Taking The Lion King 2 specifically as it was presented, the lesson was that you can't assume everyone taken aside by Scar and even raised with his goals in mind can't just shake that off and return to the pride. For it to have the race mixing message people are going on about it they would have to have been tigers, qnd for it to be more like Romeo and Juliet it would have to have been a rival pride known to Simba's pride for at least a century who has their own way of doing things and are deeply different in their methods. As is it's about some very recent break-offs from the pride returning to it. The simple message is to be taken from Kovu's (was that his name?) point of view, and it's that you shouldn't believe everything you've been raised to think. How Simba treats Kovu is completely rational, and when he comes around it's rational. Kira (was that her name?) has nothing to teach children except the wrong lessons and just doesn't listen to daddy.
