Butch Hartman's new Christian cartoon, The Greatest Thing Ever, is anything but. It is an hour of torment, pain, and anguish. One of the worst cartoons I had reviewed. Why?Well, back in the 2000s, I used to review cartoons on a small obscure show on That Guy with the Glasses. A friend and I dressed up as the "loony toony detectives" reviewing shitty cartoons, some being of a religious nature.Our last episode was about some jhentai anime featuring a school full of girls with huge boobs. Eugh. But that didn't hold a candle to what I had seen in The Greatest Thing Ever: A Garden Cartoon by Butch Hartman. I had initially thought about bringing my show back with a two-parter reviewing this movie. My old friend had even scheduled a time when we could start filming the episode once I had finished the script.But, what I had seen prompted me to immediately cancel the episode and just hang out with him instead. I thought this movie was going to be your typical Christian propaganda film, but it ended up being a gorefest with a horribly sad ending.The cheerful and adventurous Lenny the Lion and the sweet, kind Lucy the Lamb embark on a journey to find The Greatest Thing Ever with their friends on Captain Snappy's pirate galleon, which had been converted into a spaceship. Greg the Gorilla accompanies the three, but is taken shortly by an assault by aliens. Not just any aliens, but assimilators who devour the flesh of their victims and use them as skin suits, much like The Thing from the John Carpenter movie. The movie takes a turn when Snappy shoots Lenny and Lucy into an escape pod shortly before blowing up the ship with him and Greg's body in it, ultimately cremating the two in a ball of fire. The lion and sheep tried consulting their version of the Biblical God, called The Boss in the show, for an answer.He never answered. Even when they landed safely, he never answered their call. Not even when they fell into a beehive and nearly got killed by an army of bees.
Lenny, having lost two of his friends in a freak accident involving aliens, taps into his feral feline instincts and tears a bunch of bees to pieces. Lucy watches all of this in horror, fearing she'd be next, since she and her family are herbivorous animals. I was shocked too because there was so gore. Blood and guts. It's almost as thought Butch had the artists reference pics from Bestgore. It was real, real bad. I nearly vomited.After killing ALL of the bees in the hive, Lenny falls to his knees and grovels mindlessly to The Boss. Lucy grabs Lenny and drags him out, leaving a trail of blood and honey in their path as they make their way back home. The movie, halfway through, cuts to a timeskip. Lucy, now an adult sheep wearing a blue Hillary Clinton styled pantsuit, is working in an office. Her boss, a gorilla resembling Greg, asks her about her missing friend. Lenny. Lenny went missing after they graduated from high school. Ten years ago. I was then treated to a montage of Lucy going back home, going to sleep, waking up, driving to work, going to church, and it sped through all of that until it hits a shot of Lucy standing in the old garden. In the middle of the garden is the tree, now dead and long decayed, and standing beneath its dead branches is a dark shadow. A tall, scruffy monster with bloodshot eyes. "Lenny", Lucy uttered with a somber breathe. She cried. She whimpered.She prayed. Lucy prayed and prayed. She kept praying, until the shadow that appeared to be Lenny disappeared. She looked around the garden, mouth shut and eyes filled with tears. Lucy looked up to see a rainbow shining upon her. It was The Boss."Lenny...is no more", he says before the shot of the rainbow of the sky transitions to a shot of what remained of Lenny beneath a rushing river. His bones having joined the rocks underneath. The camera then zoomed in on his skull before finally fading to black. The final shot.It ended just like that.
It was at that moment when I had decided to call my friend. The revival of our show, as I stated previously, had to be cancelled. It wasn't worth the Youtube ad revenue, however little we'd get. Instead, we went out to eat at a Five Guys. For a while, I had forgotten about the movie, let alone the fact I had still had a copy of it. The version that exists now is not the real one. That "movie" is merely five episodes stitched together. A compilation film, basically. It wasn't the surreal masterpiece I had sat infront of and watched for a whole hour. Butch Hartman's greatest work. The only people I've spoken to about it were my friends and family. They all thought I was crazy.Insane, even. While the film hadn't turned me toward religion or whatever, viewing it had changed my life more than any movie released by hollywood has in years. Sometimes, I look outside, staring at the grass.Whenever I'm out near a field. I think about Lenny. I think about Lucy. Then, I cry. A man should never cry over cartoons, and yet, I cry. I cry.I cry.
