Why did critics portray this scene so dishonestly in their reviews?

Professional critics have always looked down on capeshit, and Eternals came out at the height of Martin Scorsese’s “capeshit isn’t cinema” discourse, which got many critics even more riled up. Add to that the fact Eternals was a genuine attempt at arthouse cinema that bucked under the pressure of the genre’s blockbuster trappings, and the blowback was inevitable. They just zeroed in on this scene because it allowed them to shit on the movie from a perceived moral high ground that it was making light of the tragedy of Hiroshima (nevermind the fact one of the X-Men movies literally had Wolverine in Nagasaki when the bomb dropped).

Same reason they problematized the “adult stuck in a child’s body” character which is one of the oldest sci-fi tropes.

I haven’t seen the movie but something movie apologists (see snydercult) don’t understand is that execution is way more important than intent. Like the Martha scene in Batman v Superman. Yes, everyone knows what the intent was but the execution was one of the silliest moments in movie history

This movie takes itself too seriously and lacks confidence at the same time.

Watch it again: it feels like a Marvel parody of a DC movie (and I mean that current DC style, post-Snyder DCEU) more than anything else.
>>

Oh look, is the retard seething about Snyder again.

>Like it was a travesty and a deliberate insult to the victims to feature Hiroshima in a superhero movie.

Lets consider an hypothetical.
Lets hypothetically make a movie in which Joker carries out 9/11.
The joker laughs as he orchestrates 9/11 and taunts Batman about it. Afterwards Batman punches him and sends him to Arkham Asylum. End of movie.

Do YOU think this could be seen as a cheap exploitation of a real life tragedy for the sake of shock value in a stupid superhero movie?

At best it is just stupid, but it could very well be interpreted as needlessly exploitative.

> Comicbook movie shows Hiroshima.
> Auteur Christopher Nolan pussies out of showing it to coddle US audiences.

Really makes your cogs rotate.
>>
>>151645355
> There is a refreshing lack of quipping.
> There is no Whedonesque winking at the camera; it takes itself seriously, which requires real guts creatively. (Deadpool & Wolverine takes the cowardly approach by handwaving everything as a joke).
> It actually looks cinematic.
> Makkari is easily the best depiction of speed powers in cinema.
> Kingo staying out of the conflict broke with capeshit cliche, which was refreshing.
> Has a great music score.

It's a deeply flawed movie (too many characters, making the deviants generic monsters, poor pacing), but Chloe Zhao was at least attempting to do something ambitious.
>>
>>151646643
Taking things seriously requires more courage and takes much greater skill to pull off.

Anyone can make a tongue in cheek "lol look how silly this is" movie and use that to get away with lazy slop. Post-modernism is fucking cancer.

Those points just make it sound like a regular movie before the MCU turned everything into assembly line slop. Art house would mean it was just about two lesbians at a coffee shop or diner talking about their vaginas.

Reminder the Academy Awards went out of it's way to not only nominate it for best picture, but they invented a brand new Oscar category called “Outstanding Achievement in Popular Film” with the intent of having Black Panther win it.

But people complained that wasn't good enough for Black Panther; it should win best picture period. Then of course they got all pissed when "Marvelslop but with Africans" didn't automatically win just because it had black people in it.

>The reasoning for the delay is obvious. Chadwick Boseman came right out and stated last week that Black Panther both was campaigning for and was artistically worthy of a Best Picture nomination as opposed to being the frontrunner for the “Outstanding Achievement in Popular Film” category. When the folks associated with the movie most likely to win your new award — a film from the studio seemingly intended to benefit from the new award — come out and state that they don’t want it, that’s not a good start for your new ratings-driven award.

Eternals was undeniably aiming to be more artistic and prestige than the usual Marvel fare, it just failed to achieve that goal.
>>
>>151651632
Has anything ever come out saying how that happened? My biggest bitch with MCU stuff is that they just grab Rick and Morty people to do big budget stuff they're completely not prepared to do but Chloe Zhao is a legitimate director
>>
>>151643007
Yeah, and considering he and the others have been living among the humans for millennia, he should've known people would use it for war...

I also remember multiple outlets calling it one of the most diverse movies ever, despite it being one of the least diverse MCU movies to date.
>>
>>151650933
>Reminder the Academy Awards went out of it's way to not only nominate it for best picture
Pretty sure the move to best picture was after the blowback to the 'Popular movie' category.
And honestly, even without BP, they probably would have tried it. The Oscars have gotten very self conscious about how little the general audience cares about Oscar Nominee movies.
>>
>>151652671
But it has black people!
>>
>>151651680
> My biggest bitch with MCU stuff is that they just grab Rick and Morty people to do big budget stuff they're completely not prepared to do
They get TV guys because they can be more easily bent to studio wills. They don't want another Edgar Wright situation.
I think Chloe Zhao was actually attached to get them a 'real' Oscar nominee. I think Fiege at least mentioned 'maybe' trying to get an Oscar
>>
>>151652671
"Diverse" is lib-speak for "more black people".
>>
>>151642677
The whole fucking movie was stupid.
>"We didn't help during any of the world-ending events because we're not allowed to interfere with human development."
>immediately shows a flashback montage of them interfering with human development at literally every stage of history
>>
>>151652671
I forgot if they tried the “it’s the first ever superhero movie with a black character” shtick with this one.
>>
>>151653876
I know at least one outlet did, but I can't remember which one specifically, because I know that both Blade and Steel was brought up at the time.

The big reveal is that the Eternals are actually, to put it simply, pest control robots. Why do they need human bodies, personalities, and the abilities to fall in love and have sex in order to be pest control robots? Why do the Celestials lie to them about them being pest control robots? Just tell them "You are pest control robots designed to kill Deviants. Now... go out there and do that. Good luck!" Lying to them about their true selves serve no other purpose than pissing them off when they find out. Also the Celestials gave them the ability to get pissed off at the Celestials.

And why would the Celestials want the Eternals to stay out of the fight with Thanos? Celestials are born once a planet acquires enough life forms on it. Thanos' whole MO was to kill half of all planets' life forms. Thanos should've been the Celestials' and the Eternals' #1 target. He's an immediate threat to the Celestials' way of life.

X-men is explicitly jewish empowerment. The first movie starts with le hall-of-cost.

Eternals was not jewish empowerment.

Everybody mad.
>>

Screw that, heres the actual problem:
These are effectivly planet sized gods.
They refuse to perfom c-sections where instead the mother explodes at birth.
And the climax of the movie is literaly an abortion.

The scene is supposed to be this dramatic and emotional moment, but it just comes out as silly at best. I don't know how to explain it, it just feels childish and naive, for a lack of a better term, I guess.

Also, I hate this shit, 'hurr humans are stupid, we had to spoonfeed them every single thing', as if humans were a bunch of babies and these Eternals were these oh-so-kind benefactors.

Just a reminder that he was sad because human weapon technology had grown to the point that humans could potential kill themselves off, which would make the whole sacrifice thing impossible (or at least delay it by millions of years.) The whole thing was just weird and didn't fit with the tone of the film.
I did enjoy the WMAF sex scene though.

Literally everyone who has ever directed a Marvel film has prior feature directing credits. If anything you should be complaining about them hiring Chloe Zhao because her oeuvre is a bunch of milquetoast dramas about lonely people looking at landscapes.
