Sonic/Mega Man writer Ian Flynn + artist Adam Bryce Thomas are about to launch their first book. Dunno if they're doing a Kickstarter or just sending it out into the wild, but it's been years and years since they first announced it.As such, I'm going to storytime their first, webcomic style attempt at Drogune, so people have a sense for what the book they're announcing tomorrow will be like.

I like the conceit of the picture book, but man it eats up a lot of pages to cover everything evenly when the point could be made in like, one page.Hope the new version does better with this.

The informant guy in this draft apparently got scrapped from the final book. I'm kinda glad; he doesn't add anything in the short term.
>>151106152>>151106169You can see Lissie's character design changing in real time on these pages, and Adam seemed to be struggling with drawing Wynd both bulky and short but also thin and athletic. Clearly trying to put most of the fat in her legs and hips but giving her ripped arms.
Final page of the webcomic version. It was clearly meant to be Lissie they were discovering. They've explained they cut this flashback out of the final version because it slowed the story down significantly and didn't actually add much besides a slow burn of establishing character dynamics.
They've done some illustrations for news posts and updates on the style since. Here's Wynd with a fat ass and Lissie halfway into the transition to her having a dark skin tone.
There were a couple different redesigns before they settled on the final versions.
Cringe.Ian should stick to Sonic.
Design sheet from the mid-reboot Wynd design.
One of Adam's attempts to figure out Lissie's design after the webcomic ended.
There was an attempt to reboot the book as a full color comic that didn't change much from the original draft. They posted ~6 pages on their Patreon in 2021, but that version was scrapped when they did a final redesign of the cast and a complete rewrite of the script to be breezier and more manageable.I don't think they ever released that one for free, and I don't think there's anywhere you can buy it, and there's so few patrons on the Patreon that I'd probably out myself somehow if I posted the whole thing, so instead have this one page that managed to slip out a few years back. This one's the reason I've got some faith in the project.
>>151106305I get it, the first draft is really rough in spots. They had Adam doing weekly pages and the script was way too drawn out. I think what they've got going now is way better.Anyway, their attempt right after the pandemic to pitch this to publishers bombed, so they did another redesign of the cast and tried to just carry the existing work through. I honestly think this is the best version of the crew. They hit a level of cartoony that leans into their character traits well. You get a good vibe from this sample, for example, of all three of these characters' personalities.
The cast was redesigned one last time in 2024 and... honestly, I think it was for the worse? Foren looks significantly younger with his new proportions, which gets rid of the middle aged dude vibe he was supposed to have. Wynd's hair is even more sharp and angular and looks like a bad DBZ wannabe cut. Lissie became so gangly and skinny that she actually doesn't look as much like a kid anymore, more like a small adult. Jobbun's lower body became little nubbins, which looks a bit weird? But Adam's composition and rendering skill improved immensely.
They previewed some pages for the final version recently. I still think the characters could be a bit rounder, and Foren and Lissie especially need a little more bulk, but the actual quality of the comic is way better than the early drafts.
Posting the finalized versions of their character designs.I really don't like Wynd's SSJ3 hair, but otherwise it's a great redesign.
Foren losing his wide shoulders really hurts his visual identity, especially when two other main characters are wearing his handmedown clothes, but adding hair and making his head bigger were good choices.
Jobbun's redesign is good aside from his little nubs. It's less quirky and more awkward.
Final version of Lissie. Not as anemic as other versions that I'm iffy on, but I do think these two>>151106330>>151106428got the "young but a bit gangly for her age" idea down better. The new hair is a huge upgrade.
One last shot of the best I think the crew looked.I'm really hoping things come together and the book does well. Adam's art is fantastic and the characters are really cute. I'm just worried that the lack of hype and audience building is gonna kill it in the cradle. Please read over this stuff and post with your thoughts.
>>151106713Ok here's my thoughts: Get a real job, Ian.
I remember this being storytimed before I went off to college. It's weird to think it's been that long already.Feel the same as back then. It's ok.
>>151106198A hell of a line to take out of context.
>>151107157Yeah. It's trying too hard to be a one-liner and almost reads like innuendo. What are your thoughts? This draft is from like 8 years ago.
>>151106713It's typical. Too slow. I like the girls, don't like the guys. World is boring.
>>151106713There's potential. Needs work.
Instead of reading this boring drag of a comic why don't you anons visit https://boards.plus4chan.org/sssr/t22106.html for some very based cringe kino sonic fan comics? At least you'll be entertained!
>>151106587I don't know, I think the hair makes it look too much of a faux-anime lean, makes him a bit more generic and furry adjacent.
>>151109912Yeah, I liked>>151106428this version. Don't care for it being a different color than his fur, but having just a bit of it looked better than full fuzz. The full on mop makes his head a bit too big, you're right.
>>151106305>>151106812>>151109509I was going to be a bit harsh but these comments just make me less inclined to be critical of it. Why are Sonic fans such shitheads?
>>151105502If Ian Flynn is such a great writer, why does drogune have virtually no audience?
>>151110284Because it comes out tomorrow, retard!Read the old version and tell me if you're one of those virtually non-existent fans or not!
>>151105600We got ourselves a daredevil over here
>>151111412Wynd's funny. The author said that if the AC breaks on the ship, she immediately starts stripping.
>>151107269I think Wynd's thighs are delicious. It was alright. I don't know if I'd pay money to read it.
>>151111916She's cute. I liked the fluffy hair more than the spiky hair, but whatever. The new version is condensing all this shit down to like, 15 pages, so I think it might be worth it? I'll let you know once it's in my hands. Worst case scenario it's a cool art book.
>>151110284Ian is not good at world building or starting from little material. He's also past his prime. He peaked back at Archie and got worse when that ended.
>>151112009I think he unironically worked his way through it by taking a fucking decade to get through the first volume of this book. He's rewritten this thing like four different times, but he's hit the point where he scaled 3,000 pages (his words, 10 volumes at 300 pages each) down to like, 640 (8 volumes at 80 pages each).I've got my problems with him too, but I'm giving the benefit of the doubt between the preview pages they've shown off, the script bits and general Q&A.
>>151112009>>151112099Oh, he also did some short stories on the side for the setting and they were actually pretty good. Not amazing, but good.
>>151110284Because it was a webcomic.
>>151112099>I'm giving the benefit of the doubtBetween this and IDW and that one comic he made for a furry game I'm more skeptical of whatever he puts out. They're not bad but they're not that interesting to me.
>>151113114Like I said, the stuff they showed off recently was promising.
>>151111610Hhhot.
>>151105502Bump
>>151105502What is this about?
>>151116593From the bits and pieces they've let slip over the years + the other short stories Ian's written in the setting + the lore pages he's written up:The story takes place in a version of space where space is radioactive poison and the planets are flat. (It's very clear he's going for a "actually it was one planet all along!" twist, it's not even a spoiler it's so apparent)The universal government is a bunch of Nazis who use the divine Providence of an ancient race to assert their authority. Wynd and Lissie are two of the last surviving members of that race, and they're not divine. They're exploring space on odd jobs trying to eke out a living, but end up coming into conflict with the law on episodic adventures where, assumedly, the government's claim to theocracy slowly unravels. One of the main antagonists is a fellow ancient one who drank the theocracy Kool Aid. He's cool and stoic, but also a big bitch baby loser. I personally think he's gonna throw a coup midway into the story, asserting his divinity and displacing the emperor, but knowing Ian he's just as likely to degrade into a pathetic failure over time.TL;DR, you ever play a Tales of game? It's that.
>>151115567If Ian wasn't self conscious about sex appeal she'd probably be in her underwear a lot.
>>151117186I'd be reading this comic if the lead girl had a nice ass.
So apparently you can just buy it starting next Monday. $10 for 80 pages.Really worried about the decision to just dump this out there and then fundraise spinoff books. The people who want to support the main book the most are given little in ways to support it and people in it for the artist won't back the Kickstarter.
>>151118106>Hip windows on the pantsSmart.

>the most common comment in the thread is protagonist sexo>when she looks like a femboyYou really can't stop people from being horny, huh
>>151116159
>>151105502The characters are all over the place. What's with western indie comics and being unable to design a cohesive or appealing characters?
>>151105624Lisie is truly a precious thing.
