We don't touch too much on Japan in the /coc/ setting because manga/anime has already done anything you can think of with those islands.Maybe an old shrine with a squatter living in it who prays to the spirit there, but it's not a protector spirit but a sealed yokai. One fragment of a supremely powerful demon who was fractured into hundreds of pieces and each individually sealed. The fragment sealed in the shrine has lost most of its identity but remembers it should be something more. The squatter is one of those disillusioned with society types who got used, abused, and spat out by the mega corps who control everything these days.The empty space in the squatter's soul is able to accommodate the demon and they reach an accord almost as soon as they finally make contact, like filling in the broken pieces of each other.Once they're one, the demon/yokai can manifest as a kimono that changes shape, like the long sleeves becoming claws or the tassels or bands becoming tails. Like wearing the demon as an oversized onesie.Now someone can tell me which obscure manga has already done something like this.
