Gumball and Smiling Friends' only similarity is that they both used mixed media art styles. Gumball's adult equivalent is more likely South Park. Both were wacky cartoons focused on a class of students that gradually evolved into having way more social commentary with the adults getting more of a presence. There's more to it than that that I struggle to put into words right now, but if you have watched both, you can start to feel Gumball taking cues from the South Park the further into it you get.
