I think what particularly got to me about the other scene though was Lacey's sad, delusional desperation of wanting her friend back who (given the hints about Maisie) seems to have been the only real ray of sunshine in her life. You know Jay can't be fixed and in her moments of clarity so does Lacey, but if she faces that she's also acknowledging the fact her and Maisie are now alone with their misery. Maybe it's not that spooky, but it is maybe the most existentially terrifying for her.

People can say it's all fiction and that they don't really feel for either. But I've seen people say they feel for Rocio and treat Lacey as a fictional expression of Rocio's torment and I've seen others treat it as though Rocio is being cruel by making Lacey go through these experiences as though she were also real and an innocent victim of Rocio's malice.There's a kind of empathy inception going on here and it's funny that the only other thing I can think of that did something like that is fucking Last Action Hero.
