Rick & Morty's problem is that it's both an edgy sci-fi adult comedy AND a standard family sitcom. The latter really drags back its potential and limits what can be done with the main cast, especially when it comes to jokes. In contrast, Futurama and Smiling Friends and Grimsburg THRIVE as workplace sitcoms where no one's related and there isn't a snot-nosed brat taking up so much space. Anything goes! An adult cartoon centered on kid protagonists is always a risk, and South Park is one of the few to have actually made it work. Rick & Morty? Just look at how they abandoned the high school.
