What are some common /co/ tropes you hate with a burning passion?
>>
>>151683846
cliche level subvert expectations.
>>
>>151683846
Nobody ever believing the MC or taking them seriously when something bad is happening or is about to
>>
>Something bad happens beyond the character's control/they didn't even do it
>Every time he tries to explain what happened the characters keep interrupting them angrily, even their closest friend in the entire series
>Bonus points for the "I didn't think-" "No, you didn't" exchange happening over something totally beyond their control
>Episode ends with the character being exonerated but without anyone really apologizing to them for being a fucking asshole and not letting them explain what happened
>>
>>151683846
I hate this retarded meme.
>>
>>151683846
Therapy-speak and its consequences on modern writing.
>>
>>151683846
>Mice hero
Is there any cartoon with mice as the villain? Jerry is an asshole not a villain
>>
>>151683933
The Redwall cartoon comes to mind.
>>
>>151683885
Especially when that character is known for the notably smartest character in the main cast
>>
>>151683846
>animals depicted negatively as the heroes
Besides mice/rats, which ones?
>>
>>151683846
brown quirky girl mc
>>
>>151683904
I used to hate this trope but this shit happened to me one too many times, and specially recently it completely nuked my life.

Opposite side though the lesson is pretty good: talking things out doesn't work and if you want someone to listen to you use violence.
>>
>>151683846
The girl character is a no nothing knowitall who makes everything about her and ruins the fun and pace of the show.
>>
does the fish not see himself as a talking animal? how would he even know about dogs, cats and mice if he lives under the sea?

>>151683904
This holy shit this.
>>
>>151684303
But nobody "talks things out" in those episodes anon. No actual conversation happens.
>>
>>151683904
>>Bonus points for the "I didn't think-" "No, you didn't" exchange happening over something totally beyond their control
This one really pisses me off, especially if it was something totally fucking random. Like they invite someone over and a fucking laser beam from space causes a house fire. No fucking shit they didn't think that would happen, the fuck are they getting blamed for?
>>
>>151683846
>What are some common /co/ tropes you hate with a burning passion?
basically anytime a "something happens that would change the status quo but it's not allowed to stick" plot happens, especially since in a lot of shows they just aren't very good at doing it

as you can imagine this makes watching most animated sitcoms a chore unless they're top tier hilarious(and even then it can be frustrating)
>>
Mindswap stories. The only time I liked one was where the plot was more messing around and how it left a character's brain isolated from a body so he could have flashbacks of his life.
>>
>>151683904
This was a plague in 80s through 00s animation, it's like almost every series was mandated to have an episode like this.
>>
>>151684230
Snakes, wolves, foxes
>>
>>151684368
That's the point anon, you can ignore an argument but you can't ignore a fist.
>>
>>151684811
I'd like more heroic snakes genuinely though, you've got enough wolf and fox characters as is though.
>>
Shit that isn't a dog acting like a dog makes me unreasonably butthurt for some reason
It's just so aggravatingly lazy. Complete unwillingness to come up with fresh/realistic monster/alien/feral caveman child behavior
>>
>>151684368
I said that....
>>
Anytime clowns show up I hate it. Not because I have any irrational fear or hatred of clowns but because whatever the context is the clown just always feels uninspired and forced.
>>
>>151683904
>>151684303
This. It’s an infuriating trope, but it happens way too often with failed adults and fake “friends out of convenience”. Some people are just constantly stressed out or lack a moral compass, so if you happen to give them attention they’ll abuse it. More often now, they refuse to acknowledge explanations or consider misinterpretations because they have crafted a bubble of world views that can never be threatened or they lash out. These cartoon creators didn’t have the modern internet to deal with, but if they had people like this in their lives I understand why it finds its way into a show. Shit sucks man.

Also, sorry to hear anon. Unless you actually fucked up and aren’t being honest with us, I hope you have at least some people that still know you’re a real person and talk with you.
>>
>>151686701
This. In the Good Dinosaur, having a human child act like a dog was so jarring
>>
>episode revolving around the boring side character nobody likes
>episodes where the annoying character teams up with the protagonist and the annoying character ends up saving the day
>>

This, FUCKING THIS

i'm guessing these eps are an easy way to garner loads of audience sympathy and discussion for why the wronged chr was done dirty. we've all been in that situation, it really boils blood, all discussion & publicity is good.
so make an aggravating ep where a chr is stuck in a shitty victim-blaming situation where shit piles up, instant classic that gets a lot of attention.

also maybe it promotes learned helplessness, idk.
>>
>>151690035
If bodies have the original vocal chords, it shouldn't be that much different.
>>
>>151690106
I agree that public women's restrooms are Nurgle's Domain but how many times has this actually happened?
>>

I especially love when, in any fantasy world where the main characters have seen all kinds of crazy shit, monsters, aliens, dragons, goblins, werewolves, robots, giant bees, talking lions, scarecrows, tin woodsmen, ANYTHING, someone sees, say, a ghost, tells their friends, and they reply something like, "What? Ghosts don't exist, are you high?"

As someone whose job it is to clean the employee and public bathrooms at work at the end of the day I do not understand how this trope came to be. The homeless and drug addicts that use the public restrooms here are cleaner than the women that work here. I have no idea how women think that kind of shit is okay to do in a shared bathroom.
>>
I don’t think in tropes and instead let the execution do the talking.
>>
>>151690035
>>151694313
>especially cause it would be even more interesting to hear the voice actors trying to interpretate each others characters

the only example of this I've seen:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rEtg5Qt3CLs

seems natural that their accents would swap, but not the vocal cords

>"If you kill me, you'll be just as bad as me."
>"Actually, I've managed to keep my morals and sanity clean throughout the entire story, so that's just objectively wrong."
If you're going to write a story about how revenge is bad, remember to fucking actually make the revenge bad or don't even start!
>>
>>151683904
The cutting off people from talking pushes my buttons.
I suffer through this since childhood and am getting closer to crashing out because of it
So I pretend I'm mute if I can get away with it
>>
>>151683904
>Well you should have said something earlier!
>>
>>151694657
I've found out that screaming "let me finish a fucking sentence" either forces them to listen or disturbs them so bad that don't even wanna argue anymore
>>
>It's a boys versus Girls episode
>The boys suddenly all become Macho assholes
>lose to the girls
>"Fine, I guess girls don't suck" or something along those lines

it's a relic of the past, but doesn't make it any less shit.
>>
>>151683904
Any plot that could be resolved in 10 seconds if the people involved communicated effectively, but instead gets dragged out to 11+ minutes, is just lazy writing to kill time
By the way, raising your voice and going “HEY FUCKFACE” to stop someone mid-scolding is a form of effective communication in some cases
>>
But you should be thankful for these tropes, they make your beloved show last longer!
>>
>>151694478
Boring
>>
>>151694464
>I do not understand how this trope came to be
I think it's because it's a forbidden place for the intended audience. Sort of like how a show will have an executive dining-room or whatever and it's opulent and bigger than the building. Having it be an exaggeratedly different place instead of just the same as the one you know lends itself to a more interesting story, at least in theory.
>>
>>151694464
It's because it's kind of a real thing in grade school which is the age group these shows are targeting. As soon as girls hit puberty it stops being true and starts being what you're describing.
>>
>>151694490
It's subtle, but I liked it in JLU.

I think you're conflating two different things. Girls can have crushes, daydream, fall in love, date, whatever. There's nothing inherently wrong with that. Nobody watches Totally Spies and thinks "I'd like this, but the girls keep falling for a guy of the week, so I hate it".
The problem is taking a character and rewriting her like that, which is less about girls falling for a bunch of guys as it is the writers just trashing what was established. If they had Clover in a committed relationship that lasted all of the first season, then dumped the guy in the second and had her act like she currently does, that'd piss people off. But it'd be the same if they had her suddenly realize she's gay and swear off guys forever.
>>
>>151694976
Not that I'm not thankful, but why DID that fall out of fashion? Felt like it was really common in the 00's and such.
>>
>>151698905
Because its le heckin sexist and misogynistic even though the girls technically win in the end.
>>
>>151698905
Probably a result of writers who grew up on those episodes understanding why they're shit.
>>
>>151683904
Like >>151684303 said, it happens in real life a lot. It would be nice if those characters get their comeuppance but there are versions where we are expected to side with the asshole for reason.

>>151684507
I only hate it when the clearly bad status quo is being morally justified like with Family Guy.

>>151683846
Yin and yang is depicted as good and evil.
>>
>>151683933
Sing, maybe.
>>
>Villain HAS to have a humiliation ritual before getting defeated
You beat him up and put him in his place, no need to make him wet himself (figuratively) too.
>>
>>151699479
No, this one is specifically to stop kids from thinking the villain is cool, there's way too much idiots that justify villains just cause they look cool
>>
>Strong surging emotions to protect your friends and family super charge MC enough to basically defeat everyone single-handedly or get out of an impossible situation

Thiiiiiiiis. I hate it every time I see it. The power in something like that only works when it isn't super. When the character can basically just supercharge from throwing a temper tantrum it just feels unearned. A character beating the shit out of someone in a fit of rage means something when it's a standard human doing it, it's more impressive, but when it's multiplied by superpowers, then it just turns into
>Why didn't you do that before?
>Eh, didn't feel it I guess. Sorry.
And that's aside from it being corny as fuck shonenfaggotry.
>>
>>151683846
>Supporting character becomes rich/famous/smart
>Ditches their old friends at the drop of a hat
Only goes to show how little that guy's friendship means to the rest of the cast. At least them being apart due to outside forces interfering makes better sense

>>
>>151694341
I liked that moment in Justice League with Flash and GL that turns this around somewhat.
>The gorilla *talked* to you?
>Yeah, right after I stopped his car.
>I'm supposed to believe this?
>Hey, we've both got a Martian's phone number on our speed dial. I think I deserve the benefit of the doubt here.
>>
>>151684507
>basically anytime a "something happens that would change the status quo but it's not allowed to stick" plot happens
"Poor character becomes rich for an episode but loses it all by the end" and "Rich character becomes poor for an episode but gets it back by the end" are the most immediate examples of this I can think of.
>>
>>151699686

>>151700804
One thing I gotta give Doug is that they actually stuck with Roger becoming rich. You think it's gonna be some story about how it makes him even worse and he's gonna lose it all to learn some lesson about humility, but no, Roger just keeps being Roger whether he's rich or poor and the plot gods don't force him to go back to living in a trailer.
>>
>powerless sidekick character gets powers
>he starts acting like a dick
>gets rendered powerless again and learns a lesson about not letting it go to his head
>never gets powers again for the rest of the series, rendering the lesson moot
>>
>>151694628
The worst thing about this trope is that it forces a false binary. People end up acting like the only options are letting the guy off scot-free or murdering him right then and there. It gets annoyingly cynical.

I would love to see an episode where this happens to a character and they snap, slap the taste out of the interrupter's mouth and scream LISTEN TO ME OR I'LL BLOW YOUR HEAD OFF while holding a gun to their head. Or even better, simply stop talking, walk away and let the asshole deal with the consequences:

I don't want to be "put him in jail for the 100th time" Batman.
The situation isn't safe, villain's capture isn't 100% secured. Villain still possibly got followers nearby or a trick up their sleeve.
Also, it isn't "scot-free" to beat them within an inch of their life and having murdered everyone you saw in their stronghold while "confiscating" all the wealth. Odds are they can't just do-over this again.
>>
Related to "you can't kill the villain for any reason" but worse imo
>heroes massacre oceans of villain's grunts without a thought but once they actually reach the fucker him/herself they hem and haw that it would be just impossible to finish them off
Looking at you Jack Darby. You had fucking Megatron dead to rights and you pussed out because hurrr Optimus wouldn't do that

That's the kind of cynicism I'm talking about. It's just taken as fact that justice doesn't work, that there's a trick and he'll just bounce back to exactly where he is right now unless you blow his brains out yourself. That, in any situation where the hero wants to murder the villain, he has to or he's a self-righteous moron. He has to be a murderer, and nobody should have a problem with that.
