Just watched this and I had heard it wasn't very good but I ended up being actually very impressed by how mad it was, because it wasn't just the usual harmless bad as much as it was genuinely fucking batshit scattershot bad.

I get that it is not an easy task to make a movie out of a game series that is so light on any form of narrative like Mario but what the fuck was going on here? They act like they're setting up some kind of arc about self-worth going on but then it swerves into Mario wanting to prove himself to his dad (despite his family giving so little of a shit about him that no one minds that he and Luigi disappeared for 3 days??) and neither variations of this plot line ever get developed outside of a couple of characters reminding us Mario is small during quips.

The movie acts like they need a monkey army to fight Bowser but said army was apparently not really necessary since Princess Peach of all people can hold on an entire room of Bowser's minions by herself, a situation she only found herself in because she didn't want Bowser to hurt... a specific single Toad that despite wanting to protect she allowed to tag along with her.

Both Peach and Bowser are obsessed with Mario instantly despite just meeting him, with this bogus excuse that Peach is happy to see another human being but it makes you wonder how the fuck she even knows what a human being is if she never saw one before? What is even the purpose of Mario in this movie? How are we supposed to care about his and Luigi's bond that totally matters except not and the movie knows it because it tried to beg us to care by adding that random "you guys... look how DEEP their brotherly love is cuz once when they were babies Mario beat up a 2nd grader to save Luigi" flashback?

I could keep going on and on, the movie is actually interesting in how utter shit it is, it's almost as crazy as the old 90s live action film was. Is this Nintendo's infiltered vision for these characters? Wild

And this is why I want AI to take over movies, would do a better job already

Oh fuck you Luigi

The movie sucked dick but I think it's interesting that it exists as some kind of meta commentary on how consoomers engage with stuff. For a while you'd get completely raped by folks if you called it bad or boring and yet you had people that usually shit on Illumination's slop dickriding it hard despite it being one of their worst movies. It just proves that brand loyalty trumps everything else for millenial geeks.

It wasn't the worst it could have been, but it's not something I would ever go out of my way to rewatch. It was faithful, but too sterile. This would have worked better if it was going for the tone of the Mario and Luigi games instead and that would have worked better for Illumination's writing with the slapstick gags, sometimes crude humor, and satirical moments. Mainline Mario is about gameplay and the stories rarely have anything interesting. Anyone who has been in the Mario fandom for awhile will also realize this was probably made to be as boring as possible on purpose when seeing the concept art and seeing that Toadsworth was planned and cut.

it's a fucking theme park ride movie. trash garbage that only impresses dumb kids just like the minecraft movie. there's nothing original to be done with Mario other than going off a checklist of references, that's why critics and anyone with a functioning brain savaged this movie. of course the tendies loved it because muh childhood and shit taste..

You're that kind of person who is just smart enough to really get into some incredibly retarded statements. Like, the movie isn't great, but the shit you're blathering on about has nothing to do with it.

So the target audience. Oh wait you weren't really looking to get anything out of this as an adult were you?

>target audience cope
old videogames like Super Mario Bros are still enjoyable as an adult. there's no reason for movies to be mindless trash unless that was the goal from the beginning.
>>
i was entirely unsurprised by how shit this movie was but seeing so many people glazing it was just sad. nintendo adults are worse than disney adults

At first I was sad that I'm not able to articulate an analysis of a movie like that, but on second thought, I can easily just turn my brain off and enjoy the movie for what it is, a reference train with pretty colors.
I think I prefer being this way, it's more comfy

Are you really trying to argue that a Mario movie needs to be high cinema?
>>
>>151112662
I'd go ahead and say the movie isn't merely "not great" as much as it was total nonsensical shit, but it's nonsensical and shit to a level that is actually genuinely interesting because it makes it look like the japanese big wigs are somehow even more bonkers than the Minions people they had on a leash. Like I said, this isn't even 1/12 of the problems in this movie, it falls apart massively as soon as he meets a mushroom man in an absurd world populated by colorful geometrical monstrosities and he reacts to this madness only barely and entirely thru overplayed quips gruesomely delivered by a bored sounding Chris Pratt.

I can see how it must be fun to people who grew up on all of those games and is having the opportunity to see all those things shown on a big screen with shiny CGI, I'm not surprised it made good money, but I am surprised to finally see it because there were lots of folks I hold in high regard praising it and it's a bit absurd now. I feel like any stance more positive than "It was crap but I had fun" is being absurdly charitable.

NTA but asking for a movie to not be utter disposable shit isn't asking for high cinema. I know we are all tired of the autistic people who bring up "kids deserve better!!" as some kind of mantra that actually means "all media aimed at kids must also appeal to me" but this film feels flimsy beyond the age barrier. Besides the amount of nostalgia references makes me believe they weren't aiming purely at the new gen of kids either.

It's because the bar for "Good Mario movie" was set super low thanks to the dogshit live-action movie that a safe micromanaged movie by the most executive cucked animation studio in the industry was largely welcomed with open arms.
