At least starting im season 2. The plan probably was to eventually have Fionna and Cake stand completely on its own without using characters from Ooo. The problem is they completely suck at making anything that isn't Adventure Time. That's been one of the most frustrating parts about this season, the stuff with HW and Ooo are geniunely good. It shows that when the ly focus on HW and Ooo they can still write good stuff. They still have a knack for writing over the top characters and making you care about them and they still have a lot of lore to dig into. But Fionna doesn't have any of that by design. It would not surprise me if they decided to do this as some sort of writing challenge to create a world not reliant traditional AT style, lore or it's general insanity. Season 1 was fan service, a chance to do some stuff they couldn't do in the original runSeason 2 is experimentation. It's them trying to find an identity for the spin off. To find a voice and style all it's own that isn't overshadowed by Adventure Time and they don't really know how to do that. Honestly the best step forward to me is just continue Adventure Time. Season 11 with the occasional Fionna and Cake segmemts

I think the issue here is the OG Adventure Time never really had an overarching plot. Storylines and plot threads, sure, but there was not a central long term crisis that needed to be solved. F&C on the other hand, is very plot focused and has a ticking clock, which the slice of life stuff is disconnected from. It also helped that AT's SOL stuff was shit like "Marcy is bored and helps LSP get petty revenge against Breakfast Princess for yucks.". In F&C, the SOL stuff is "Fionna, honey. He's a mediocre bitch. Why the FUCK are you simping this hard?". The new SOL stuff is actively frustrating.

The main issue here is that the show pretty explicitly knows that the Sweet Spot plot is not enough to carry the season, so it has to share space with an entirely unrelated plot, the Finn-HW stuff and the issue there is that the people of that plot have nothing to do and dont care about the people of the Sweet Spot plot so we have two parallel plots constantly getting in the way of each other competing for screentime. The season should have committed to a single overarching plot and it seems pretty obvious that the Finn-HW stuff is just much more interesting.Ultimately, the problem with F&C goes back to their episodes in AT. What is the point of F&C? Originally it was a non-serious parody of fanfiction. Now, the writers want us to take the F&C world and characters seriously but so far it doesnt seem there is anything to these characters other than being genderbent versions of better characters. The only reason why we find Marshall Lee's history compelling is because it is similar to Marceline's history. The only reason we like Fionna is because she is a Finn. This show has to show that these are interesting characters on their own and so far, the only interesting thing here has nothing to do with F&C or any other character of their world.

I'm realizing that 'having to find a cure for Finn' was probably not the best story to write a whole season around.They essentially wrote a problem that has a seemingly very simple and straightforward solution: Find the Heart of the Forest.PB, Simon and Marcy aren't given anything to do since only Huntress knows about the Heart of the Forest, so all of their scenes are basically just gags about them failling to help Finn, mixed with lazy fanservice.Then at the same time, they have to constantly make up a bunch of reasons for why Huntress Wizard herself can't find the Heart either.>hey, she just got blown up>now she's stuck in a plant pot for two episodes>now she's a little gremlin creature >now she's getting sidetracked because she has to help Fionna with her lame problemsI guess they could've wrote it so they have to hop around multiple universes to find a cure, because every time they find the Heart of the Forest, it's not the right one for [insert reason]. Sure, it would've basically been a rehash of what they did with the Ice Crown in season 1, but it would've still been better than this boring ass season where nothing is ever achieved by the end of the episode.
