Tell me what it's like working at a comic book shop or else I'll threaten you.

Harder than it looks. You really have to sell the shit as not a single thing in those stores is needed to live, very expensive and usually not worth the money.
>>
>>151130714
you get no healthcare or dental care but you can stand all day behind the cash register.
>>
I've never done it. But I think to make it selling comic books in RL you would have to be a nerd but still outspoken and somewhat social, like comic book guy.
>>
You make most of your money selling gay little plastic army men to autistic adults
>>
>>151130714
People try to sell you their trash and recycling whether or not you’re buying
>>
>>151130714
no dice idiot you already threatened me
>>
>>151130714
Worked at one in the U-District in Seattle. No different than any other retail job. No one freaked out when a girl came in. It was mostly a hot chick that was with a nerd boyfriend that looked bored. We had a few that had boxes. A guy tried to sell us a VHS of Trial of the Incredible Hulk. Since we didn’t buy stuff he just gave it to me. Halloween most of us dressed up. This one coworker was Jean Grey from Ultimate X-Men. That’s all I remember off the top of my head. If this thread is still up, I will think of other stuff that happened.
>>
>>151130714
As with any job, I'm sure it has its ups and downs.
>>
>>151131814
Not ALL of us are autistic...
>>
>>151134164
what are the ups of working as a septic tank maintenance man? or working as a male escort?
>>
>>151135302
>septic tank maintenance man
probably have a scat fetish
>male escort
get laid probably gay
>>
>>151135302
>septic tank maintenance man
Good money, don't have to work too many hours
>male escort
Sex, also good money depending on the venue.
Chairman Mao said that all labor is glorious, anon.
>>
>>151135302
>septic tank maintenance man

unless people stop shitting, you literally have infinite job security.
>>
>>151135780
This. Same for diaper salesmen.

>Tell me what it's like working at a comic book shop or else I'll threaten you
A statement that is a threat in and of itself?

I run one.
The guy who owns it is an old guy with way too much money who mostly wants a discount on omnibuses and a place to store all his crap where his wife won't bitch.
I do all the ordering and day to day shit, pay isn't great but its consistent and still better than most retail shit because I've done it awhile and I'm good at it.
Some of the regulars are cool. A lot more of them are internet fuckboys looking for pokemon cards or whichever comic issue is trending on Twitter or whatever (they don't know the name)
Like >>151131814 said the majority of money we make is selling warhammer dudes on the internet, which pays for me to spend the rest of the day going through long boxes of old shit.

i didn't work in one, but one of my best friends did. the guy he worked for was a cheapskate who didn't pay him what he should have been paid and instead got reduced prices on stuff in the store. this same owner was a hoarder. my friend at the time helped organize it so it was a doom pile, and it was still too much volume of stuff for a small hole in the wall store. the owner would not reduce the prices of action figs from the 90s that no one was going to ever fucking buy, and instead increased the prices on things that no one was buying. his deal was to buy random shit and hope that some rando in another country like brazil would order it online after it had appreciated in value. this only worked some of the time. both the owner passed away and a few years ago so did my friend.

the LCS i go to now seems really chill. even though i don't work there is seems like a nice place. it's even smaller than the other place i was talking about but the guy that runs it keeps it clean, doesn't have as much junk (he keeps it to ONLY comics) and he's been doing it for years. when he first started he watched is toddler son while his wife was at work. went up there the other day and that kid who is like 10 years old now was walking in from school from down the street and it made me feel old.

*so it was NOT a doom pile*
>>
>>151130714
Anon, the people on /co/ who have been to one is already slim as fuck, let alone anyone who's actually worked there.

This. Many Springfield landmarks are products of a bygone era that were more commonplace back in the '80s and early '90s.

I'm friends with the owners/workers, and sometimes help out with, at a comic store. Believe it or not, contrary to the plastic/statue people in this thread, they make good money on books. The trick is knowing the business and not treating it strictly like a hobby. We get constant new inventory for people to sift through, have pull list practices, run card events, etc. I could go into more detail if people have questions but I can tell you a few things
>Lemire fans usually drop shit after 3 issues
>Black character books like Static, Black Lightning, and Mister Terrific don't sell.
>Marvel is dangerously close to 90s level of sales/bankruptcy
Also while we do have manga its very little. We have decent enough comic inventory to do well. Have a partnership with a well known auction house too

I spoke with my LCBS owner, he loves his job. Says he gets to read and talk about comics all day, and he loves to do it.
They do operate a small business, so plenty of paper work and annoyances. No real job security.
But he liked it.
