They had a whole episode where they didn't do any scams and just fucked around in a junkyard pretending to be space outlaws. Coupled with stuff like their quest to find a television to watch a movie marathon on, their attempt to boost Double D's confidence after he was called a wimp, busting Ed out of being grounded, and all the other mis-ed-ventures they get into that don't involve scams, and it's pretty obvious they're close friends even when they aren't fleecing the neighborhood. Honestly, going by what we can guess of their shared interests, if they weren't scamming kids, Ed and Eddy would probably be dragging Double D out to explore all kinds of abandoned places to look for loot or hang-out spots away from the cul-de-sac.

They were genuine friends at the start, but near the end they seemed annoyed with each other.
