Act II continues with 1993.

Last time, Act I came to a close with the introduction of Sadie Summers and the football team winning a championship because all of their opponents forefeited. Les's date to te prom stood him up while Barry Balderman had a nervous breakdown leaving Les to give the valedictorian speech where he ranted about how exclusionary high school was.

Act II started with Les, now a college graduate, returning to Westview High to take up a job as an English teacher. Funky, unable to find a job after graduation, started working at Montoni's while we were introduced to a few of the new high school class: Sadie, Funky's cousin Wally, and overachieving blerd Monroe Madison.

This storyline about the band marching in the inagural parade is going to have a lot of consequences mainly for this year but even well into late Act III.

Here we have the introduction of Susan Smith, the strip's favorite punching bag, figuratively AND literally. She'll play a fairly big role until her class graduates in 1998, then again in the first few years of Act III. She'll basically be trotted out whenever Batiuk wants to inject some drama but I get the impression that, for whatever reason, he seemed to have it out for her. I like her well enough but man, when you want to talk about miserable Funky characters she'll be up near the top of the list just below Wally.

Each Westview class is going to have it's lummox bully. Funky's had Bull, Wally's will be Ironhead (later Stonehead, then ffinally settling on Marblehead) Morton, Darin's will be Matt Miller, it skips Summer's because she's the (to use Batiuk's language) sporto, then Owen and Cody's has Wedgeman.

This is basically the problem Dinkle runs into. He worked in the cartoonier Act I but in the more dramatic stuff he becomes more and more out of place which isn't helped by the fact that instead of inventing new scenarios, Batiuk keeps running the same old gags with him over and over. So you'll have something dramatic and serious and then it gets derailed in favor of another week of Claude Barlow gags, or flutophone concerts, or band turkeys or whatever so it starts to wear thin by this point.

And the first appearance of the now adult Cindy, who's basically completely dropped her mean girl shtick but not her big hair. I don't think it's until around 1998 or so that she finally gets a non-dated hairstyle. And this hairstyle was sure as hell dated even in 1993.

I'd say that Batiuk did it so you'd recognize Cindy but, well, here's Lisa who looks nothing at all like she did in high school. And yes, this is the real start of what will eventually end in cancer.

Now you'd think that this would be putting the whole "Bull bullied Les" thing to rest. But you'd be wrong because Les, especially in Act III, will still feel the need to bring it up as if them now being even never happened and as if Bull didn't do a lot for him. Even the retconning of how the bullying went down won't be enough.

Anyway, we also have the introduction of Linda Lopez who will be Ginny's replacement. She'll teach the same classes, looks kind of the same, will take Ginny's role as Les's work wife. She and Bull will also eventually marry so she's sticking around for the remainder of the strip.

The introduction of Linda is followed up by the introduction of her daughter Mickey. She'll be around until, like the rest of this era of students, she graduates in 1998 and then more or less disappears from the strip entirely until the later years where she makes some minor appearances when Bull starts to have his major late era storyline.

She might actually appear more than Jinx now that I think about it.

Time for me to go to bat for Act II, because missteps aside I genuinely think Batiuk shows some improvement as a writer. Wally feels like the character Funky should have been in Act I. He's like an amalgamation of Funky and Les; While he's clearly low in the pecking order like Les and victimised as a result of it, he's also got some of that Funky snark and charm. In Act I Funky basically got sidelined in his own comic because if was obvious Batiuk preferred writing Les, but Les often came across as just too damn pathetic. I think Wally strikes a better balance, he's a more rounded character.

You could probably make a case that in-universe, Mickey getting attention for being a girl on the football team means Sadie wants her in her group since that would make them more popular by extension. On a meta example it was likely more because she's now the only other girl of note in this class.

Also, at least Cindy still has a bit of the old spite for her sister.

Yeah like I'm more lenient on a lot of the stuff in the comic but even I just stopped and wondered what the hell? when Les brought it up at Bull's grave the way he did. No acknowledgement of how far both of them had come from their high school days? It felt extremely backwards and I wondered if he forgot that it didn't work with the way he'd been writing the two since Act 2. Like if we'd seen them antagonistic throughout most of Act 2 and 3 and Les going out of his way to avoid him then it would've worked. But it doesn't work because of how they patched things up and usually frequent in each others' lives

Bull does a lot for Les and his family, gets outright told that Bull actually envied him, and Les still cries about getting punched out. Hell, half the time their "fights" were because Les would make some smart ass remark insulting Bull in the first place. Bull is straight up one of the nicest characters in the series and gets a lot of undue shit later on.

Yeah, it's definitely a joke about that. It's pretty funny in hindsight because the early '90s was basically the height of the "Japan is going to take over" fearmongering. 1989 was when Sony purchased Columbia Pictures and Rockefeller Center, 1990/91 is when Matsushita bought MCA (and thus Universal). 1992 is when Michael Crichton's book Rising Sun came out and 1993 had the movie adaptation. The fear of Japan Inc. as it was called went away soon after because nobody realized how bad things would immediately get.

It part of why I thought Batiuk was gonna reveal this was multiverse stuff, where things from different timelines got merged. Like, Les saying that feels like he came from a timeline where the stuff from Act 2 and 3 never happened. Or Amazing Fantasy #15 being on the comics rack during Funky's time in high school, during Crazy's time travel. Or the "dream" reunion meeting between the younger Funky cast and their older selves. Or all the different possible timelines we've covered. But it only was the time bubble that kept Funky out of sync with what was going on in Crankshaft

In yesterday’s strips, we learned that the sentient leaf strips were actually just Les daydreaming what they’d be thinking. Does this open a big can of worms for Funkyverse lore? Were all of the sentient object strips just Les’s imagination, including the Halloween watermelon strips that directly reference and address Batiuk, also part of his imagination? Meaning that the Funkyverse actually being a comic strip was just something Les imagined?

Yeah, I can't believe I did, here's the version I had.

There's actually a script for UBO that deals with the paywall (easy enough to find if you use Grandpa Google) and unlike the old GoComics site, the new one winds up letting you directly grab the images.
>>
>>151583042
Wasn't she introduced as having been an office aide, being on the yearbook committee, and others?
>>
>>151585626
Yes but Batiuk still hasn't shifted full from gag to drama mode so it's just a comedic thing meant to make her being a virtual ghost funnier, same with not even her mother knowing who she is. Notice how the word definition and other filler gag weeks still crop up? Those are completely gone after next year too.
>>
>>151586291
Do you think the strip would’ve been better off if Batiuk had done a FBoW and had the strip progress in real time while still keeping the tone the same?
>>
>>151586805
If he had done real time progression and was able to do more of a mix of comedy and drama it'd be fine. I generally think that for whatever faults it has Act II is fairly readable and even enjoyable up until 2003. That's the year where things start going off of the rails IMO and he leans way too hard into trying to one up himself.
>>
We know Dick Tracy has a crossover with Funky that gets covered in both comics, which means the characters Dick Tracy meets might also be real in Funkyverse, like The Spirit and Green Hornet

Also Flash comics exist but The Flash Museum also exists, somewhere in Act 3
>>
>>151582667
Now, that last panel is banner material if I've ever seen it. I'd whip out paint.net but I'm on my cell. Which also means I needed to wait two minutes to post this >.>

Also, between Dinkle and Cindy, I feel like Batiuk is at his best when he's doing more outlandish cartoony character things. His more serious stuff feels more like it's bringing the tone down.

This was almost certainly based on Reddi-Bacon, which were slabs of bacon that you were supposed to stick into the toaster, which actually did come in Pop-Tart style foil packages that were lined with paper to absorb the grease.

So you just dropped the whole package into the toaster. Any tears in the foil would leak grease down onto the heating element though so you can see why this didn't actually work as a product.

Before the microwave really started catching on in home kitchens in the mid '70s, there were a bunch of attempts at toaster friendly food products. Most of them didn't catch on.

As a side note, before they became small enough to fit on your average countertop and mass produced enough to be cheap enough for your average home owner, microwaves were considered luxury replacements for ovens rather than a separate appliance to quickly make foods; the whole reason you can set a microwave oven to 99:59 is so you could use it for, say, a turkey or ham.

That too. And also seeing that one comic artist's ghost and then finding out he's actually alive. It just seemed like a lot of crazy contradictions escalated in the later part of the 2010s and onwards. Even Darin and Pete going to the Flash Museum might be one since the curator there is the same from the Flash comics
>>
>>151589468
And what I mean is like we know Flash exists as a comic book character; Dinkle gives Clinton a box of comics including Flash and Mystery in Space, in this very thread. The curator of the Flash Museum being real implies the Flash is a real person. But then again with the Dick Tracy connection that might be possible because of that comic's implied Batman connection

What does and doesn't have consequences is up to Batiuk's whims. With its use in the later story, I suspect it was because he wrote himself into a corner and didn't actually know how to resolve it so it became a deus ex machina.

I'd believe it. I also did find out that in the Jerry Lewis comics, the DC characters including Batman and Robin are real people, AND the 1966 Batman show exists in-universe which is how Jerry Lewis (and likely everyone else) knows Batman is Bruce Wayne

The Jerry Lewis comics got grouped in with Bob Hope comics, 60s Inferior Five, and the 60s Plastic Man on Earth-Twelve so I'm gonna start believing that the Funkyverse is the post-COIE altered version of the original Earth-Twelve

One of the things is that once Batiuk is able to get his buffer going, topical stuff like this isn't going to be as much of a thing because he's writing a year ahead. This also means that by the time he does address something, when he does, it's basically a year too late.

Apologies for the low quality first strip. GoComics, for whatever reason, doesn't have the 8/1/94 strip but Batiuk did have a version of it on his blog when talking about Chuck Ayers taking over as artist so I just grabbed that.

Also, considering it's the strip he uses and says it was a Susan strip that was the first, I'm reasonably confident in saying that this is when Ayers took over pencil duties from Batiuk leaving Batiuk only to write and ink. This is what allowed him to start getting the long buffer going and also, likely, was a major contributing factor into moving defintively away from being a gag strip to longer plots. Because while these first few years are relatively light, starting next year we'll be getting longer, way more involved storylines.

Doesn't help either that we see plenty of other people treating Les the same way as Bull and usually with less provocation (though Les was often a jerk or outright creep) while there isn't really anything that shows Bull as being a bully to anybody else.

If Bull had had a habit of picking on, say. Crazy Harry, for instance, or Barry as well as his problems with Les, that might have been different.

Two major debuts in this week: Becky Blackburn and her mother Roberta. Becky will go on to be a major character and involved in some of the most dramatic stories though it'll take a while for her to get there. At first, she mostly seems to be just an accessory for her mother who initially seemed to exist to give Dinkle a foil. But once it's decided for her to be Wally's love interest, she winds up eclipsing her mother in importance.

Roberta, as said, starts out as a foil to Dinkle but will basically be tied with Darin's bio-dad Frankie as one of the biggest antagonists in the strip with her being used as the representative of the reactionary moral guardians that Batiuk dislikes, especially when it comes to literary censorship.

The first of many, many flashbacks to the teen pregnancy story. Lisa really is an entirely different character than she was back in Act I and it would have been nice, in hindsight, if her changes were actually shown.

Anyway, that does it for 1994. Next time is 1995 where Susan will fall in love while Les has to deal with the first of Roberta's many moral crusades when the poetry club's literary magazine stirs up controversy. These and other stories will be tied into the big one running throughout most of the year: Les's relationship to Lisa and his attempts to propose to her.

We'll also see the debut of another mainstay character in comic shop owner John Howard.

Yeah, I left it there for knowers.
>>
>>151581742
I wonder if Batiuk kept some sort of record of which characters he had and what they had gotten up to, I imagine he did but maybe he just decided to drop her.
>>
>>151581763
This isn't funny it just feels sad and, dare I say it, 'mean spirited'.
>>
>>151597482
It's definitely annoying because everyone treats it as they lost and not like it seemingly being rigged. More like Big Fraudnut Tech.
>>
>>151585605
good to know since I was thinking about going back sometime after the storytime to check out the days from the early 70s that were unavailable

What do you mean consequences?

>>151582086
So where did Crazy Harry go?

I used to live near Naples, makes me want to go back.

>The last strip
That one made me giggle.
>>
>>151582355
Is that Dinkle with sunglasses in the title card?
>>
>>151595777
The art's pretty good in the first strip, at ast
>>
>>151582418
Even heroes like Dinkle are still mortal.
>>
>>151597954
>>151582443
Oh, that's him? Good to know he's got work.
>>
>>151582487
Barry Balderman, the overachiever, got a job as a truck driver? Man that freakout he had at the end of Act I really must have done a number on him.
>>
>>151582518
You know, I'm wondering if Les was an inspiration for Milhouse from The Simpsons, they almost feel like the same character except Milhouse is somehow more pathetic.
>>
>>151596061
Is there a name for the Summers hairstyle?
>>
>>151582709
I agree with the other anon, Wally is a decent character who isn't a complete wet tissue like Les.
>>
>>151582731
Kek
>>
>>151582783
Is that Woody Allen in the last strip? Also concurring with what the other anon said, Dinkle's great not just because he's funny but because he's competent, not so competent that it gets boring but you like to see him succeed yet still remain autstically devoted to a very mundane job. In fact now I think about it that's a similar reason why I like Hank Hill.
>>
>>151582783
>>151598557
Huh, I guess it is Woody Allen, I didn't know he played clarinet.

Haven't had one of these in a while.
>>
>>151582860
Poor Tony
>>
>>151582908
Kek at that last strip, and aye, the misery of Stropp fits with the melancholy tone the comic is taking. However Dinkle is that little oasis of whimsy and I like him for that.
>>
>>151598343
I would doubt it. But him and Groening are similar in age (though Batiuk's a little older) so I would bet that they were coming at it from the same perspective of taking a stock character and just amplifying those traits to make them more absurd and thus funny.

>>151598407
The pointy perm?
>>
>>151582928
So will there be a follow-up to this? This feels like a set-up for a week of antics but nothing happened.
>>151583123
>>151583134
Merry Christmas Mr Dinkle.
>>
>>151597078
Bull and Stropp really like True Lies
They're probably in Heaven watching Cameronkino now
>>
>>151598299
Yeah reading these now I feel like the only friend he probably had was Bodean.
>>
>>151599229
Darn I got them mixed up. Sorry I’m terrible at names.
>>
>>151598447
I think the interesting thing is that you think he is going to be completely like Les at the start (going by how he got treated at band camp or in the locker room), but somehow manage to not be a wet tissue and assert himself a little over time. He had one of the most insane lives of all the characters and I think that's why Batiuk doesn't do much with Wally after he gets married; because Wally's life was fucked later on in a non-comedic way several times--like he technically fucked up his girlfriend's life, he was presumed KIA twice, I think--and it comes off bad if Batiuk kept dumping on him
>>
>>151599326
Huh? No, Barry is overachiever who became the truck driver. I mean like several threads ago we see it seems like the only guy he seemed friends with was Bodean. Come to think of it I don't know if he even appears in the comic after Act 1.
>>
>>151599372
Oh good I’m not going senile, I just find it hard to keep track of all these names especially when characters come and go. Still, to bring it back to it does seem like a strange trajectory for Barry to take. Does he appear in later acts?
>>
>>151599350
His story effectively ended when he marries Rachel because I would guess at that point there wasn't much more dramatics left to wring out of him. But that also happened around the time the focus of the strip basically switched largely to Les, the Hollywood crew (Mason, Cindy and Marianne) and the comic people for the last few years to the detriment of most other characters.
>>
>>151599413
He gets a couple of small appearances but nothing like he had in Act I.
>>
>>151596710
wow, I love the 4th strip "flashback", very creative. this series is so simple that when something like this comes up it's much more impactful.

>>151596901
the owner of the former pub?

No but you're close. Physically close.
>>
>>151600211
hmmm, something to do with the blue nile coffee house? or the guy changing the plaque? I dunno.
>>
>>151600013
IIRC he does use/reference that comic again somewhere in Act 3
>>
>>151596225
Looking at the strips following this one (and even including this one) and maybe I haven't actually been paying that much attention to the art, but you can tell the difference, as Ayers art feels more dynamic, I guess you could say. Like Batiuk's art usually feels flat, but there seems to be more angles/detail in the later ones. And it's a win-win since Batiuk could focus more on inking/writing.
>>
>>151600488
Maybe it could just be the inking but I thinm Ayers uses thicker lines too.
>>
>>151600296
First strip, second panel, right underneath the word balloon
>>
>>151595861
luckily school shootings are always topical
>>
>>151599413
I dunno, qeing a truck driver for awhile feels like a way for Barry to get away from being an overachiver after his breakdown. He gets to have a lot of time to think+reevaluate his life, make some money, and to get away from his parents for awhile. Kind of like Hachiken or his older brother from Silver Spoon

I forgot that store was right next to them before it moved upstairs

The last two panels would have landed better if Tom just called it 'America's Funniest Home Videos', 'Scariest Home Videos' already implies that the videos in question would be uncomfortable viewing.

Women and shoes amirite?

>>151596225
Something I’ve wondered, how come newspaper comic strips can get away with not crediting new artists? Even if they agree to a deal where they don’t receive royalties (which I presume they must) not crediting them AT ALL seems like a recipe for disaster if there was ever a legal dispute over who did what. Like if your name doesn’t appear attached to the published version of your artwork, how do you prove you drew it at all?
>>
>>151595444
This week made me smile.

Kek
>>
>>151605120
You generally get paid for doing it and I presume the cartoonist vouches for you
I think the expectation was that you'd go into another career or do your own comic strip after doing it for a while (ie Jim Davis assisted on another comic long before he did Garfield)

>>151595705
>>151595715
This has been a funny week.
>>151595750
>>151595777
Oh, here's the drama. It is kind of interesting how the comic has started to depict the school as much seedier. When did Batiuk leave his job as a teacher? Because I wonder if his perception of high school changed after he stopped, and if this darker take on Westview High is due to him either venting contemporary concerns he felt (back in the '70s) but didn't fit in with the tone of the strip at the time, or if it's him reading the news and thinking 'man, things were much better in my day'?

Also I'm now remidned of that schlock movie 'Class of 1984', though Westview is no-where near as bad.

>>151605292
Also now I think about it, the protagonist of that movie was the music teacher, i.e. the same as our Mr Dinkle, who is also the most powerful character who kills all the troublesome students and gets acquitted because there were no witnesses, just saying, never underestimate these guys.
>>
>>151595491
>that last strip
brutal

Sandals (or flip flops) you wear in the shower, it's usually something I do at the gym because you don't know how clean those floors are.
>>
>>151606006
huh. never thought about differentiating a flip flop between shower-only and normal use.

Batiuk has a website, it looks like he blogs a lot

I just wear my crocs in the shower. that way I always have clean shoes too
>>
>>151605120
The weird thing is that Ayers was always credited on Crankshafft, same with Tom Armstrong and Gerry Shamray on John Darling. It was only on Funky where other artists aren't credited (Shamray penciled a few weeks in the '80s prior to Darling, I think around the time where Noah Vale was railing against video games) until Rick Burchett took over pencils for a while in 2017. At that point it starts being credited to Batiuk and him, then Ayers gets his credit once he comes back.
>>
>>151605600
It's a reference to the Ford Bronco chase, OJ's friend was driving and OJ was in the car threatening to kill himself or something while a bunch of police cars were chasing them
>>
>>151610453
Wait, Rick Burchett drew the comic? I remember him from like 90s DCAU Batman comics and Dan Slott's She-Hulk
>>
>>151606923
I was miffed when mine wasn’t a Dinkle
>>
>>151611856
Don't worry I don't get Dinkles either.
>>
>>151608997
I've only ever used flip flops when in a public shower. why would you use it in your own home?
>>
>>151612034
It depends on what sort of floors you have and where the shower is, maybe you don't wear them in the shower but when you get out and you don't want to get wet feet on your carpet when you go to the bedroom.
