen look like an actually competent indie studio: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q5-LzydaVEQ
>>151089094OofMore effort should have been put into that pitch/trailer. I think creators often think that their idea is cool enough that people will get excited about it when they hear it, but some effort really needs to be put into scripting and producing these things. The pitch was only about 2.5 minutes, but I found myself skipping through it. There is no hook. "Chosen one needs to save the world. Oh, and she was a struggling actor." While the "chosen one" is a classic setup for a series, it obviously needs to be more than that. As Genndy asked Pan in his disastrous Adult Swim pitch, "What motivates the characters? What's the heart of the story?". Saying the show is about a chosen one who needs to save the world is like saying Finding Nemo is about the ocean. I think she clearly needed to spend more time fleshing out the concept. This seems extremely half-assed and the fact that someone can put such little work into something and then expect people to give them money is mildly offensive.
>he donated to an indie cartoon's crowdfund
>>151090190good on him for supporting something he wanted to see. That particular campaign didn't work out so well, but if more anons supported projects they wanted to see get made instead of bitching about everything maybe we'd have more cool stuff to watch.
>>151075262We're never getting those rewards, are we :(
