I would just have him appear/disappear/alter reality in a subtle way between cuts, no poofing or pyrotechnics, just slightly unnerving impossible things happening. I would also just cast an interesting/annoying short actor and put him in the purple suit and bowler hat.

So a DC project with Mxy could just use the design from the animated Superman series.I also think that it could be good for Mr. Mxyzptlk to have a sequence where he changes designs. Cartoon, CGI, live action, maybe he can even appear as an actor in a mo-cap suit. Just get weird with it.Mxy is all about being fun and creative. Didn't try to imitate Gilbert but instead brought his own take to Mxy which fits him well.The game itself is pretty bland but the voice performance saves it.
