>Read about how the Black Cauldron is Disney’s lost classic, a forgotten flawed masterpiece>Watch it>It sucksThe art direction was good, but everything else was ass.
>>151681801The issue was the movie tried to adapt two books from the Chronicles of Pyradin series instead of one.Should've adapted the Book of Three and then did a Black Cauldron movie instead of fusing both stories into one.
>>151681801Never seen it. Why was everything but the animation ass, and how could it have been done better?
Wasn't this the movie that Don Bluth finally had enough of Disney with and left to make The Secret of NIMH? If so, worth the disaster.
>The art direction was goodIt looks like a normal dark age film with a couple of extra tricks. I wouldn't call this good, but at least it feels like they somewhat tried to make a difference.
>>151681928How are those books anyway? Are they any decent?
>>151682025I thought he was already doing independent projects years before this film came out.>>151682134They're worth reading from what I remember.
It's a great movie to watch as a grandparent with young children. There's bickering between the main immature characters, the bard and wizard are wholesome grandpa-style characters. The bad guy gets his comeuppance and good defeats evil. that annoying retard faggot dog kills himself if you stop the movie right there, it's an animated classic.
>>151681801inverse polished turd. it was a lot better before it got meddled with.
>>151682134they're excellentto the point that when harry fucking potter came out i was like "THIS is getting movies? not Prydain? fuck this earth"
>>151681801It's bad but I wouldn't go so far as to say it's terrible. There is some really fucking cool shit like the horned king and the darker atmosphere is a really cool change of pace for Disney. But it is one boring fucking movie with very lack luster protagonists. Pacing is shit too and it'd still be bad without the Katzenburg edits. There are still worse Disney animated films made prior and after the Black Cauldron
>>151681801Hot take: this deserves a live-action remake more than any of Disney's classics. Better to try and improve on something that sucked to begin with than risk tarnishing the legacy of something good.
>>151682022It did the annoying marketable sidekick creature before that was everywhere
>>151681801Yeah...Majority of these reviewer types that bitch and moan about the lest gems really cannot grasp the fact that most of the time a movie performed really badly because it was a really shit movie that nobody liked. That's it. no super deep secret plans or hidden agendas, the movie sucked and audiences hated it.
>>151684423I can only see Gurgy as some little old man with a mustache. His design just looks like some annoying little old guy.
>>151681801The first 20 minutes are compelling then the pacing goes to hell, feels like a bunch of episodes from a tv series crammed into a movie
>>151681801It was not intended to be like that, but this movie was one of the first in the subvert common expectations type of storytelling, that mostly annoys people more than entertains. >Main character is a wimpy cowardly kid that can barely lift the sword>Princess is mean spirited and cynical >All the main characters are pretty useless in any kind of dangerous situation>The Pig is the most important character in the mythology of the movie>Plot sort of resolves itself without much effort from the hero teamPeople actually like epic heroic stories, but Hollywood keeps trying to make things down to Earth by having a group of normal suburban nobody types in big adventure stories, and they are just not that fun. Relatability to the audience only goes so far.
>>151681801Try Treasure Planet instead. .I dont know about masterpiece but I loved it
>>151681801The CEO in charge chopped 20 minutes out of it
>>151682134They're coolIn it the Horned King is just a general to the true big bad ArawnThe movie Cauldron feels like it's meant to be an oblique reference to and yet also a means to sidestep Arawn by mentioning a truly evil king having his spirit trapped inside. In the book it's capable of necromancy just because and the act of a person willingly casting themselves within actually does destroy itThere's fucktons more characters and locations that get exploredKind of midpoint between YA fantasy and LOTR but fantasy Wales
>>151684171>Hot take: this deserves a live-action remake more than any of Disney's classics. Why? The thing the movie has going for it is Eilonwy's design and you're never going to find a live action actress who's going to hit that right balance of being both cute and pretty. Especially not when they would inevitably cast some at best 5/10 black, hispanic or Indian in the role.
>>151682134The books are great.
>>151684515In the books Gurgy was this wild beast-man. Disney decided to shrink him down and make him cute and fuzzy. I can't really complain; it's a nice design even if it's off-model as hell.
>>151684171I would rather they do a live action adaption of the Book of Three and then do the Black Cauldron.>>151684676The 'subverted expectations' are one of the few things the movie got right about the books they were based on. Taran and Eilonway maturing from cowardice (though in the books he was a coward who desired glory and fame) and cynicism is a huge point of the book series.Pig is only relevant in the first book, though it's around for the entire series.
>>151688946>>151684515his voice and mannerisms make him far less endearing than his design conveys
>>151681801I have never watched this. I know it bombed, so I assume it must be good and will defend the notion very aggressively.
>>151689388I dunno; I thought he was cute, though I am probably easily entertained.
>>151689388The movie version of Gurgi is book accurate
