Why do we not talk about this show? Along with Disney duck comics and popeye, it might be the third most influential cartoon in japan.

The Marjo gang in Time Bokan was inspired by Dick Dastardly and Muttly and Marjo is just a murging or Penelope and Dick. The orginal concept art for Marjo is literally just Penelope Pitstop in black.

From Time Bokanz you can draw the line from Wacky Races to Wario/Wuige/evil Peach, Sonic the Hedgehog's Eggman, Pokémon team rocket and many more. Almost all of anime's bumbling villains have a common ancestor in Dastardly and Muttley.

And holy shit, Red Line is just Wacky Races with an insane budget.

And yet we rarely talk about it.

WB has gotten in its own way and not done any modern revivals that have a focus on fun rich visuals and exciting car action.

American animation doesn't know how to do that kind of dynamic action and WB doesn't want to outsource it to anyone who is international and talented because they're too cheap.... So nothing happens and Wacky Races languishes.

Its going to require an America animator who knows how to make non static visual action animation mixed with slapstick gags who is able to get some pilot shorts greenlit if WR ever has a chance at revival. ( For reference: look at Tom & Jerry Fast & Furry directed by Bill Copp, co creator of Eek the Cat and Savage Steve Holland's animation director on Better Off Dead/One Crazy Summer. You need someone talented like that with cache)

Maybe someone can sneak WR action into a WB IP slop cart racing crossover. Multiversus was such a forced idea when WR and even Space Jam were better formats for WB crossover games)

This is all true. Japan has produced how many Time Bokan's since the first? 13 something? And spent what, 30 million on an unofficial adult Wacky Race movie with Red Line?

And what did the US do in that time? Fender Bender 500, Port some JP games, and use muttley and dick, poorly, in that scooby movie.

Japan even made a pilot to get HB to let them make a new Wacky Races with Wacky Races: Japan Tour but nothing has come of it.

https://youtu.be/_4BOCYOx1Vk

I get that Hanna Barbara has mostly sucked at animating action and machines and pretty much wrote the book on making animation cheaply but they need to either A. Let japan take a shot at it or B. Just accept that they suck at action and put together a team to like do the cars with cell shading and computers.

The comedy isnt an issue. There are like 20 or more people that can do that old snappy back and forth villain dialog. Just get a good voice actor that enjoys playing villains and let them adlib.

How was the 2017 show?

Didnt they kill it with some of weird release window?

Feels like a good IP to keep introducing new one-off characters and see what sticks. Just rotate out some of the classic driver (sans favorites like Dick and Penelope of course) with some new ones for an episode.

They've tried that a couple times. Laugh Olympics essentially swaps everyone out and the sport.

Fender Bender 500 swaps everyone but dick and Muttley out and switches to exaggerated off road trucks.

Its a pretty good idea. They coukd swap in and out a lot of hanna Barbara characters and refresh a lot of ip.

Some things just have a longer shelf life. The fact that people still care about or talk about Popeye, a 90-year-old IP, is a miracle. There are franchises that are barely ten years old, and people hardly pay attention to them anymore. Wacky Races’ time in the public consciousness has simply passed.

Well, the problem with these kinds of things. Woody Woodpecker is popular in Brazil, and that’s fine, but what really matters is whether it’s popular in its home country. If it’s not, it risks being forgotten because no new content is being produced or talked about. Even if an IP is culturally important, that alone won’t save it from being memory-holed. Just look at Yellow Shirt Kid.
>>
>>151652078
Anon, japan can make its own shows. They just need HB to ease up on the rights
>>
>>151650682
Funny how Marjo's the first, but it's her immediate successor Doronjo who gets all the attention.
>>
>>151653293
Japan favoring Yatterman is kind of weird. Time bokan 1 had better good guy mechs. Mechabuton is just better than the dog thing from yatter.

I need to sit down and watch both front to back. Im sure there is something that just clicks with yatterman that isnt obvious from watching random episodes.
>>
>>151649721
Tatsunoko made a two-part Time Bokan OVA in the 90s. The first part was all the villain trios in a Wacky Races-styled competition and Marjo was almost the winner, but Doronjo pulled ahead at the last minute and won. The second part was Doronjo and her goons trying to steal Tatsunoko's famous seahorse logo, which goes about as well as expected when the Yatterman team shows up like usual.

There are animators in japan who wish they could make a high budget wacky races. For whatever reason, despite there being a couple racing animes, thst one is really special to them. A parody of the mean machine with a muttley alien even made it to yellow line in red line.

The Dick Dastardly and Time Bokan link is interesting just for the impact its had. Japan just keeps remixing the two to develop new villion trios and duos. Like team rocket is a little marjo gang, little dick and muttley.

I really would've liked to see what the rest of the Racers looked like in the "Wacky Races Forever" pilot. The music was pretty nice too.

>"No, Muttley, we CAN'T win the race fair and square. We are villains, ergo we HAVE to cheat."
Sums his attitude up perfectly.
>>
Nothing ever addresses why mumbly joins the rottens for laff Olympics. I know it was to get around rights issues but I need my Hanna Barbara lore to make sense.

As an aside, if we got more wacky races and started using random characters, we should get a Daisy Mayhem car. She can drive an old dodge Challenger or a lifted 80s f150
>>
>>151649721

> All of the animators and directors of note in japan that made all the best animated stuff during the 80s and 90s always site this as an inspiration or one their favorite western cartoons.

Personally i cant stand it.

Is this actually worth watching today if you've never seen it?
>>
>>151650682
I'm scrambling to find the interview from the head designer at Tatsunoko who said he reused the Doronjo gang formula all the time because HB got away with reusing their character designs and tropes so often that he felt it was pretty charming.
>>
I remember I used to do wacky races with my brother as a kid.
We'd build silly vehicles out of k'nex and put our other toys in them and roll them down the stairs and stuff to see what survived.
We would voice the toys being on teams and have rivalries and there was a goofy villain team, etc etc
Good memories.

>Is this actually worth watching today if you've never seen it?

can you tolerate the things that copied it? Can you watch a random episode of pokemon for team rocket? Wario? Robotnik being mean to sonic?

The writing isn't deep. The jokes are not secretly mature. You would see some time bokan for that.

Its pretty simple. Dick Dastardly is an evil cheat who usually fucks up, and his dickheaded dog laughs at him when that happens.

Even that Speed Racer spinoff they did looked like Wacky Races mixed with Samurai Jack.
