Why do indie comic publishers/labels have such a tough time making an impact compared to the big two? do comic readers in the US really only want capeshit ?
>>
according to perch ghost machine is putting out some of the best books right now
>>
>>151363724
I think Diamond might be part of the problem.

"Best" is meaningless. It just means some rando liked it, and liking things is mainly based on personal taste. I don't like a single Ghost Machine title because none of them are to my tastes (=big tiddy animesque action girls).

how so

>do comic readers in the US really only want capeshit ?
Yes. Or occasionally horror.
Also any successful third party capeshit tends to get bought up by DC or Marvel eventually. With a few exceptions, of course.
>>
its simple really. the people who read comics and the people who read manga are two different sets of people (with some cross pollination)

Yes. /thread

Ghost Machine is just Image. BOOM has a few big sellers but i dont know "big" of a publisher they really are or there market share. DSTLRY is almost certainly niche. The dumbfucks apparently participate in artificial scarcity too so fuck em. All I know FMP has done is Ronin which i dont read. Amazing Comics is under MadCave I dont care about Quesada's Hamlet prequel, but Garth Ennis, J. Michael Straczynski, Ryan Stegman and Christopher Priest are also involved so i want to see what theyre gonna be working on before passing judgment. AWA and Mad Cave have a few solid titles between them but not big sellers. Not that well known generally.

>>151363724
take out Ghost Machine and Boom and I'll agree
>>151363770
see?
>>151364074
interesting insight Anon, guess I'll watch out for Amazing too
>>
>>151364208
check out mad cave and AWA too

>>151364221
will do

>indie
It's self-published or VERY small publishers or bust
I like Image but the publisher behind The Walking fucking Dead isn't "indie"
>>
Has there been any large survey, as in thousands of people saying what it would take for them to buy comics? I'm not saying heeding their comments would actually help but it'd be interesting to hear why people don't read and what would make them read.

I honestly think it's a marketing thing. There just isn't a sense of "we need to read this now!". I know an indie publisher can't finance a tv show or movie as an advertisement, but honestly some voice over and slick edited panels from the comic playing in vertical format for tiktok and youtube would probably do wonders compared to doing nothing.
>>
>>151364309
Yes it is, success doesn't stop them from being independent.
>>
>>151364309
ok well what companies would you consider indie and why cant they compete
>>

>Also any successful third party capeshit tends to get bought up by DC or Marvel eventually
do they still do that? sounds like 00's/'90s stuff
>>
Why don't more target kids? Scholastic does well (I know, bookfairs are a bit of an unfair advantage) but there's got to be a hungry market there, and kids comics can usually get away with simpler art so it's not as time consuming or demanding to release it.
>>
i dont know thats a good question. not indie but i feel ike the big two dont think there is a market there
>>
>>151364753
was meant for >>151364473
>>
>>151364784
DC regularly does kiddie/YA books
>>
>>151364784
Or going at a sort of "educational" angle as a publisher? Making comic adaptations of western literature, like the old Classics Illustrated? I dunno, it just doesn't feel like any publishers really have a business plan beyond "we'll make great comics and people will flock to them!".
>>
>>151363724
They also accept books about 80's cartoon/toy nostalgia
>>
>>151363724
Because they’re the same level of quality without the bonus of brand loyalty and familiarity tempting people to buy despite that
>>
>>151363724
They're crap.
Big 2 are also crap, but gotta have my Batman.
>>
>>151363724
How many of those produce capeshit or pseudo-capeshit though?
>>
I get the impression threads like these are filled with people who barely follow the industry to begin with but think they know the problems
>>
>>151363724
they only publish
>>
>>151364362
Licenseshit like Transformers ISN'T indie
>>
>>151365740
They have their outsider persepective.
>>
>>151363724
Not enough money to promote. Not that big popcultural character.
See how Turtles made it big.
>>
>>151364309
Mate the walking dead was huge from 2002-2010, poser like you that discover the walking dead thanks to TV series don't have any clue about comicbook publishers.
>>
>>151363770
By what measurements?
>>
>>151365740
oh and you're so smart ?
>>
>>151364807
Which are mostly fodder for libraries to put in their kids sections.
