Kuvira literally did nothing wrong
>Earth Kingdom is in chaos after Season 3
>Nobody in any power position gives a fuck about doing anything
>Kuvira is the only person who decided to unite the nation under a leadership again, traveling for 3 years to help everyone
>At the end of those 3 years the other nations who didn't do SHIT to help you suddenly demand you step down and allow a shitty whiny brat to rule on your place

Frankly they could have dragged out the season more and have her fight more earth kingdom warlords.
>>
>>151321693
They had good points but their personal motivations were bad
Zaheer is probably the most agreeable villain
>>
>>151321693
Zaheer probably had the best point but also the dumbest actual plan. Kuvira was 100% justified since Aang had failed to force the fire nation to surrender the lands they had stolen from them.
>>
>>151320197
they should've made her mom, Suyin's sister or whatever, the main villain. Nasty bitch, hated her
>>
All she had to do was not attack Republic City (which had not been a part of the earth kingdom for like 200 years)
>>
>>151321827
Kiyoshi was right when she said “Only justice will bring peace.” Establishing Republic City was a horrible idea. It makes adult Aang seem weak and overly obsessed with promoting globohomo shit.
>>
>>151321693
The equalists's conflict was poorly set up but Amon's plan wasn't exactly the best and he was a fake anyways. No comment on the black kite nigga, Zaheer had a retarded plan and Kuvira was pretty justified.

yeah and that's why added the forced labor shit and her turning a fantastic source of energy into a weapon.
>>
>>151321827
It was rightful Earth Kingdom clay. Kuvira was not leaving it to globohomo interests.
>>
>>151321856
The point of Republic City is that the region had earth and fire benders integrated with one another and even had mixed families and there was no way to go 'fire benders go to the fire nation' without breaking up said families.
>>

You don’t need to kick the benders out just give the clay back to the earth kingdom. If the firebenders are integrated then they shouldn’t cause any problems.

>Hey maybe the villain has a point- oh my God they went too far, better stop them!
TLoK revels in the neoliberal status quo reset:
>Maybe non-benders are worse off- EVIL BLOOD BENDER.
>Maybe the spirits are badly treated- DARK AVATAR.
>Maybe these archaic regimes- MURDER, ANARCHY.
>Maybe stability is worth- GIANT MECH, GERMAN ARMY HELMETS, DO YOU GET IT?? DO YOU??
This is the writing of:
>We want to imply depth but we still need an excuse for the hero to fight the bad guy at the end.
So of course the bad guy has to go too far and the status quo has to win out. In season one the council of Republic City get non-bender representatives at the end, implying all the problems were solved by maintaining the system so the whole conflict was pointless.

The reason for that was because said territories told the earth kingdom to fuck off and immediately tried to rejoin the Fire Nation repeatedly, they only weren't allowed to because Kuei threw a tantrum and Aang was too much of a spineless fuck to tell him to suck dick and deal with it., but he also couldn't force them to rejoin the Earth Kingdom without basically starting another war, so the Republic was an unhappy compromise that nobody liked.

Almost as if villainy is defined by actions rather than intent. Also the entire Republic government saw a massive change due to the events of S1. At the start of S1 it was a mutually governed autonomous exclave run by appointed representatives of five different nations, at the start of S2 it's a sovereign nation with a self-determined government. The status quo very much did not win out.

>as the arc moves on the audience and characters start to notice half the supposed "warlords" aren't actually doing anything bad and Kuvira is quick to ally with people she vehemently denounced prior
The problem with Kuvira is that they didn't plant the seeds of doubt early, so when they revealed forced labor camps and imperialistic aims it came off as an asspull.

The funniest part about Kuvira being a designated villain is that they spend a comical amount of time telling you just how shitty of a leader Prince Wu would actually make. The last monarch was a tyrant and the new one is a selfish nepo baby. So it feels like there's no reason to root against Kuvira until they tack on something about prison camps you never actually see and her deciding to go crazy for nukes for some reason.
>>
>>151324906
>The status quo very much did not win out.
These changes were not so much explored as just sort of happened and didn't really have much to say about the conflicts. So the point still stands. It was a change in name only.

>The problem with Kuvira is that they didn't plant the seeds of doubt early, so when they revealed forced labor camps and imperialistic aims it came off as an asspull.
And that issue pretty much follows what my post said about the nature of the writing:
>We want to imply depth but we still need an excuse for the hero to fight the bad guy at the end.
>So of course the bad guy has to go too far
>>
>>151324854
Kuvira doesn't wear an outfit that exposes her shoulders and muscular arms, so she can't be as hot as Korra
>>
>>151324906
>They should have given Kuvira a kid and have the kid directly compare to Wu in behavior and mentality to subtextually sell the notion that Kuvira is just a monarchist with hipster labelling.

They didn't have to. Wu vibed with the Badger Moles (the original Earthbenders) and led who he did to safety. If it weren't for his electing to abdicate, that would be taken as divine proof of his place to be the Earth King.

LoK proves that the Avatar is fundamentally a reactionary force. Zaheer did nothing wrong when he planned to end the Avatar cycle; it was holding humanity in a Dark Age forever. There’s no accident that the flowering of technology and modern thought only happens after a 100 year absence of the Cycle followed by the only Avatar since Wan who was never completely brainwashed by the bending Elite

>LoK proves that the Avatar is fundamentally a reactionary force.
TLoK proves they are bad writers. Korra SHOULD have been a Republic City street urchin who becomes the Avatar, the stuffy White Lotus want her to maintain the "balance" but she seeks to change society because she came from the streets and knows hardship. Every single theme, equality, spirits, anarchy, order, could have explored this. Korra as the Avatar of Change inspires Zaheer but then sees the results and doubts herself? Wow, that would have been interesting! The theme should have been change. Instead the philosophy of balance the show puts forward is, like you say, a reactionary force, like 19th century Europeans shitting out monarchs to stop the spread of republics. It has nothing to say.

Why doesn’t Kuvira let Wu be king while she runs everything as his hand?
>>
>>151320197
Suyin is a bitch that didn't deserve what she got along in having never been punished for what she did and Lin's flip-flop heel turn was poorly done when no she was right. Lin was right about Suyin. I don't like that the creators just let Suyin get away scot-free and given Suyin doesn't take charge for the Earth Kingdom in disarray as that could have been a way for her to atone, but nah not my problem, especially coming from the one who said kings are outdated, helps in putting another king for the throne with Wu anyway.
>>
>>151327303
>Korra SHOULD have been a Republic City street urchin
I mean... no? Having her be born there defies the Avatar Cycle. Aang was an Air Nomad, so Korra had to be born to the Water Tribes. Bad writers or not, her origins were done correctly.
>>
>>151327469
>born there defies the Avatar Cycle.
I don't think the Avatar cycle is that she had to be born in the Water Tribes just that her parents had to be ethnically from the Water Tribes.
>>
>>151327469
>Having her be born there defies the Avatar Cycle
No it doesn't... Did you forget that Republic City had people from ALL the different nations and the council that ran it had representatives from the different nations too? Who is to say a Water Tribe sailor didn't live there for a time? She'd still be Water Tribe descent.

Republic City in the show is bland and needed culture and personality and connecting the Avatar to it would be a good way to do that. And it would connect to the themes better. So it doesn't break the cycle at all.

>>
>>151327525
>Did you forget that Republic City had people from ALL the different nations
Irrelevant. The Water Tribes was next on the Avatar Cycle. It's as simple as that.
>She'd still be Water Tribe descent.
Which therein would not make her from the Water Tribes and thus would be in defiance of the Avatar Cycle. The next Avatar after Air has to come from where Waterbenders come from. And while some Waterbenders are from the United Republic (why everyone thinks it's just Republic City is beyond me. Republic City was just it's capital there was much more to it than just that) Waterbenders overall come from the Watertribes. Just Earthbenders come from the Earth Kingdom, Firebenders from the Fire Nation and Airbenders from the Air Temples. Raava's always gonna steer the cycle to keep it in that pattern.
>>
>>151327426
I guess because that wasn't the deal they promised her? She was a random soldier from a neighboring isolated kingdom, not a would-be advisor or politician.
>>
>>151327681
>Irrelevant
Are you describing your post? You're making shit up. It's never specified to be location dependent, neither is it dependent on who counts as Water Tribe or not. There is nothing wrong with someone of Water Tribe descent becoming the Avatar.
>Raava's always gonna steer the cycle to keep it in that pattern.
Firstly, Raava and that lore was shit. Secondly, I could argue the same thing, that Raava would steer the cycle towards some Water Tribe born in Republic City because it is the centre of new threats and the new status quo. Thematically it would work and fit the story/themes very well. Lore wise it contradicts nothing either. And it could make the city more interesting.

So you were just plain wrong when you claim it broke the cycle, so then you move the goal posts, just talking statistics about where someone should be born. But statistics don't matter compared to story considerations. None of this says anything about the ideas or following the themes and how it could add an interesting dimension to things.
>>
>>151327681
>Just Earthbenders come from the Earth Kingdom, Firebenders from the Fire Nation
Apart from the former Fire Nation colonies... Which were a plot point in TLA and the comic continuations... You know because the world had changed...
>>
>>151327809
This.
>>
>>151320197
That's why they made her do concentration camps and target cities that were already peaceful
>>
>>151320197
Her only mistake was in trying to consolidate power during a time meant to reflect the interwar period following ww1 (1918-1939). A time in which the royal heads of states were neutered in their power and influence. During this decline of monarchies, many looking to seize power were viewed as dictators with no divine or familial authority to rule. Thus, Kuvira is "literally Hitler" because she is literally Hitler.
>>
>>151327788
>so then you move the goal posts
There's no goal posting. Fire, Air, Water, Earth. That's the cycle. Every Avatar will come from the places where the corresponding benders come from in that order. That's how it goes. That symbolism will always be how it goes. Having an Avatar come from where that pattern does not correspond defies that thematic symbolism, and the United Republic definitely does not fall within that symbolism. Ergo an Avatar could never come from there. It's that simple.
>>
>>151323037

>>
>>151329168

>>
>>151329290
I mean in all fairness Kuvira has other similarities to Hitler. The Third Reich didn't have the money, nor the manpower to sustain itself out of wartime. It only existed through conquest. We see this happen in the show kind of when she defeats the group of bandits then forces them into slavery/conscription.
>>
>>151320197
She can't just come in, do some charity and then expect everyone to do as she says not just in her nation but making herself the leader of the entire world, as soon as they declined she instantly dropped her facade and tried to take it by force no matter who's affected or even killed in the process, she's a fascist authoritarian who somehow becomes worse than the fire nation.
>>
>>151328245
>from the places
It's never stated it has to be a place and not just someone born of that group. It does not break the pattern of symbolism either. You come across as autistic no fun or discussion allowed police.
>and the United Republic definitely does not fall within that symbolism
So if the nations of the world change in anyway then according to to you there is no more Avatar. Because it has to be from a place and nation, not simply someone of that descent.
>>
>>151320197
Nah Zaheer was right. That's why the world eventually turns to shit regardless of anything. She was trying to be a Horus with an already dead emperor on the throne.
>>
>>151328535
Republic City is the bandaid being ripped, huge megacultures based on bending traditions were cripplingly vulnerable to industrialized military. Sending everyone back home to LARP as the world 150 years prior is just a good way to have fifth columns in every corner.

Why would they want to? The Earth Kingdom doesn't even seem to be ruled by earth leadership. It seems more a bunch of independants with the Earth King being 'first among equals' thing for ruling Ba Sing Se. They've just temporarily banded together to fight off the fire nation.

So what? Just hand themselves over to some rando Earth noble? Why when the Fire Nation seems to not just be the more advanced nation in tech but also socially. At least it seems more egalitarian. Women get equal treatment and they're willing to employ other benders (Dai Li) whereas you cannot imagine the opposite happening. They also have that odd obsession with *imprisoning* people - even benders - instead of killing them (which comes across as some sort of odd cultural taboo that Ozai wasn't able to break). You don't see no prisoners in the Earth or Water nations.

Obviously the war is bad, but it's hard to argue that life for the average earth peasant would be any different if the fire nation were just suddenly in charge.

The actual flaws of the fire nation seem to be a) the war going on for too long has fucked their society over and the leadership was insane. But first is the same for the EK, and the EK leaders we see were barely better.
Post ATLA the Fire Nation is ruled by Zuko, heroic friend of the Avatar. So why would they want to go to being serfs under EK rule and risk half the colonials being murdered for having fire nation blood? When they know Zuko is best friends with the Avatar and the heiress to the Bei Fongs and won't give a shit what their family tree looks like?
