My friend told me if I make a comic using the left side’s style I would be way more popular than using the right side. Is he right or wrong? I understand why a cartoony style would be more appealing as I’m starting out but everyone loves mangaish art so I feel as if I would have a higher ceiling if I started with left.
>>151341402less complex lines = easier to drawpopularity depends on contents, not on artstyle.
>>151341402Third option: use both styles
>>151341473I agree with you but appeal/artstyle is a factor that comes into whether someone picks up your comic or not.
>>151341402In my opinion (as a consumer) it will depend heavily on the type of story you want to tell and how the style complements it. The artstyle will accentuate the dialogues, the scenes, the movement (or illusion of it), the atmosphere. With that said, I like both your styles. The right one for the anime with somewhat realistic features, it's right in the middle and works fantastically for more drama/action series, with a mature story and characters that feel real. Few examples I can give that I enjoyed: Pluto, Street Fighter 2 (movie), Akira. Honorable mentions are Guts and Cowboy Bebop, cause I haven't watched 'em.The left side is excelent because it looks more unique compared to anything I have seen in the last decades. One can tell it's heavily inspired in Scott Pilgrim and something else that escapes me. Anyway, a more simplistic style to be sure, but it has its advantages: more exaggerated and dynamic moves/expressions. It will give you a freedom that the other won't. But that means your story should be more energetic, more enthusiastic.Does that help?
>>151341986Very helpful write up anon. Thanks
>>151342096Anytime. Your drawing really hooks me up. Despite how little you show I'm digging it, do you have anything else you could share? Or about the story?Aside from that, if you're looking for a middle ground, I would recommend the styles of Avatar, Ben 10 (original), Wakfu—anything from the shows, the comics, the specials, the movies, it has so much variety—and Kingdom Hearts (maybe).
I also want to recommend Holyland, because I love it, simple as. The faces are off putting sometimes, but the rest of the art is so great. The story is incredibly potent and the fights are grounded. It's definitely my favorite manga about martial arts, period.
>>151342298I have a few ideas for ongoing stories I want to tell but I have never really made a comic before so I’m probably just going to make some one shots first and see what people enjoy. The first one I will probably work on is about a guy falling in love with a ghost girl. Here are some doodles I did on some flashcards.
>>151342404here are some more
>>151342404>The smug girl in the centerYup, spiritual animal right there
>>151341402Is this 'friend' in the room with you right now? Silly bits aside, it all begins when someone picks it up so I say dont worry too much and just go with what you do best. Although as some people have said, a combination of the 2 would be worth trying. Id wager you'd be a quicker pick if you go with a 100% right, kawaii moe stuff people love so much but you could also go for a more vintage approach think Tezuka, Monkey Punch, Takao Saitou. Gekiga in general has very interestng and varied aesthetics, if you are into that.
>>151341402Just do what feels right. If your friend is the one pushing you to make a comic in the first place, maybe you don't want to draw a comic at all, or try to at least settle for something you actually want to do.If I was a reader of yours, I'd bother reading left since it got a distinct, nicer art-style to look at while the right is kind of overdone. The harsher lines on the left makes it more appealing to the eyes. Also you drew more facials expression on the left, meaning you give more of a shit about that style.
Thank you all for the feedback. I am going to try and stick it out with the cartoony side.>>151342606I’ll look into trying to combine the two, although I think it will be more difficult to do since I would have less references to already existing work.>>151342615>Also you drew more facials expression on the left, meaning you give more of a shit about that style. You’re probably right.
>>151341402Anime style is more appealing and popular, BUT if it's generic or off looking and too western it might not be appealing to people who'd just want Japanese drawn manga. That said the left feels a bit generic too. I would say lean into the right but maybe simplify a bit more and don't think of it as "anime/manga"
I just noticed the cyclop on the right, but it's nowhere on the left.
>>151342749>Anime style is more appealing and popularDo you think it is more popular for comic creators outside of East Asia though?
>>151341402Now draw something other than faces.
>>151343060I have to admit, I am worse with bodies seeing as how I have to use construction to place them into backgrounds. I’m planning on just using 3d models for backgrounds so I don’t really have to worry on that front. Faces are what I just like mindlessly doodling.
>>151342827It depends. Radiant is very popular but it mimics manga better than most western attempts.
>>151341402Depends entirely on the writing tone you're going for. If it's wacky hijinks or a bit goofy the style on the right might look stiff and weird. If it's a crime investigation comic right might work way better. Sometimes tonal mismatch works, but almost always by having the cartoony style in the more serious context, seldom the other way aroundThe nips can (usually) pull off things mostly being like the right but slipping into more goofy art styles for comedic moments, but it usually comes off as just imitating manga when it's done in comics
>>151343147Not OP, but the art looks nice, can you show a fight? I wanna see without having to go through random chapters
>>151343147>mimics manga better than mostin what regard?
>>151341402for what my opinion is worth(jack) I prefer right because it is also what my art evolved into
>>151341491Who was she talking about?
>>151344725Her cat
>>151341402Left side has expressions, right side has one expression and then people staring off jntospace looking wistful.
>>151341402i like left better, better for funi faces hehehe
>>151341402Thicker outlines and more angular shapes seems like it'd be more fun to read, but it ultimately depends on the type of story and genre you're aiming for.
>>151346428Haha, dude looks as if Von Karma was having an aneurysm
bump
>>151349330Why would you bump my post?
>>151344761Pfft...Women.
>>151341402One has too much competition with a manga inspired art style, including manga itself.Good simplified stylized art stands out more.
>>151342317Based, it’s also one of my favourites.
>>151341402>Can write but can't draw/illustrate for shit>Know my story would probably work better in a visual medium>Refuse to use AI SlopLet's say, hypothetically, that I wanted to commission someone to make a comic adaptation spanning let's say 7 issues. Ballpark-wise, how many thousands of dollars are we talking here?
>>151344220Page composition, use of motion and what movement is depicted, use of speedlines, use of graytones.
>>151341402keep the designs from the left, but draw them in the style of the right. like that space dandy lookin fucker at the top left.
>>151350109If you want to work on a small (30ish pages) oneshot with me (op) for free add me on discord at schizoneet
What do your full bodies and backgrounds look like? How are you with props, vehicles, animals, etc.?
You should draw porn
>>151352004All weaker than my faces (Full bodies > props >>> backgrounds >>>>> vehicles & animals (I will avoid them lol). Planning on working on smaller oneshots alongside starting line of action again to strengthen everything all at once.
