Why did it fail?
Post the concept art for the wishing star, one image explains everything
>>151332362Because every time it came up close to some genuine emotion, an executive stepped in and stopped it.Wish lives up to its premise a few times- At All Costs is a great song, the Queen mourning in song that she's seeing everything good in her husband slowly die, the final confrontation between Asha and Magnifico- but then it's always undercut by a lame gag, or something predictable, or a forced reference, or that fucking goat.
>>151332378looks way better than what we got honestly.but I guess it's not marketable and plushie-able enough for the suits.God I hate these soulless design-by-committee movies Disney has been shitting out for the past decade
>>151332362Looks generic as fuck all.
>>151332397Same thing with Strange World. In the opening minutes someone nearly dies and makes a joke about how this adventure is dangerous(real mistake to undercut any sense of peril in your pulp adventure). Then when the father and son are arguing about something, and it’s clear they’ve a lot of anger, a background character comments “they’re not REALLY arguing about that thing, are they?” You know, in case anyone in the audience was too thick for subtext. Is this “millennial writing” or something else?
>>151332449I don't think it's millenial writing in that it'snot the writers, I think it's what some exec THINKS millenials want from their writing. If that makes sense.
>>151332362jews
>>151332362It is one of the most tone deaf and out of touch films I have ever witnessed.
>>151332412This goes hand in glove with >>151332397If Star was Asha's love interest, the ending would need to be bittersweet, with Star going back to the heavens so that wishes can keep coming true, but never forgetting his time with Asha. The final move has shades of that, but again, waters it down. Star is a quirky lil sidekick, so it's not TOO sad if he leaves, and he has to leave EVENTUALLY, but don't worry, he's not leaving any time soon! Let's have the fucking goat quip about how Star leaving onscreen woukd be too sad! It's sickening, insincere, and reeks of meddling.
>>151332362Because it’s cancer that perfectly sums up the modern state of Disney, it’s generic Disney adult slop, people are right for hating on the corposlop musical that it is, unfortunately, those who hate on it are also hypocrites for liking other blatant corposlop like K-Pop Demon Hunters, a film with Disney channel-level writing that blatantly cashes in on 14 year weebs and koreaboos.
Since Iger steps down next year, is there a chance Disney will recover?
>>151332449another movie with cool concept art that got ruined by committee
Just quit shoehorning black people into European fantasy settings already. There's a big reason why movies like Moana, Aladdin, and Mulan succeed, it's because their ethnicity is culturally relevant to their settings. No one looks at Asha and thinks "Boy, she sure looks Portuguese, I can't wait to watch this movie about Iberian culture!"
>>151332550Things looking better in concept art isn’t just a Disney thing either. Look at the illumination Grinch for example, could’ve looked expressive, full of personality, actually menacing and evil looking, but was completely neutered in the final product. It’s almost as if the only real way to bring a drawing to life is in 2D animation rather than 3D, hhmmmmmmmm
>>151332550I haven't seen this or that other Disney movie with not-Katara, only Wish. Does that actually happen... ?
>>151332608Are the animators too scared of breaking the models or something?
>>151332608that's true usually, but Strange World's post-meddling concept art looks almost as lame as the final product
>>151332540>Since Iger steps down next yearYou really believe that?
>nixed the evil power couple angle because evil queens are anti feminist>nixed the love interest star boy because princesses aren’t allowed to have heterosexual love interests anymoreDisney seriously needs to abandon this activist bullshit
>>151332362The movie was rewritten so many times without just making a new script and had so many cliches crammed in it felt like it was written by AI.
>>151332651I think it’s cause 1: in the 2000’s the whole appeal of 3D was how realistic it looked, times have changed a bit since then but that still doesn’t change the fact the current normies idea of "impressive animation" is seeing how much realistic shit can be rendered in a scene at once and thus it’s "appealing" to them, and 2: pushing a model like that may be too expensive, and Illumination being Illumination likely didn’t wanna spend too much on that aspect, exaggerated or cartoony 3D is possible as shown with films like Hotel Transylvania and many that came after it, obviously, but many execs clearly want to cut costs.Interestingly enough, regarding this and the topic of Disney, Disneys first 3D film Chicken Little actually aimed for a more cartoony and exaggerated look during a time when all 3D animated films were trying to look like real life, but nowadays they have the most bland generic 3D artstyle ever.
>>151332362I saw this in theatres and i could tell it was gonna be bad when they awkwardly exposition dumped the entire premise verbally in the first 15 minutes>>151332449i dont think its fair to call it millenial writing when millenials completely rejected it
>>151332416Don't worry, it's as generic as it looks.
The art direction for this movie is one of the most baffling things I've ever seen. Not one person said anything about how shit it looks (to be fair, I guess they wanted to keep their job) but it's a little crazy that not even a higher up said anything. It literally looks like a viewport render or sofia the first at times, it's so bad
>>151332362Video game cutscene level animation.
>>151332550>dat NVBIAN KWEENif they used that design instead of the ugly goblins in the final product, it would've made a morbillion dollars.
>>151332362Because
>>151333826They claim it's to mimic the watercolor paintings of the old. That shit that Puss in Boots TLW did for a fraction of the budget and whose visual style stands on its own without explanation is what they thought they were achieving.
>>151332362It FAILED? Coulda fooled me https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5tipYzv_tIs
>>151332412>"How is Star different from the genie in Aladdin?"Aren't all of the characters in this movie based off of other Disney IPs??? Why does that matter??
>>151335666cringe AF
>>151332362Because the people in charge were talentless idiots.
>>151332362>Disney: we’re going back to our roots with a traditional evil villain for this movie!>proceeds to make one of their most sympathetic villains everWhy am I supposed to side with the girl over the powerful wizard-king who provides everything for his people, even granting their wishes that are sensible, for no other reason than he’s that nice?Bro doesn’t even charge them rent!!
>>151332397>the Queen mourning in song that she's seeing everything good in her husband slowly dieThe queen got over it really fast.
>>151336645
>>151336645From a neutral perspective, we see a king whose town was destroyed, who wished upon the stars for help, and received no response, so he had to take matters in his own hands and learned magic and founded a kingdom that is to be safe so that no one has to go through that like he did. Some girl asks him to grant her grandfather's wish for no reason and when he says no, she throws a hissy fit and wishes upon a star and actually gets a fucking answer. How on Earth did Disney think this was a good look?
Yes
>>151336574Shame. The artists working under the leadership's were forced to deliver a most generic final product.
>>151332362It was supposed to fail.
>>151332397>Because every time it came up close to some genuine emotion, an executive stepped in and stopped it.They did that to themselves. The premise was flawed from the start and the writers were always going to make a turd. Executives didn't kill this movie because it was already stillborn.
>>151332449>>151332474You people badly overestimate how much executive meddling happens and what form it takes. It's always superficial visuals, like insisting a character LOOK more marketable, and rarely happening at a script level, where they insist on thematic and narrative changes.
>>151336931Thats the point of the movie. Its was a low key tell all.
>>151332362There is nothing intriguing about that cover
>>151338197I feel the same way about Elio. How do you fail to make a SPACE ADVENTURE look exciting?
>>151338296Middle-aged quuersbwjo spent their lives in a fuck awful big city aren't adventurous They're tamed broken reactive human shaped zoo animals.
All of you are wrong. The movie failed because it had no cultural significance. Disney's legacy is by and large the result of taking beloved tales and re-envisioning them.Even if the concept art had made it through and All Your Dreams Came true, it still would have failed because Wish's story has no real foundation outside of Disney fellating itself.NOTHING could have saved this film.
>>151338356Big titty waifus would have saved it. Furries would have saved it like Zootopia.
>>151332362Brown
>>151338296>>151338338Elio is thematically misdirected. Elio feels disconnected from his life but ultimately doesn't have much to draw him back, so when he goes to space he is emotionally fulfilled. His arc ends with the first act and the film doesn't give him much reason to change his mind. The film should have focused on either Elio's aunt and the alien warlord thematically linked by the trials and difficulties of parenting or on Elio's clone with the theme of having to face and adapt to your problems rather than running away.
>this movie in a nutshell
>>151332606There were a lot of black slaves in southern Spanish ports during the early modern period tho. Working. Not that Wish is accurate to anything or anything. I just felt like pointing it out.
>>151332739Chicken Little is unironically better then most of what Disney and Pixar have released for like 7 years now, at least it's more interesting anycase.
>>151332606Yeah...
>>151332362It was soulless shit
>>151332449Millennial writing is the writers who grew up on Whedon, Bendis, and Harmon, and think that deconstructing and constructing your world at the same time is peak comedy. So yes, commenting on the narrative in real time is Millennial as shit.
>>151339263Its something they deem necessary to dumb it didn't fir as many people as possible. But comes off as fear that people will not understand. But jokes? Jokes sre easy to get. Because jokes are how we deal with hiw bad or confusing life can be. A laugh is a...shield fir lack of z better word However its okay to to be earnest and sincere. They just haven't gotten the memo.
>>151339090>There were a lot of black slaves in southern Spanish ports during the early modern period tho.I'm aware. But is that why this film was made, and what it's meant to commemorate? Is that the film people wanted to see?You can "Ummmm technically" any race into the role you want. And you'll be technically correct in some way. But every time you try to put in minority representation just because it's plausible, you intentionally sacrifice the general identity of the culture. Having slaves isn't what made Iberia unique.
>>151332412>We need to replace the love interest in our classic Disney movie with a marketable plushie!>In a movie that ALREADY HAS a marketable plushie.
>>151339176>Um sweaty???: The Post
>>151339942The culture in question is made up you fucking idiot. And you know fuck and all about "mid evil" English cultures outside of what you were taught through shity media and totally untrustworthy historical accounts by western colleges. Im embarrassed for you.
>>151340145>The culture in question is made up you fucking idiot. That was my point from the start. No one can relate to Wish because it's not culturally relevant to anyone. This isn't hard to understand.
Because she ugly and her song sucks
>>151340445Yes to the second, Asha a cute
>>151332362Disney was so busy celebrating itself that it forgot to make a good movie.
>>151332550That art is peak Tumblr. Diverse freaks CRYING and showing EMOTION. This one picture would have gotten countless reblogs in 2011.
>>151332362>Why did it fail?you are just asking for it, arent you?
>>151341456Not the first time that's happened
>>151338296>>151338338>>151338597>ElioReminder that one of Disney's few big successes at the box office in recent time was the live-action Lilo & Stitch. Which like Elio is ALSO about an "orphened little brown kid who makes friends with a space alien". But Stitch actually has a pleasing design and personality from marketing. You can just look at the posters / movie covers and tell right away he's a cute mischievous little dog-like creature that the girl bonds with like a pet. You think many parents and kids would really want a movie about the ugly slug alien from >>151338296 instead? On top of that you can see Stitch is in an attractive bright tropical island setting. Elio posters barely give you anything to go on besides showing the dark void of space with some stars in the background.
>medieval peasant lives to 100 in the kingdomThat's really all you need to hear to know that the king is not the bad guy here.
>>151341606Elio had to prove itself, Lilo & Stitch was already successful two decades ago.
>>151341697I realize that but there's are other reasons the original 2D Lilo and Stitch was popular as well.Look at pic-related. What is there to really catch the audience's interest?
>>151332362Imagine if Bella’s dad almost killed by a pack of wolves and then cracked a joke about it.
>>151341750Not a thing, Disney forgot that their generic "character key art on soft gradient background" approach to covers for DVD and Blu-ray releases only works because they're recognisable, on the merits of the original works.>Kinda ordinary looking kid with wacky smiling alien slug and some kinda emoji>The kid has that lame ass beanmouth design, has an oversized sash that doesn't say anything, has an eye patch for some reason you can only guess if it has any story relevance at all
>>151332362cute but unremarkable movie
>>151341834I feel like streaming is to blame for this.
>>151338296It's honestly amazing how the 'space' section just felt like a generic theme park inhabited by plushie-shaped monsters. Plainest of plain designs, no edge >>151341750>>151341606 I remember seeing some fan edits a while ago where they turned the slug thing into some kind of cute alien boy and suddenly the movie mde so much more sense it was kind of enfuriating
>>151340298Cultural relevance...if a movie with a made up culture. Oh well shit the entire scifi and fantasy drama is going to fail.
>>151341606Lilo and Stitch was a live action remake of a beloved cartoon. Which they butchered with faggotry, spinster loser dyke propaganda, the typical old lesbo mentor/love interest, cucked male, and antinatalist slants.Their all like that now. All of them. And normie women were FURIOUS. Nigga, when the nose ring wearing(cute but still) wearing alt cunts and hot Bible thumping blonde trads agree on a piece of media you know its absolute shit. The billion dollars was 100% money laundering. Guaranteed.
>>151343342>Butchered by faggo-Stopped reading.
>>151338296By making it about Steven Universe after he went on a diet.
>>151343369Sure you did. Abd you had to post that you didn't read itWhich tool more time then reading it.
>>151340145>The culture in question is made up you fucking idiot.NTA but this was a pivot, originally it was magic Iberia and they were very clear about that until they got ripped a new asshole during the marketing period for it. Then all of the sudden it had nothing to do with Iberia at all
>>151343383A Spanish country?Anon, if you go by time period and genetic testing...the moors were still in power.
>>151341504God, that image is depressing.
>>151332362Right out of the gate it is made for only 6.5% of the population domestically. That portion of the population isn't often as well off economically to be throwing money at a single movie.Even if they were they'd need to find someone to watch the baby they're raising by themselves.Good for virtue signaling, but definitely not good for business.Fact of the matter was that they have learned absolutely nothing from Princess and the Frog.
>>151332362>Why did it fail?Because the plot boils down to: the evil white man steals the black people dreams and black girl boss hero saves the day to become queenIts all so tiresome and uninteresting
>>151332362Jennifer Lee
>>151332362Creation by committee. Disney thinks they can make a hit by letting execs play mad-libs instead of taking a chance on letting someone with a single creative vision take the helm. This is a widespread problem with media in general right now, but it was especially egregious in this case since it was supposed to be a 100 year anniversary that they clearly cared more about marketing than actually making a film with any sort of vision.
>>151336931Don't forget that the wise king also suffered from massive PTSD. Fuck the victims, just curse them forever, I guess.
>>151338597>The film should have focused on either Elio's aunt and the alien warlord thematically linked by the trials and difficulties of parenting or on Elio's clone with the theme of having to face and adapt to your problems rather than running away. This is unironically too mature for the current spineless Pixar execs. These are the same people who were terrified for the movie to even mention divorce because it's "too wild".
>>151345444>Elio plays out the same for the first act, ends with him going to space and getting cloned>Second act follows both, Elio getting into fun hijinks while Clone gets stuck living Elio's life>Clone bonds with Elio's aunt due to both suddenly having to live their lives for someone else, decides just because he has to live Elio's life doesn't mean he has to do what Elio did>Third act flips the tone, Elio's space antics continue but are increasing having to cover of his lies and going off the rails while Clone becomes a better student, son, makes friends, and takes charge of the life he's expected to lead>parallel behavior indicates it's all things Elio could have done himself if he wasn't focused on escaping his life>Third act climaxes with Clone being found out as Elio returns having made a mess of things in space, expecting to use Clone to take his place so he can once again run away from his problemsNot sure the best way to wrap up the film, but it shouldn't have been hard to write "Self-Actualization: the Kid's Movie."
>>151343315>well shit the entire scifi and fantasy drama is going to fail.If it's made by Disney, yeah. They're incompetent with both and that's not what people want from them. Their biggest successes are either anthropomorphic, established folklore, or at least follow a cultural aesthetic. Usually a combination of the three.
>>151339176>WE WUZ ROMANS UND SHIETDo Germans really?
>>151341606>>151341750>>151343210fuck you, the slug is good, it's the dumb spic protagonist that ruined everything.
What would you say the last watchable Disney flick was, /co/?I kind of tapped out after Frozen which was alright
>>151347302Frozen 2
>>151332362Because the messaging and morals of the movie are psychotic "Fuck you, got mine, responsibility is for chumps" shit, the character dyanamics are all fucked up, and the plot is weak and contradictory. Its a bad movie, worse yet its a bad movie trying to pretend its profound despite it sabotaging itself every step of the way.
>>151332528K-pop demon hunters was shallow but fun. Wish was shallow and awful. People are willing to overlook flaws if they are having a good time.
>>151343400>the moors were still in power. The style and architecture does a poor job of representing anything particularly moorish. It's much more European gothic than islamic, and the whole "Iberian" setting comes off as just some vague excuse to have a brown princess in a renaissance castle. The end result is something that no one particularly identifies with except for reddit historians who try to shame people into liking it for karma.
>>151343400It was the moops
>>151347302I like Encanto
Would Elio have been a better movie if they’d kept the queerness in it? Would it have been more successful? Should we start a campaign to release the queer cut? It’s very important to me to push for more gay little boys. Not that I’m some sort of pervert. Lol I’m not Trump. I’m just a Democrat.
