Imagine looking back at your old work as something that needs to be course-corrected like this, while simultaneously lacking the ability to surpass or even approach its qualities. These "patches" that you're desperately trying to apply to a work that will be forever associated with you go largely ignored. Like you just want to reach back into the past and patronizingly waggle your finger at the person you were before, but it'll never work because your unrefined, rough younger self was infinitely more talented than you will ever be again, so you're doomed to observe from the outside as everyone reveres his work, unfiltered and without your approval. >>151663750Not to mention it goes against Iroh's character, who never tried to act like he was a saint. The man was once one of the most feared generals in the Fire Nation army and only stopped being such a force when he lost his son and realized how precious life was. But even with his change, he was still capable of mistakes. He recognized Azula was evil and probably not worth trying to redeem, same with his brother. He wasn't above some acts of desperation to survive, only really trying to stop Zuko from engaging in such acts because he didn't want his nephew to fall into bad habits. That bit from the comic just feels like idiotic pandering. That somehow him having a crush on a woman and being a little flirty with her was somehow an insult to her when in the episode of the show he did nothing but praise her skills and let her take charge since she knew what she was doing as a bounty hunter.

>>151663750I’ve always believed that Korra was originally pitched as a different ip from Avatar, (building upon Bryke’s sci-fi ideas they wanted to explore in the earliest drafts of ATLA) but could only get Nickelodeon to greenlight a new show if it was connected to ATLA. Once you understand this, it becomes clear why LOK felt so different and why such little care has been taken in governing ATLA’s canon past Book 3. It’s because Bryke don’t actually care about the ip anymore and are desperately trying to escape their own shadow but aren’t allowed to since Nick isn’t interested in their new ideas if they can’t be marketed under the ATLA brand. Seven Havens soft-rebooting the entire setting is yet more evidence of this
