Flash animated cartoons like this are so interesting to me. On the surface they seem "low effort", but my brain doesn't think they are. MLP Friendship is Magic is the same thing, it's a stage with a bunch of props that they use over and over, but it doesn't seem that way when you watch it.The only cartoons that I thought were exceedingly "cheap" were the old Hanna Barbara cartoons because every character was stuck on a 2D plane and walked left and right like a sidescroller video game.Johnny Test and all that seem to still have 3D depth

>>151503752It's interesting that you call out HB as cheaper because their methodology was very similar to modern day rigging. They'd often make cels with individual body parts on them, to allow for individual movement and reuse. The only real difference is that digital rigging can rescale the parts automatically, whereas the HB animators would have to redraw everything in a new scale (or draw a larger background and jury-rig a higher platform for the camera) every time they wanted to add depth. The ease with which it can be done these days is a testament to exactly how cheaply rigging can be done.

>>151503752I think it's because the additional frames you get with rigging can look really nice and smooth and well made when you get good at using the program and balancing between rigs and drawing substitutions. Hanna Barbera/80s shows look cheap because it is. They leave out integral frames and a lot of them are poorly drawn so it looks sloppy AND choppy. With rigs there are always on model and never really lack frames.
