This one scene from a 90s manga shows a more creative use of a simple power than 99.99% of Western comic books. The character can create zippers on any surface, so he unzips his arm, stretches it through the zippers, and unzips the floor to launch a sneak attack on the villain. Why can manga do this, but comic books usually don’t?
>>151362798>Manga made to be weird (its in the title) has weird superpowersNo shit.
>>151363208and capeshit can't compete
>>151362798how is this not a worse version of the Spot?
>>151363295yet,fights in jojo are thriller with twist ending, where suspense came from uncertainty of situation, and twist is unpredictable way of defeating enemy
60s-70s Marvel and DC is full of creative uses of powers. It’s just that a lot of it came off as retarded and as a push for more “realism” came, these depictions lessened. And the pace of American storytelling generally isn’t set up for explaining powers the way manga does. Sure, characters will talk during fights, but power uses are more instantaneous
>>151362798Does it really matter if it results in the same old punch to the face? Creative would be severing the other guys limbs with zippers or something. Mr Fantastic turning into a dodgeball or Spider-man making shields out of web isn't really that far behind from stuff like this. Hell the Green lantern's entire power set is using shit they come up with from their imagination which is the actual definition of creativity
>>151363360>Creative would be severing the other guys limbs with zippers or somethinghe can do that do
>>151362798>Another east vs west shit thread Hoo boy, here we go againBtw, part 5 sucks7 > 6 > 3 > 2 > 1 > 4 > 8 > 5
>>151362798You would have no idea what the fuck was going on without all the explanation though.
>>151362798Because western writers AND READERS see the actual fighting as low brow compared to character drama.
>>151362798You're right but its also facing off against a prime example above how shitty and inconsistent stands can be (king crimson). Sticky Fingers is also one of the best written stands in jojo by a country mile so its not that fair of a comparison. Most of the powers in jojo aren't even as good as SF
i read both manga and western comics although to be honest i started with manga. I think manga does action and fight scenes in general much better than the western stuff.
I have never read a single manga in my life.

>>151363308This. Half of Jojo fights aren't even real hand-to-hand combat. They go something like>Heroes are trying to accomplish some random, even trivial task e.g., walking across a room>They notice something strange about the environment>Suddenly, one of them has a 7 inch gash across their chest>"This must be the work of an enemy stand!">"We have to make it across the room!">Tennis match of each side figuring out some aspect of how the others' stand works and countering with an ability of their own>Lots of posing in the meantime
>>151362798You left out the part where the hero goes "power of friendship" and bull-rushes through the deliberately vague hax power that stops working when the plot says so
>>151364465I think page economy has something to do with it. For each installment, a comic has to get plenty of important story or characterization across because it's all you're getting in one floppy. For manga, all you really need is to fill your quota of pages while keeping the readers entertained every week. I think this made western comics always focus more on the story than the action. Also, less effort is needed for comics because they rely on the brand/IP more than manga, since they figure it's something that people already recognize and will read no matter how shitty.
