There were several waves of Jewish immigration into Palestine before the 1930's, with the earliest one explicitly inspired by Zionist ideology starting in the 1880's. Arab opposition to Jewish settlement also started earlier than that, with paramilitary groups forming on both sides as early as the 1900's. Still, things were mostly peaceful until the end of WWI and the establishment of British Palestine. This move pissed both Arabs and Jews off majorly, as both had expected the British to grant them their own state only to end up as a colony in all but name. The newer waves of immigration during this period were especially large, caused by political instability in Eastern Europe, and had a much stronger ideological bent then most of the previous ones (socialism in particular being a very strong current), leading to a lot of conflict in the region. Britbongs tried to control the situation by placing restrictions on Jewish immigration, but it didn't do much to ease tensions, and both Arabs and Jews would launch rebellions and insurgencies to try to shake off the British and establish their own ethno-state. It wasn't until 1948 with the end of Britsh rule and the Palestinian civil war that followed that the Jews would succeed, at which point they were so radicalized that they didn't have much issue with kicking the Arabs out by force. You probably already know most of the rest of the story.
