But one is made by Michael Cusack and the other by a literally who jewtube influencer. I don't understand why it seems the most vocal detractors to this show are Smiling Friends fans when I would argue the two shows have surprisingly similar senses of humor. Whenever I speak with people online about SF I usually hear from most that the "awkward, real conversation and argument" bits are one of their favorite parts of the show, another is the small details and signature repeat gags of the creators. I may as well have described Haha, You Clowns's appeal there. I think what flies over most people's heads is the difference in approach. Zach and Michael hold up a fun house mirror to day to day mundanity and motions we go through, Joe holds up a slightly warbled mirror. Where Zach and Michael have the "erms", random screams, and jarringly normal breaks in scenes, Joe has characters snapping their fingers or doing some other common fiddling people do in bog standard canned conversation, the boys randomly getting aggressive and confrontational, and scenes jarringly being interrupted by the characters getting red eyes and emotional with accompanying sad piano. I also don't understand the argument that its style is off-putting when another common joke in Smiling Friends are visual gags just like that. I think they'd like it if they gave it a chance honestly.

The humor coming from the idiosyncrasies of the characters, combined with the sitcom atmosphere and awkward attention-to-detail makes the dry humor hit much harder. I don't want to sound pretentious by insisting that the show is inherently "smarter" because I don't think that's necessarily the case, but the average viewer is going to have different expectations when it comes to adult comedy. I think even the people who genuinely believe the show is much smarter with it's humor are setting themselves up to be disappointed, because a lot of those people seem to have this idea that's it's supposed to be some kind of deconstruction. While it certainly could go that route a bit later on, especially with a stronger incorporation of the supernatural elements and the character flaws we've seen, I don't expect it to depart very far from the current premise. I like it chiefly because it's fairly refreshing, and almost nostalgic with it's approach. It reminds me a lot classic AS, or Mike Judge's work since he tends to focus on "people", and people are inherently funny. That much has manifested even in shows like smiling friends, where it demonstrates this through the "realistic" dialogue, something which you mentioned both shows share.

Joe cappa wanted a show that intentionally veered away from cynical humor. The dad is strongly inspired by his irl dad, who he said acts similarly, and I wouldn't be surprised if the same went for the brothers considering his actual brother has worked on a few episodes.It's not trying to make fun of WASPy suburbia, but as it turns out that setting is a great vehicle for the kind of jokes the show wants to tell.
