It also keeps kids out of genuine more "adult" themes (sometimes just themes parents don't want to explain to young kids), like sex, violence, nudity, genuine cursing, suicide, evil, grey morality, etc. Basically stop exposing kids 5+ to shit, poop, and fart jokes, genuinely scold during that potty training phase (it's okay for them to feel bad, look sad, or cry on occasion when you scold them. That's actually the goal), and then they won't find it funny. But some parents want them to find it funny to keep them out of adult content. I don't think kids actually like shit jokes I just think they're conditioned to.
