Sure it sucked, but you could still imagine him eventually moving on with the help of the friends he made along the way. It was bittersweet. Then outta nowhere, years after the series ended, they make an issue 30 to set up the sequel series. The new ending's the one that made him an ageless recluse and had everyone else move on with their lives. That was tacked on to the original ending.
