>>151086897Nope, first gen, born in the glorious Soviet Union and escaped during the crumbling. She did lean a lot on her "russian identity" in her earlier works so I wonder how she manages now that being Russian is a cultural sin.Her most recent work almost entirely eliminates russian, pardon, "eastern european influences" in favour to standard milquetoast body positivity messages. Charming drawings, tho.
>>151087338If she's using being Russian just in the exotic sense, I don't see who and why would critique her for it. There are plenty of immigrants from shitholes with evil scumbags in charge who do fine still calling themselves culturally part of their people. It's being pro-government that makes you a piece of shit. And technically, with how turbo-ass the Russian Federation was and is at producing culture, all of it is actually Soviet or imperial or Rus'-ian anyway and has nothing to do with the current country despite how its propagandists are desperately screaming the opposite (because even they know modern Russia has produced nothing of value and are trying to appropriate things they don't even have the only claim to because they were just one of the states inside a bigger country).
>>151087490Rooskies do produce their own stuff, it's mostly for an internal market and after sanctions even more (let's not forget the Masha and the Bear thing, as mediocre as it was). Brosgol leaned heavily on her "traditional russian-ness" in Be Prepared, and we're talking expat russians (so intrinsically butthurt about the Union) and the discourse got kinda rabid after 2022. Her keeping it "exotic" as a migrant makes sense, you're right.

My one complaint with this is the middle. It's a fantastic story and an amazing character arc for both characters. I just wish it'd been longer, with more scenes of Anya defrosting and opening up to her new friend, forging a bond. Teaching Emily about the modern world, getting Emily's insight into how things changed, seen Emily delight in her new life. Maybe even have a scene where she put her foot down and went "nope, the old way WAS better" about something.I still think the book ended the way it should have, with Emily turning on Anya then becoming increasingly unhinged as it all began slipping away, leading up to the final "I get it. But what you want doesn't even exist" confrontation. But as good as the book was, it would've been even better with a little more room to develop the girls and forge their friendship.

>>151098381No. She was obviously jealous of an adult woman being romantically involved with an adult man she had an unrequited desire for.
>>151080577>>151098092>what you want doesn't even existI mean that sounds like a clever line but I'm not sure it really is.>wanting how others look, what they have, who they haveI get that it's bad to murder people out of envy, but people exist who definitely do have things to envy. This seems to be entirely based on the fact the girl Anya was jealous of was getting cucked and proved to not so enviable after all, ignoring the fact there are plenty of people with enviable lives who aren't getting cucked.
>>151076456Midnight bump.
>>151098685>>151098696So they were related, right? Not just thematically, but genetically.
>>151100510Probably distant cousins because Emily never scored
>>151099244She wants to have the man she loved and live a perfect happy life with him. And... that ship sailed a hundred years ago. She tried to live vicariously through Anya, but Anya is a living breathing person with her own hopes and dreams, not a doll to be played with. Which brings us to the second problem: Emily also wants to just always get her own way and attain happiness without worrying about other people's feelings. Anya says "I'm no longer interested in that dude"? Well clearly Anya's wrong. She'll need to be FORCED back onto the path Emily wants! It doesn't work. There's no scenario where Emily gets what she wants. She's not going to have that happy relationship for herself, and she's not going to have everyone just give in to her whims.

I can't believe I missed this thread.I love Anya's Ghost.
>>151100711My issue is that really only applies to Emily because she's dead. It doesn't really apply to Anya or the reader who's alive, it's not some kind of universal truth which feels like how it's presented. It's less that what she wants doesn't exist, more>You specifically didn't get what you wanted in life, fucked up any chance you might have had by committing murder-suicide and definitely can't have it now you're a ghostIs it good to be a controlling self-interested fuck? No. But do people like that exist in reality and get what they want? Yes. I thought the twist is Emily was never with the guy at all, she was just this obsessed stalker he rejected outright. >>151117448It's not just there, I'm fairly sure I've found manga, anime and TV shows about how those who stick out too much become acceptable targets of ostracism. Nail that sticks out gets hammered.Though it depends, often a class president or the kid of someone important can or is expected to overperform to get into a good college and aren't picked on for it, but that's likely a narrative thing more than a reality.I also vaguely recall Brit boarding school shows and stories about anyone doing too well in class being the subject of humiliation later.

>>151120197>Why does Sean make it sound like she's doing him a disservice? He likely wanted to keep a good impression with Anya until he got to bang her.He probably wanted Liz to tell him she was out there sooner so he could be dressed and tell Amber to keep quiet sooner instead of having to ask who she was talking to and scurry out to maintain appearances last minute.

>>151117665Emily was obviously in love with that guy if him being with another girl put her in a murderous rage, even if it wasn't reciprocated. So at least from her delusional point of view she was cheated on. So it's very strange that she not only didn't become hostile, but also decided to continue pursuing this other guy who was cheating on his current girl friend.

>>151122662Thing with Dima is that he helps Anya with the research but he doesn't do anything to illustrate himself as dependable beyond that. He asked what she was muttering about, but didn't follow her and grab her last minute from falling after she was shoved. Liz is no better really, but I guess her being pretty but pathetic draws more sympathy for bystanding, it's only really Siobhan who went out her way to stick up and watch out for Anya really, but it seems more from them both being out of place rather than any lez vibe. All this is likely because none of them were intended to be Sean's romantic opponent but compel Anya reflect on her ideas about fitting in by discarding her real self and dignity.
>>151121140Lesson rejected. Ghost daughterwife too important.
>>151122956I think his persistence toward Anya throughout the book as well as his displayed reverence toward his motherland's culture conveys a degree of reliability. He was at least consistent. His deference to their teacher despite the fact that he has probably faced consequences for it before is another illustration of that.Anya would obviously never pair with Dima because despite her displayed desire to form a pair bond based on intimacy and honesty, she still has hypergamy as a high priority. One could interpret that there is a missed opportunity wherein Anya and Dima could have formed a friendship and mutual respect, but I think that may run contrary to Anya's characterization. She resolutely rejected her heritage in the first pages, and her arc was all about letting go of what she latched onto in lieu of rejecting her upbringing. She would never go back; she is all about moving on.All that said, I would have liked to see another scene between her and Dima.
>ghost girl slowly gains physical form>this means she can now actually do all the things she wanted to>self sabotages and dies againwhat was the point? she could've had a life

>>151120089how do we think this would go down? what would convince Anya to go for it?
>>151124084Blackmail and possession
>>151123380>All that said, I would have liked to see another scene between her and Dima.Agreed. Instead of Anya wandering off by herself I don't think it would have hurt to>have her spot Dima sulking away into the woods without his glasses on>She follow to make sure he doesn't fall down a hole of his own>finds him searching on hands and knees for his glasses after they were thrown by bullies>Anya bumps into Siobhan trying to smoke hidden behind a tree>Siobhan assumes Anya's crawling around through bushes looking for her last cig she dropped, compelling her to offer one>Anya declines, explains she's helping Dima, apologizes about everything>Same remark from a stunned Siobhan about Anya being weird, but silently helping the two look as well.>Anya and Dima thanking her for different reasons. It would have been a lot at once, but hammer home even if not everything's great the three are going to look out for each other: Dima's brains helping the girls with school problems, Siobhan's bravery helping with bullies and Anya's' heart helping bring them together.
>>151124169that's how it starts but eventually Anya will be taking the initiative on her own

>>151128344362 days until the next thread
>>151128344>>151128416It's odd she never made Anya and her spiritualist abilities into a series. It would lend to that easily and probably would be successful. Considering this was her most popular work and she ended up working on more ghost-related stuff afterwards.
>>151128547some things should stay as one shots, not everything needs to be a huge series
>>151128586It's not like this was some epic with the perfect ending. This was a teen drama and a ghost story that could easily be continued. Anya's arc was becoming an ever so slightly better person and getting over a crush.
>>151128547>>151128586>>151128702I wouldn't mind a time skip but keeping the ghost thing in the first book. Then again, this story is self-contained enough, it almost feels like it should be a one and done, unless she has another plan for Anya's story.
>>151123514takes too much effort and willpower to hold it together though, and the fact that she's mentally unstable really doesn't help. one wrong comment and she'll get pissed off and her "physical form" suddenly crumbles because her focus shifted
>>151128547sometimes people just want to tell one story
>>151128702nice as it'd be, i really don't know what else she could add. anya finally accepts herself. the story's main theme seems to be about envy and wanting what other people have, and anya's gotten over that. she accepts herself better, she's not ashamed of her heritage or who she is, and she's not trying to be something she's not or chase after something that wouldn't really make her happy. plus, emily's gone. what would a new ghost add? even if it's a timeskip to an adult anya, what sort of thing would she be tackling that a new ghost would have to be added to give her a lesson?
>>151128702I don't think Anya has the specific ability to see ghosts and it's more Emily chose to be seen by her. When Emily didn't want to be found Anya couldn't keep track of her.
>>151129126>>151129426>>151129448>>151129671In part two, Anya meets a new ghost and then other people with ghost partners and all the ghosts have special abilities and can possess their partner or a weapon and vie for the title of Shaman Queen.Or, you know, just continue the teen drama and solve ghost-related mysteries. Both have unending potential for stories.
>>151129748i think you're looking for a completely different story at that point than what anya's ghost is about. the first is just a shonen manga about ghosts, and the second is just a mystery story that involves ghosts. it's not really exclusive to the setting of anya's ghosti'm sure there's some sort of story that already does what you're looking for anyway. it's been a long time since i've last read it, but i think mieruko-chan does something similar to your second idea where the main character works with some other characters to solve ghost-related cases (though, that's a bit later - iirc, at the start, it's just a slice-of-life comedy story about a girl who can see ghosts)
