Why is this series so rarely talked about? It's pretty good
We storytimed the first volume this year
>>151339777I know, I just meant more in general
>>151339819Well the answer is fairly simpleThe series only has two trades and only one of them is properly scanned/ripped.Chabot himself specializes in comedy comics which are a niche lower than superhero fare and while he has done for Marvel it's stuff like Tsum Tsum comics. He's pretty prolific among SpongeBob comics and Nickelodeon magazine stuff and you'd THINK that would be popular among cartoon fans (especially given how much of a passion project the SpongeBob comics were to Hillenburg himself) but somehow noSpongeBob comics haven't been fully scanned either which is mind boggling given the lengths its fanbase have gone for lost mediaAnyways, at first I thought The Mighty Skullboy Army's collected editions being published by Dark Horse might have been a "wrong publisher for the wrong audience" deal but they also have done Plants vs Zombies, Bandette, etc for kids comics but then again how many Anons actually actively discussed those comics to begin with?
>>151339933Damn that fucking sucks, maybe it would've been better if he signed to scholastic since they have a lot of comedy/cartoony comics? I don't know, I just feel like under the different circumstances this could've been a lot more well known
>>151340315I mean, it began as a self-published all-ages indie comic post-crash and before Scholastic really took off with Graphix. It's a fairly interesting point in comics history (in my perspective) with plenty of titles that did their very best to get awareness/success but fell into obscurity (some more than others').Dark Horse in particular just really liked Chabot's work enough to be part of two books they published meant to highlight new talent
>>151340315Also, Scholastic themselves aren't a guarantee for success (just look at that page from Ginseng Roots where Craig Thompson laments how poorly Space Dumplins did)Magic Pickle by Scott Morse was a in similar boatDebuted in a self-published comic, got a miniseries under Oni, said miniseries got collected by Scholastic and re-released in color in 2008, had like three chapter books, and just recently came back in 2024 (Scott Morse worked for Pixar) with Roots of DoomIt has 1 rating on Amazon and 2 reviews (11 ratings) on Good Read
>>151340564I'm trying to logically break down why something like this would happen, but I honestly just don't get it. Dumplins I can kind of understand, like with what >>151335837 said, but why would something like MP be shunned so hard? I haven't read it, but it looks fun and cool and I can easily see kids enjoying it, or at least there being more than 2 reviews on good read. And how the fuck does an IP as big of spongebob have its comics ignored so hard as well? I just don't get it
>>151340705Speaking out of first hand experience, I really enjoyed reading Magic Pickle back in 2008 when I was still its intended audience but this was during the recession and Borders closed down.Haven't read the new book though.I think it being dormant and just having a comeback all of a sudden in a completely new environment might have not done it any favors.>And how the fuck does an IP as big of spongebob have its comics ignored so hard as well?Granted, people know about SpongeBob comics (there have been plenty of times the "Death Spiral" panel criticizing the direct market from that FCBD issue was posted) but the fact there's like a solid chunk just waiting to be scanned perplexes me.It's not like the Marvel UK Rugrats comics where you can understand why most of it hasn't been scanned but no, SpongeBob comics ended in 2018.
But also, while I don't fully buy into why that Anon argued why Space Dumplins couldn't reach kids I think it's worth mentioning Morse's artstyle became more detailed for Roots of Doom
>>151340705Oh yeah I forgot to mention this about SpongeBobThey weren't released digitally and there was one guy scanning them and eventually he just stopped.I could be wrong but IIRC there is less people scanning comics now than there was back then because almost everything new is digital.I recall Marvel's Red Band comics being controversial because they lacked digital options and it took weeks for them to be scanned (if scanned at all since I think there are still some that haven't gotten it yet).
You know in retrospectI'm a bit surprised Skullboy wasn't in Nickelodeon Magazine unless there's something I'm forgettingWould've fit nicely
>>151339671Comedy isn't talked that much for comics
>>151339671/co/ doesn't like talking about enjoyable things /co/ would rather argue over controversial or divisive things
>>151342135which is weird since it's sister medium, cartoons, is known for comedy. I guess gag comic strips are only talked about
>>151342258How many recent comedy cartoons that don't have loreshit get discussed actively on /co/?
>>151342315Well maybe not a lot of recent ones other than smiling friends, but it's not hard to find threads for comedies from the 2000's and 90's and before
>>151342389Thing is?We grew up on thoseIt's kind of the same reason why DOAWK and Capain Underpants can get threadsA lot of us actually grew up reading those books
>>151339933Heehee, cute monke
>>151340315Erik Larsen really wanted to have the Mighty Skullboy Army published at Image since his kid was a huge fan and some of the comics were colorized as back-ups in a couple of Savage Dragon issues as well as a crossover with G-Man.Larsen himself has joked to Chabot at conventions that Mighty Skullboy Army would've been on its 5th or so trade by nowNot sure if that'd actually be the case
>>151344164Cuter skeleton boy!
>>151339671Does this have any good kemonos?
>>151339671That teacher(?)'s got a nice pair on her
>>151339671It looks like it's for little kids.
>>151349193You're on /co/
