So much more could be done with the superhero genre.
>>151121343From which comic is this? Looks hyper-detailed.
>>151121721Cankor by Matthew Allison
>>151121343That's why Kurt Busiek wrote Astro City
Oh neat, Cankor. I have a collection and some kind of ashcan single. Great art and it didntvread as subversive or deconstructive. Just a bit more avant-garde.
>>151121753Thanks. Never heard of this.
I got da reference (Frank Miller). I'm reading through it right now. Pretty trippy stuff. Seems very surreal. Somewhat scattered though so it feels like this is a collection of random stories this guy made of his OC over the years.
>>151121799That came out in the 90s.
>>151121343Yeah.
>>151121343While I like this type of comic, I'd also like a cape story that plays it straight but does EVERYTHING right. Almost everything I've read in the genre is lacking something when it isn't trying to be different.
>>151123215And it hasn't been topped yet.
>>151124648It's not about topping, homo. Also, it's that good.
>>151121343The superhero genre is already just Crime Genre++You know, DC stands for "Detective Comics"
>>151125167It's an overlap of crime, science fiction, and action. Most other genres have also been dabbled in since it started.
>>151125115*NOT that goodWhat a failure.
>>151121343>superpowered individuals that are so strong they’d destroy the world if they fought each other>go to extreme lengths to avoid fighting so the non-powered schmucks get to keep living>last and only major conflict had some slight collateral damage all of EuropeMore people need to read this. Art is good too. Even individual issues feel tense, and the cliffhangers keep you hooked month after month. (Also if the book doesn’t sell there won’t be any more)
>>151126893Is this actually good, I have immense skepticism over some modern comics
>>151126893>Art is good too.And it's all bullshit.
>>151126935I was hooked from the first issue. It feels like a real deconstruction of superheroes that isn’t just “these characters curse and kill people”. There is profanity, and people die, but it’s not the focus of the book. I’d give it the first three issues, and if it’s not your thing that’s fine.
>>151126893This art is atrocious. That alone is enough to deter me.
>>151121343We've only scraped the tip of the iceberg with what could be done. Too bad the industry is in too much shambles for comics to be a worthwhile endeavor.
>>151126893Might read it.
>>151126893I hated the characters and dropped it for that reason, but the art is good
>>151127802i have "v for vendetta" and "watchmen"i want to read "hellboy" but idk where to start and based off of the covers "promethea" and "the filth" look interesting
>>151121343i now know this exists
SHAKARA!
>>151121343I don't think there is actually.
>>151128905WRONG!
>>151121343like? You don't even know what you want, it's just constant bitching and noise.
>>151129015>bitching and noiseLiterally your post.
>>151128591Promethea is one of my favorite comics, but honestly if you have no background in occultism and esoteric spirituality, you could find it obtuse and confusing. It leans hard into all of that stuff. The Filth is just amazing. It is Morrison going full weird, and there's really no background that can prepare you for it. You just have to pay close attention. It is Morrison's best work in my view. I read it once a year. Check it out.

>>151129082You gotta hand it to Moore for doing his research. I remember seeing this part and being surprised at the reference to the syncretism between Greek and Egyptian gods.
>>151127151>deconstructionPass. I'm done with that word. Everything been deconstructed so much that no one even remembers what they're deconstructing.
>>151129220It's a term that has almost never applied. A deconstruction of something is a type of analysis, which is not something done easily within a fictional narrative. Most things labeled as "deconstruction" are merely revisionist stories.
>>151129177You are right. I do appreciate it, but it also means some of his works can be tedious to get through as you have to parse references as you read. But hey, that is occultism for you.I recently read Providence for the first time. It was honestly enthralling, and I even read all of those journal entries at the end of each chapter. Even though that made it a slog, it is such a good story that it kept me reading. I only have a cursory knowledge of the life of HP Lovecraft, but I got what he was putting down. He researched the man's entire life and career as well as the lives of his contemporaries, and made up this whole conspiracy story and used it as a way to pen an allegorical commentary about his own writing career. Moore's a keen one.
>>151128767Is that essentially a superhero comic?
>>151128767Only time I ever opened this book was to find that one scene of the bald chick with a fat ass.
>>151121343
>>151129660The stars did not align for this run.
>>151127360This nigga blind
>>151126893had never heard of this before, actually pretty cool. only just realized that it's the same guy who wrote Die
>>151129928Nah, you're just gay.
>>151121343I won’t disagree with you anon. Cape comics could be more, and in some ways, they were heading in that direction the 80’s but then just.. stopped. Oh, what I’d give to have something mature and well-written and paced be published. Everything these days are just retreads where “#*%*!” Is seen as mature writing. Genres returning would be nice too. Just something
