I second this was their best episode to date between both shows. Caleb's backstory lent itself well to animation. It was fuckin brutal. Kinda crazy they all know his real name and backstory so early though, this will force a ton of future scenes to be completely different or just absent down the line

For a non German voice actor Caleb's German is *fine* if he keeps it to 1-2 words, but when he starts speaking more than half a sentence, then it gets really noticeable. Just imagine a thick German accent like that of ikithon but worse, that's basically what Caleb speaking German sounds like.

Interestingly enough some characters had perfect German, like Ikithon, and some of the other zemlyan people Caleb spoke to. But the other half has an obvious accent and bad pronounciation, including one (or both? I don't remember anymore) of his parents lmao

In terms of grammar it's been mostly fine, I don't remember any blatant mistakes

Appreciate that they were ballsy enough to say one of the protagonists is basically an ex-Gestapo freak who killed his family and gets off torturing his enemies, but I also think they went so hard that it's awkward that everyone is just cool staying with him. Like if I were any of them, I'd instantly want to leave his ass either out of fear or self-preservation, even if it's clear that he's not affiliated with that group anymore. He did all that shit out of his own free will, he may have been groomed into that position, but he still chose to do it. Plenty of fantasy heroes doubt the last second and can justify themselves, but he didn't. Which is really cool in terms of character building, but borderline unredeemable for a "hero". Maybe I'm too harsh, but the first thing I thought after seeing the episode wasn't "poor Caleb" and more "you were a really horrible person".
Every episode, this group has more reasons to get away from each other (outside of their respective duos), but they stick together because...they have to. Molly is the worst one; he lost his entire family because of them, something he's willing to remind them of constantly, but sticks with the ones who ruined his life because they're "interesting".
I think the main problem with this show is that it tries to be both a very dark, dramatic, and epic fantasy story, but also a fun fantasy found family thing like Vox Machina. And I'd rather it chose one or the other, as I can't take it seriously enough to be engaged in the drama, and it's not funny enough to just be a fun hang like the previous show. A lot of the comedy bits feel extremely out of place when the shit that happens is so dark and intense. I remember VM spreading out comedy way more. There were multiple episodes where comedy just dies for a good while, and here, there are comedy bits every episode, despite the violence being way darker.

The Pavlik Morozov story is mostly propaganda fiction, by the way. The real Pavlik was some rando illiterate peasant hooligan, who informed on his cheating deadbeat dad for family reasons and was later killed in fight over a gun with some other teenagers. The Soviet propaganda turned it into a story of a heroic young communist martyr, but in reality it was just peasant trash killing each other over personal grudges.

I imagine the actual reason is that when they were making Vox Machina they wanted to cast a wider net, beyond their usual critical role fandom, and normies would find material, somatic and verbal components being necessary for spellcasting to be boring. Now that they've got their name out there they can be truer to the source material with Mighty Nein while retaining viewership, while it might not be perfectly one to one as it needs to flow differently in animation than it would in the ttrpg it's still much closer
if you want an in universe answer, I dunno, western spellcasters are just better, I guess?

Its the very same, they just didnt focus so much on how magic works while doing Vox Machina. I mean, the only real wizards we saw was Lady Allura and young Trent & some faceless Cerberus Assembly mages in the Ripley flashback. And young Trent even in said flashback used a spell component ( some stone) for his desintegrate spell

Also if you have a arcane focus (like a staff, a wand or something like that) you can cast spells without components

totally forgot about my girl Delilah, who of course was also a (necromancer subclass) Wizard. And she had her Residuum crystal choker that always started to glow when she used spells, so it most likely functioned as her arcane focus, freeing her of needing to use spell components like Caleb and the other Volstruckers needed to.

Oh, not by a long shot. He was Trents star pupils, but thats about it. Wildemount (the eastern continent) has many mages more potent than him, especially at this point in time. Trent, Vess de Rogna (the green lady on the kings council), Ludinus Da´leth (the white haired elf on the kings council).

And of course Lady Allura would mogg Caleb. She is royal courtmage of Tal´doreis mightiest kingdom. To get in that position you need to be top notch.
