So when did they start developing the idea for 'Adult Swim'?The Sealab 2021 pilot was cooked up in 1999, Maiellaro and Willis started writing most of the 1999+ episodes of Space Ghost and there's concept art for ATHF from February 2000.
i mean space ghost was their first original show. they probably had the idea for more mature oriented shows airing during the late night hours from the very beginning, they probably just gave it a name once they had enough shows to justify its own block. even before adult swim existed in name they were showing more adult stuff in the late hours in the late 90s
I remember when the bumps still had old people swimming in pools.
SCIFI was already showing anime at night long before
>>151643511i remember when the plaintext bumpers were actually funny

>>151643374There's also Lazzo wanting the PPG movie to be for "middle aged dudes" and be edgier when it was in development in 2001

To a certain extent CN didn't want to be seen as a "kids channel" the way that Nickelodeon branded itself. Nick was all about "being a kid" and every show revolved around kids and the shared experience of kids. From the beginning CN was a channel that aimed to show animation for all age groups, and Adult Swim was their experiment to see if they could dedicate a portion of their day to things that weren't kid friendly and be successful. The project just didn't have a lot of money. So I guess what I'm saying is that "animation for adults" was a big part of their identity to begin with, especially with the more history focused stuff like Toonheads. Then something must have happened around 2004 that made them hard-pivot to being a kids channel with an adult block at night, because a more juvenile identity was adopted by then.
>>151645159>Then something must have happened around 2004 that made them hard-pivot to being a kids channel with an adult block at night, because a more juvenile identity was adopted by then. They must have accepted that what made adult swim popular were the cartoons with a near non-existent budget, so they leaned more towards Outsider artists and anyone who had an idea that could exist on 5 dollars and some bubblegum wrap. They knew what kind of a demographic was watching the show, stoners and kids who have school tomorrow
>>151643374Lol I dunno
>>151645147I made it up
>>151643494I think of this as a sort of Adult Swim prototype.https://youtube.com/watch?v=njsc8CtaVp8
>>151643374It was a simple calculation that late night CN was basically just dead air and wasted money as is. Most cartoon channels put worthless or unproductive shows in these death slows, but early CN was effectively just Hanna Barbera reruns. So why not make it adult oriented? The kids are asleep after 10pm anyway, you might as well cater to some stoner college kid looking for some entertainment.
>>151647385A very smart and inspired idea you gotta admit
>>151645159>Nick was all about "being a kid" and every show revolved around kids and the shared experience of kids. Not entirely. Before Adult Swim, Nick already had their Nick at Nite programming block meant to appeal to older audiences by running old sitcoms like I Love Lucy or I Dream of Jeannie. It wasn't the same type of M-rated material you'd eventually get with Adult Swim but it was still seeking a more adult, non-kid audience.
>>151648052That's fair, it was also a difference of intention.Nick at Night's primary goal was to entice the parents of kids to purchase packages with Nick via playing on their own nostalgia.Adult Swim of mainly content meant for as stated before random college age stoners..
>>151643522I remember them having good music too, it took me years to find out who j dilla was
>>151645159Nickelodeon has Nick at Nite though, a programming block for boomer nostalgia. It came on around 8pm too, so plenty of kids were up. I hated it as a kid and would change the channel.
Maybe as early as 1994. I've seen some Hannah Barbara design sheets for the old shows from the 60s and 70s with 1994. They were probably made for the oeginal content and bumpers being made on cartoon network. Theh all had a logo with space ghosts head and hanna Barbara under it, stamped on it.So they were at leasr thinking about reusing old properties for new content that far back since the date shows they were assembling new model sheets to be used. Now, im jusr guessing it was for adult swim. This sruff could have been for canceled pitches and pilots just as well
>>151645147It was Craig McCracken who got told that>Another PPG movie factoid. When we started the film I was encouraged by CN to make the movie for “25 year old guys.” So we upped the seriousness and action and down played the funny. By the time we finished there was a regime change at CN and the new heads of the Network were upset we didn’t make a poppy, colourful kids movie.https://crackmccraigen.tumblr.com/post/143305406189/ppg-movie-serious-vs-funny>>151647308Retard
One thing that has been forgotten since Adult Swim took over is that they were airing adult-focused late night content already, just not a set block There was of course Space Ghost as the most prominent. They also aired uncensored theatrical shorts, black and white shorts, anthology series, indie and foreign productions, and more mature anime. Largely stuff only adults and animation nerds would be into. That was the precursor content for them to get approval for a full block and budget to make shows as adults were watching, and to have it as one named block and not a bunch of random shows and mini block names They likely got approval in 1998/1999 to make Adult Swim, they probably thought of the idea since the mid 90s
>>151643516no one cares about them though

I heard they paid ten million for the syndication rights to Futurama, is that a little or a lot?
>>151660228I'm not sure...
>>151660228Where'd you hear that?
>>151643523>[adult swim[ Oooooh, so close!
>>151643374Someone in the industry who was there talked about it and it was essentially >>151650132I thought it was interesting Space Ghost Coast to Coast was basically THE precursor that led to the Adult Swim block and all it’s original shows being formed because it was just that successful. It was cheap to make too because all they had to do was use the Space Ghost assets already in their possession to make the show.
CN was always the edgy channel. Their original cartoons had more of a bite to them than the stuff you saw on Nick. Nevermind Toonami which had shit like DBZ and Gundam which were completely unheard of at the time.
