Why did Vilgax even want to Omnitrix when he was stronger than any alien in it outside of Alien X and Clockwork?
He wanted it for an army not for himself to wield as a weapon

I would also chalk it up to Ben being a young kid for most of his loses to vilgax, as he got older he got better at fighting vilgax.
