Like 500 years ago, or 1000 years ago, or 2000 years ago, there were more nations in the world, more kingdoms and republics, but over time stronger regimes have prevailed over weaker ones and we have gotten consolidated nations in the two major landmasses: the Earth Kingdom as a confederation of kingdoms under the high kingship of the Earth King, the Fire Nation as an absolute monarchy with the Fire Lord as its supreme ruler.It makes me think that, contra this being a show set in "the good old days," we are actually relatively late in the timeline of the world, and that centuries or millennia before ATLA takes place, there were lots of nations in the world, and it took us time, lots of time, to get to "the four nations" as we know them in the show.It's almost like our world, basically. There used to be way more nations and states than there are, but things have been consolidated, and even individual sovereignties have been ceded to grander institutions like the European Union and the United Nations.And yet, even now, that vision of a more united world, in our world, is breaking apart, and people are demanding sovereignty in their immediate spheres again. You could see it happening in the Avatar world too, most pointedly with the breakup of the Earth Kingdom. You could also start to maybe see the Water Tribes moving north/south into the more temperate regions of the world, expanding beyond their polar bases as their populations really started to grow in peacetime.You could absolutely scramble Avatar's map if you wanted, post-war.
