Was it kino
>>151629476Yes
>>151629476Of course Disney puts in no effort into one of their properties that warrants a revival.
>>151629476Why does Disney never use Oswald anymore
>>151629476I liked the concept art more than the finished product
>>151629476ehthe way the darker and moodier aesthetic of the first game was dropped here really killed it, not to mention the tacked on cpu oswald gimmick and generally how much less interesting it was on the whole
Epic Mickey is the series that no one likes for the gameplay itself since (especially in the second one) it is shit People are into the characters, their personalities, the story and slightly edgy world around it. That is pretty much the entire appeal of Epic Mickey
>>151634827>Epic Mickey is the series that no one likes for the gameplay itself since (especially in the second one) it is shitIts not shit, its just painfully average. Platforming is very simplistic and the only gimmick is just painting in new platforms or erasing walls.
>>151629476i liked the first one a lot more after finally finishing it with rebrushed but the 2nd is just alright, all these multiplayer puzzles are a chore to get through with the shitty ai oswald has
>>151629476EPI2 MI2KEY 2THE POWER OF TWO(2)
>>151629476No, it wasn't as good as the first one. We'll never get an Epic Mickey 3.
>>151629476Never got to finish it because I rented it from Blockbuster, but yes. Epic Mickey is kino in general. Sad that it’s not getting more sequels. That Donald Duck spin-off seemed interesting
>>151629476It was definitely Epic
i played the demo of the first game remasterit was boring shit but the world looked cool i guess
>>151633210What's the point? No one knows him and no one actually cares. Animation nerds know him as a fun fact trivia but he has no value as an IP. If Disney were to put him up for sale, there'd be no serious offers for the rights from any company.
>>151635779>sclera kill it with fire
>>151629476The last time poor Oswald's ever been acknowledged by the company...
>>151637784I think Epic Donald was supposed to follow Ducktales art style
>>151629476I truly believe wiping Sora and the rest of the anime characters and then combining Epic Mickey and Kingdom Hearts lore would make for a vastly superior series than both.
>>151633210They are making a miniseries on Disney+ for his 100thBig one too with Favreau directing
>>151638935Nah that should be its own thing. The appeal of these games was the love it had for the forgotten characters and history of classic Disney. Also the choice between redeeming and destroying the world was fun
>>151638947>Favreau directing
>>151640024I hear his Jungle Book movie was good
Mickey is awesome
>>151641852said no one ever
>>151640936It completely misses the point of the animated movie it was meant to adapt.
>>151633215for power of two?
>>151637077He's cute, it's unfair such an adorable character has been sidelined
>>151629476The original is really really good, the sequel was pretty lackluster and worse in every way
>>151629476>mfw I worked on this gameIf the thread's still up tomorrow I might post more, idk
>>151645359Post now.
>>151645359What else have you worked on and what did you do for this?
The concept art overhyped the series.
>>151642846Not even the biggest Mickey Mouse hater can say that with a straight face
>>151645359Based, what was the production process like?Any neat stories or tidbits to share?
>>151645537>>151645546>>151646661If the thread makes it through the night I'll post in the morning when I'm getting coffee before starting my workday. But if it dies, it dies.
>>151645359Why did it fail so hard? Why did the production studio shut down? Was Warren Specter a moron? Why even make a sequal when the first one was perfect? Why make it about machines? Why did you people think The Mad Doctor returning was a good idea? Will there ever be another game? A three or just a reboot or pretending loke two never existed? Why is Disney afraid of using Oswald in anything else? Will he always be voiced by Frank Welkner? Is that his iconic voice like Mickey that other voice actors will have to imitate?
>>151645547The worx stuff seems like overkill.
>>151629476Yes, very much so!
>>151635779Disney seem to be really reluctant to give Donald new games
>>151647159Not him but the series just suffered from being a bit underwhelming after the initial concept art. The terrible camera stopped the first game from being a genuine classic in isolation and it never recovered.Probably should've taken a bit more inspiration from Travellers Tales and how they get their games accessible to pretty much every age range too.
>>151647130>But if it dies, it diesChanneling your inner Dolph Lundgren.
>>151629476>Let's do a musical, but make most of the songs be sung by one dude in an obnoxious voice>Pointless co-op>Camera is still shit>Pins are still kind of pointless to collectIt's rather shocking that almost none of the issues with the first one were addressed. If they decide to make more games, I kind of hope they jump straight to 3 instead of trying to remaster this one. Fucking nothing happens in it.
>>151640024Look I know no one is going to like anyone to make it unless it’s some 90s CN animator directing but if this is not scrapped you cannot say they do nothing with OswaldUnless he got a theatrical film that’s as big of a new media release a Disney character can get
>>151645359That's bullshit but I believe it
>>151645359Heh, whatever you say, "insider."
The first game would've been better if they kept thinner mickey
Epic
Here's a good video of what happened behind the scenes for it and the studiohttps://youtu.be/50doEJYcwv8?si=W_yXR2FgWhHT5Ht2
>>151629476It was EPIC
>>151650380True, there should’ve been more incentive to go the thinner route. Like turning Mickey into some kinda crackhead blot version
>>151648301That was the intent. Gimme a min to get settled and I'll start replying.
>>151645546I was on the art team and I do 3D art, mostly for environments. I've been in game development for too long, now that I think about it.>>151646661>what was the production process likePretty standard for gamedev at the time. Agile sprints, but an overall waterfall schedule. Things got made in layers, so it wasn't 'finish this one level to 100% before starting the other.'>any tidbits to shareYeah, it was a fucking mess and we were all working 14 to 18 hours days for half a year to get this thing out the door. Content was getting cut or added left or right, a bunch of the execs had no fucking idea what they were doing so people were always leaving, and Disney's entire video game division was under the gun because they only ever lost money and those chickens were coming home to roost.>>151647159>why did it fail, why did the studio get shut downIt would've been fine if our development costs were lower, but the game took too long to make to ever hope to get its cash back. And 'broken Disney' is a niche thing anyway that's more hardcore Disney fan targeted than kid targeted. And the game was just mediocre to play. It was obvious for almost a year that Disney was going to close our studio if the game flopped, so only delusional people didn't have jobs lined up for after the game was done.>was Warren a moronNo, the opposite. He's super smart and really nice, but he has a hard time knowing when he's being conned by a lot of the slimy fucks we had working there. Oswald was to him what Mickey was to Walt.>why machines, why the Mad DoctorBecause they tied thematically to each other, and robots and shit are usually easier and safer to make as the bad guys instead of other animals, especially for a kids game.>will there ever be another gameProbably some mobileslop when Disney remebers they have the license and can farm it out to someone
>>151650411>https://youtu.be/50doEJYcwv8?si=W_yXR2FgWhHT5Ht2Good vid. Accurate, too. Disney corporate goons, esp. that dickhead John Pleasance, really fucked us and robbed people of getting a properly good game.
>>151648492When I heard there was going to be musical elements I would think on how they were going to pull it off or if it would be certain levels and the music would change defending on you're choice of using paint or thinner during it.Then when I played it and it was just cutscenes I was disappointed Also I felt they should have leaned more into using more forgotten characters and Disney media really feel they started moving away from that Especially with Pete being set up as the main bad guy in 3
>>151629476They made TWO games?
>>151652681>will there ever be another game>Probably some mobileslop when Disney remebers they have the license and can farm it out to someoneSo them doing another take on the canceled epic history mobile game they were doing https://epicmickey.fandom.com/wiki/Epic_History
>>151629476Played the first game and found it pretty tedious honestly
>>151629476One of the few good things attached to the Wii U
>>151656200Was Epic Mickey on Wii U? I thought it was just on the Wii.
>>151652681> Oswald was to him what Mickey was to Walt.It really showed in his work, and it was contagious to those who liked the game. What a damn shame it didn’t take off, but at least it has a cult following that will keep it alive. It had so much heart man
>>151653452Respect to Bo Iger for getting the rights back for Oswald tho
>>151656718I mean spector in the 80s worked on the toon rpg so it definitely shows his love
>>151656758Iger might be a shitbag that eventually ruined Disney, but he did one thing by trading Al Michaels for Oswald, lol.
>>151656200It ran worse on the wii u too.
>>151657901Lol ignore what I said then
>>151629476Anyone else surprised this thread is still here? Normally Mickey Mouse threads die quite quickly. And Epic Mickey ones tend to fizzle out faster. Even by the slowness of this board its impressive this thread is still here.Real shame the big reason Epic Mickey failed is because people simply don't care about Mickey Mouse. People barely tolerate Mickey Mouse showing up in cut scenes for Kingdom Hearts and in there he doesn't truly do much generally. So a full game of Mickey himself was bound to fail. In fact the latest illusion game that included Donald and Goofy also failed granted it failed because the art style was ugly compared to the classic Sega illusion games.Anyways shame how a once well known character became dismissed.
>>151654717Thee if you include the Nintendo 3DS side game Power of illusion. It's not considered canon as it does it's own thing. And if you ask me it's better for it. Mickey exploring famous Disney levels and meeting the heroes and villains there trying to beat the old witch Mizrabel is more engaging than what happens in the console games.
>>151656758He only did that to impress Roy Disney Junior himself before Roy Disney Junior died. Now that he has died Iger has no more Disney Family Members watching him like a watchdog. So now Disney can truly commit to suicide completely.Oh sure you will successes like Moana 2 and Zootopia 2 but Disney is rotting and decaying internally. Disney as a company had a good run, but you simply can't win against Jews. Shitty Jews are just shitty.
>>151659162Mickey became more of a logo than a real character. Classic Mickey back when he was more of a trickster would make a good protagonist for a platformer. He’d be like a more mischievous Mario. But the game has to actually be fun to play. Epic Mickey was clunky unfortunately
>>151659242Is this our last hope before Disney gives up on cartoons entirely? The depressing part is I don’t think kids will give a single shit about it. They already have TikTok and Fortnite as instant boredom busters
>>151659162Epic gives Mickey a fandom I think actually appreciates him. I notice his reputation is far more positive in that fandom when elsewhere it is in the dumpster, and people are interested in him as a character when he is duoed with OswaldIn some ways it feels like people make Oswald the main character associated with Epic Mickey, even if it is obvious Mickey is the main character and his name is even on the damn thing. But it still feels like Oswald’s series
>>151659947He’s the Vegeta to Mickey’s Goku
>>151660143PERFECT description!
>>151659162>>151652681Plus it's based off the Disney Parks, an even more niche fandom besides the Disney Adults.
>>151633215They really did pull their punches (either the developers or exec mandate) on Epic Mickey. Maybe not fully into the horror stuff, but they could have split the difference.
>>151662083Eh, it's Disney. I'll take what I can get.
Epic Mickey 3: The Power Of Many
>>151650380What was the specific story they had on why they removed it again, that on a focus test a gruff biker type guy started weeping "what are they doing to Mickey??"
>>151629476Will Disney every let Oswald into Kingdon Hearts? Nomura wanted to use him in 3 for an unknown reason and he was denied. What's their problem?
>>151663600Disney fucked Nomura over in KH3, brought in massive restrictions really late on (which is why the Frozen world is so odd, originally the ice maze was going to be made by Elsa and she was more involved).Conversely, Pixar were really good, Nomura was expecting to do story retells but Pixar were really keen to do original stories and to integrate the characters better into the stories which is why you got that scene with Woody laying into young Xehanort.
>>151663600Always heard that rumor they did not want Oswald to become more popular then their mascot and were worried a KH appearance would do it, do not know if that is legit Might have also been they did not want KH to define him when they had other project ideas like the scrapped Disney+ show. They do that often if new media is coming out (for example Disney rejected Rescue Rangers being in Ducktales because of the film plans, so they snuck the characters in with that one scene far enough in the process that it was too late to change it)
>>151662083>exec mandateIt was this. If you want to use any existing or previous Disney park thing (a ride, a show, a place), you need approval from Imagineering/Parks Leadership. If you want to use Mickey, Donald, Daisy, Minnie, or Goofy, you need to approval from some brand protection exec committee in Disney HQ.It's like that old Runaway Brain short that somehow slipped through the cracks but Disney execs fucking hated it for showing Mickey as 'evil'
>>151666473This is just a Mickey thing too, not the others. Which is how they became more liked then MickeyOne example is during the Disney Afternoon era there were talks after giving Goofy, Donald, Chip n Dale shows that one for Mickey should be looked at. As soon as the idea was brought up many departments immediately sprang in try and give restrictions or requirements that their department wanted for it, so much that the idea of doing one was immediately scrapped since it would be borderline impossible to do so
I actually like the first game. Just replayed the remake a few weeks ago. It’s not the most amazing game out there, but I think the concept and story are so good that I can put up with its flaws. And even then, the remake fixes a lot of its problems, I still really like it.Never played 2 or the 3DS one, maybe I will. I remember being so disappointed when people said 2 was bad. I guess at this point I might as well give them a chance just to see what they have to offer.
>>151665396Isn’t it a good thing if you can get a character to become even more popular than your mascot? Just make the new character your new mascot then, now you have 2 popular characters. I hate suits with a passion
>>151667663>this is just a Mickey thingNo, it isn't. (I'm the 'I worked on EM2' anon.) Disney treats that group of characters I mentioned as 'The Fabulous Five' and they all receive special handling. Mickey receives the most scrutiny of course, but they're still in a special class.
nauseating frame rate
>>151667663If I remember Evanier's blogpost right, it wasn't even "after giving Goofy, Donald" etc shows- it was at the same time as when they decided to do Ducktales to begin
>>151659549I am worried they are going to try to change his personality to be happy go luckyThey nailed the good-hearted but bitter and easily annoyed characterization that he has and I do not want them changing it in a way that is going to be seen as the definite characterization in the future
>>151663600My guess is that instead of Chirithy who's there for Sora in The Final World, Nomura wanted it to be Oswald instead.
>>151671071Better keep a paper bag handy anytime you play then
>>151647629>Nu-Ducktales
>>151635779>>151638916Epic Donald was supposed to be a combination of Carl Barks and other Donald Duck comics with the OG Ducktales and attract a lot of players to that material. Even the basis of those plans were based on the Donald Duck comics. It was a really great idea, unfortunately Disney canceled it, mainly due to the unpopularity of Epic Mickey 2.
>>151669075>Disney treats that group of characters I mentioned as 'The Fabulous Five' and they all receive special handlingYeah as expected there are standard guidelines to using the characters, but they are entirely different levels because they let the others appear in content and often allow rowdier things to happen with them, while Mickey is not allowed to actually be in stuff.Another example is Ducktales 17, where Donald was obviously a main character, Goofy was allowed as a cameo and be in promotional material. But they had a whole setup of Mickey appearing as Donald's college roommate who became very successful, and even with that positive interpretation not only were they forbidden from using him they could not even mention his name in passing. Enough they made reference to missing Mickey in the show with a stand-in object since he was a clear omission. Mickey is the only one to have these restrictions and it has damaged the reputation of the character
>>151654717They sure did
>>151675941>Ducktales 17, where Donald was obviously a main characterI agree with everything except this. Donald is more of a supporting character than a main character in DT17. Although Mickey appeared as a watermelon and Donald supposedly imitated him.
>>151631412Yeah?
>>151678020Yeah
>>151675621>NOT Ducktales>DuckTales was based loosley on>No similarity with new "DuckTales"So what name does it have? What is it?
>>151629476mouse > rabbit
Is rebrushed still badly optimized
>>151680462It seems like there’s not much difference until you go back to the old game and realize how bad the controls were. It’s much more playable, and has a double jump + dash which makes it feel less sluggish. I think they should ramp up the mobility a bit more in a sequel, like in Mario Odyssey
>>151679661This is funny with how unpopular Mickey is overall
