Should the Teenage Ninja Mutant Turtles go on down to earth street level adventures against human ninjas or should it be completely off the walls adventure where they travel in time and fight alien dinosaurs ?

Why not BOTH?

Both

Ninjas and mutants works fine for me. makes sense withing their description. I know a lot of TMNT hate when they change things, even the changes I consider positive like each turtle having am ore distinct design or complete lore revisions but I would like to see a version were don't have to live hiding underground, like mutants are more common and accepted on society and the fact they are ninjas is what make them special.

Sometimes I feel bad about seeing just what apparently are normal kids having to live in filth and in such an isolated environment. Most cartoons at least feels like they only have themselves and a few human friends.

And we should win prizes for watching

The nature of them kinda lends itself to being both inevitably.

The original comics series was a bit more ground but when the Krang were introduced thats when the weirder stuff came out..
With them being mostly behind the mutagen ooze it's oddly logical for more weird stuff to come out.

It honestly can do both very well. Being mutant turtles it gives a sci fi angle from the get go, so it's not like if it was just a story about human ninjas hiding in the sewers and then getting roped up in space operas out of nowhere. Even if you make the Ooze specifically human made from the start to cut out any outside interference, the Ooze itself can be used as a reason to draw in other factions from space for their own use.

I personally like it when it switches between the two for different arcs and then have them culminate for big payoffs. Currently reading the IDW run thanks to a Humble Bundle deal and I'm loving how all the wacky 80s stuff is recontextualized into something more coherent and entertaining that marries the two concepts mostly perfectly.

OP with your thread I now realized that the Simpsons with that joke may unironically refers to TMNT or any similar cartoon show being like this.

At every single point in their history, the TMNT have tried to be and do everything and all its really done is give them a constant identity crisis. Now every new version has to be both a serious and straight faced examination of their alienation and wanting to be part of the world, but having to struggle with their duty as ninjas and their promise to protect the city from the Foot Clan... but also they have to fight Captain Fartpoop, armed with his Bootyblaster Raygun before he destroys Paulie's Pizza Palace!! And wouldn't you just know it! The Floopulons from planet BLORP are invading too! But good thing the Neutrinos just showed up to help out our radical heroes KICK SOME SHELL!

Like most long-running and endlessly rebooted series, TMNT lives in its own shadow and is constantly shackled by an incessant need to try and be more original than its predecessors, but also do as many references as possible to popular and obscure characters and storylines from every previous series and incarnation.

Street level.
Scifi stories were always the shittiest part of TMNT in any media
>>
>>151331420
Agreed. I know it was there from the earliest issues, but you know what else was there in the original mirage run? The fucking Guest Era. Full of stories so stupid and boring that they wouldn't have even make the cut as scripts for the far cheesier cartoon.

The shit people truly love the most from TMNT is the street level stuff. Fighting Shredder on the rooftop. North Hampton. City at War. No one fucking cares about the Fugitoid or Mikey fucking the Triceraton queen during his edgelord phase.

Sci-fi doesn't have to mean aliens and time travel and cyborg alien dinosaur time-travelers. The ooze being alien in origin does open that door, but it doesn't mean that literally anything and everything should also come with it.

>I feel bad about seeing just what apparently are normal kids having to live in filth and in such an isolated environment
but that's a compelling angle for storytelling which is something that Mutant Mayhem and Tales touched on (but anons, for some reason, fucking hated)
>>
>>151333377
That's because Mutant Mayhem has a shitty motivation for the turtles and a weak as fuck dynamic between the brothers. Tales of the TMNT wasn't watched because most didn't know it existed, but it also had the problem is splitting up the brothers for both arcs. It's a show about mutants, but them being mutants isn't really a problem, but at the same time, their villains for the show are centered on mutant drama. It didn't know what it wanted to be and in the end, tells a very confused story that doesn't resonate with anyone.

seems like a similar story that X-Men tells with mutants fighting mutants while also often facing ostracization from the non-mutant public.
You're free to dislike it, but I think there's something there.
>>
>>151333555
Mutant Mayhem and Tales can't actually fully decide what it wants. They've got anti-mutant villains, but no one in the city cares about the turtles being mutants and they go to high school and get invited to parties, and there's zero friction there. They live in a sewer, but they walk around whenever they want.

I'm not saying the ostracization and alienation angle can't work, just that it doesn't work in MM.
