the concept of adding this character to your show is so fucking dumb it's actually kind of funny in a meta way

My mom unironically liked this guy as a kid.

It's weird to me that "jump the shark" entered the lexicon when this guy came into the world over a decade earlier. I guess "introduce the Gazoo" doesn't roll off the tongue as well, though.

Yeah.

Are there any examples of later season addition characters that actually took off in sitcoms? Always seems like they're duds.

Pat Morita or Al Molinaro in Happy Days?

the Simpsons is full of them, Fat Tony, Sea Captain, Chalmers, Jeff Albertson, Moleman, Frink, McBain, Nick Riviera, the Blue Haired Lawyer, Roger Meyers Jr, the squeaky teen, Drederick Tatum, Dr Hibbert, Lionel Hutz, Snake

You're right, a lot of those were introduced later, but most appear in season 2 (if limited) and a couple (Chalmers and Sea Captain) in season 4. I guess I still think of them all as early Simpsons.

The Happy Days example is good. Woody on Cheers and Frank & Estelle on Seinfeld too. Lots of good counterpoints.

I guess it does work out sometimes, and lame characters being introduced in last seasons might just be a symptom of the show getting stale in general. Or they feel lame because a show is already on its last legs. Maybe I should've wrote last/near last season characters instead.

I can see him being like the minions on facebook having memes and sassy phrases attached to images of him looking "cool."

Happy Days even had its own form of Gazoo (Mork) that spun its own spin-off show
