We need more superhero comics like these.
What else falls under this category of superhero comics that try to take the genre to new places?
>>
>>151135026
Oh you mean comics done by people embarrassed to be working in comics?
>>
>>151135404
These are essentially all people that pursued a career in comics because they loved the medium. It wasn't just a day job, it didn't just pay the bills.
They made comics like these because they wanted to see this medium flourish.
>>
nigga again? we just had this thread and someone dropped a cbz of cankor

We didn't get into the topic almost at all. People were distracted by Cankor and that concurrent East vs West thread.

>East vs West thread
The ones that reply to those threads don't participate in proper comic discussion, OP.
>>
>>151135542
Nah, pretentious twats making pretentious crap for pretentious fags. We've long established these are the kind of comics made by people embarrassed to be working in comics.
>>
>>151135880
Even Hellboy?
>>
>>151135974
Hellboy is dope. Hellboy is not pretentious.
>>
>>151135880
Not sure who "we" is, but you're way off base. These are writers that dislike the term "graphic novels", stating they're no more than comic books.
>>151135984
None of them are pretentious.

That's some pretty strong hatred you have against comics.
>>
>>151136169
I love comics. I only hate pretentious fuckwits.
>>
>>151136368
>I love comics.
Absolutely not. You might love IPs, but not the medium of comics.

>DEY WUZ EMBAWASSED!
You're a fucking idiot who just parrots what Youtube grifters say. Polly want a fuckin' cracker, faggot?

Planetary fits. Pulp archeologist superheroes.

>>151135026
>>151136945
Other Morrison comics as well, such as Arkham Asylum (superhero psychological horror), Zenith (superhero Lovecraftian horror), Flex Mentallo, Seven Soldiers, and The Multiversity (all metafictional superhero stories).
>>
>>151135026
Unfortunately people don't really make books like these anymore and those who do normally don't know how to do it like Tom King. I have heard 20th Century Men is very good though.
>>
>>151137733
Tom King does not do comics "like these". Fuck outta here.
>>
>>151137760
You misread what I was saying. I was saying he tries to but fails. He tries to emulate these kinds of books all the time, especially Alan Moore's stuff but it just doesn't land
>>
>>151137760
>>151137775
King certainly dresses his comics up this way, but he does the absolute bare minimum for substance. He seems to pick a character or property he feels he might be able to shape into an idea he already has, and maps out a story with a certain amount of issues (even if he only has content for much less).
I don't detect much passion for the medium like I do for most of the ones in the OP.
>>
>>151137893
I kind of hope he ends up liking movies and TV so much that he moves away from comics.
>>
>>151135404
If that's what it takes to get good shit
>>
>>151137775
He does not try. He puts some window dressing to seem like he's referencing Moore but in his own words he was a Marvel zombie that didn't read any Vertigo or indies. He'll maybe add some little gimmicks in to distract you from the fact that his actual stories are straight superhero comics with very average superhero style brawls and monologues but he subverts some common elements found in the "genre" and even then he's not the first or only guy in comics to for example make all the males incompetent and the females hyper-competent.
>>
>>151137937
He writes Eisnerbait
>>
>>151135026
I'd not call Hellboy a superhero comic.
>>
>>151137951
"Eisnerbait" is not an actual thing. Didn't Tom Taylor win one? And didn't King split it with some trashfire like Kelly Thompson one year? Much like it is with these awards in all mediums, the judges just vote for their friends, and because this industry is so full of cronyism it's worse. The only thing he does is try to convince people that he's depressed because he knows all the revered philosophers and thinkers in history were depressed so the dimwit thinks he'll come off as deep if he tackles things like depression and shit but he has 0 idea on how to handle such topics because he's just a dumb manchild.
>>
>>151137972
It's the most superhero one in that image.

>>151137932

>>
>>151138000
I don't really understand why King gets the praise he does, is it because people read so few comics that it seems revolutionary to them?
>>
>>151138026
I think it's a combination of new, uninitiated readers and older, desperate readers.
>>
>>151138026
Who doesn't get praised these days? People still insist Bendis is good (even though he never was), Tom Taylor is acclaimed and sells. Mark Waid is considered a legend. Jurgens is considered a legend. BKV is considered a genius and Saga was praised like it was one of the masterpiece of the medium, Monstress is acclaimed, Ewing is seen as a genius, Hickman keeps fucking up every ending ever and he's still revered.
>>
>>151138026
King probably gets the most hate out of the current generation of writers. But to answer your question, some fall for his gimmicks and his depressed ptsd complicated man persona so they think he's intelligent.
>>
>>151138061
Ennis. For some reason everyone online turned on him even though for decades he was considered one of the greats. I'd love a comic landscape where King was considered a hack and Ennis was respected again
>>
>>151138061
And a bunch of the former writers who did it better are shat upon or overlooked.
It's detestable how the comic industry hype machine works.
>>
>>151138080
Ennis was always hit and miss and always had his haters. Maybe he gets more hate nowadays from fans online but it's mostly because older fans simply don't interact much with the dimwits that take up a lot of discourse these days, in short, people got tired of defending Ennis with arguments from people that gobble up the works of Waid or Bendis. You can see it on /co/, a lot of posters don't have the energy to comment or even visit these days.
>>
>>151138121
A lot of the people who hate him now either call him racist, call him an edgelord because they saw that one video essay about The Boys comic vs the show, or call him an edgelord because they only bothered to read summaries of The Boys and Crossed
>>
>>151138145
I don't care what idiots say, especially semi-literate dumbasses that can't articulate an argument and just use stupid non words like "edgelord". I will say that from the very little of The Boys that I read it's a piece of shit. Preacher on the other hand is great and better than the majority of those people you speak of's favorite comics.
>>
>>151138012
Batman?
>>
>>151138223
The Boys isn't that horrible. It's not good, but not horrible.
>>
>>151138784
people shit on the boys too much, its meant to be shitty and edgy and it doesnt hide that. i dont know why people think they have some hot take by saying its shitty and edgy.
>>
>>151138806
Grant Morrison of all people praised it.
>>

Born Again, Year One and Astro City are just straight superhero comics, it's just that they're good, well, the first two anyway.
>>
>>151142502
It has art by Mike Allred. Be warned, he is not a good writer.
>>
>>151142523
He's not that bad. His dialogue is fun. Can't say that for most cape writers.
>>
>>151142507
No, they're not exactly straight. Mazzucchelli brings in another level of art built on everything that came before.
Astro City may be a tad redundant, since it's special element is basically doing what Miller did in those two comics with Ben Urich and Jim Gordon.
>>
>>151142906
They're straight as fuck, bro.
>>
Watchmen and TDKR are different, they insert you in a grey world that even ours can't accept.
Like, troons laugh at lolbertarian saying notquestion is a hero, but they ignore how Silk Spectre spend most of the story seething at people don't giving a fuck about and hiding the comedian's rape but in the end she does the same, she hide and ignore the truth of the kill of millions of mothers(and rorschach change his opinion of the moral lapse for this action).
The others works after that try to hard to be watchmen or TDKR without what made those world appealing, they want cool worlds with villains.
